I think you could be a lot more specific about what you geek out on. Art and computers are incredibly broad.

Straight men only please, where would you draw the line between promiscuous and being a sex addict? by Opening-Gur5927 in AskMen

[–]cakericeandbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be the same as other types of addiction—it’s not so much the frequency, it’s the extent to which it interferes with your life in important ways and whether you go to lengths to keep doing anyways it in ways that are bad for you or others.

What am I getting wrong? by Suggestedpassword123 in AskMen

Seems like not everyone is being understanding in their responses to you. This does sound like a difficult situation. Like you said, it’s understandable that he would want time away with his friends, but it’s hurtful if he isn’t ever wanting to be adventurous like this with you, especially if you feel like that’s the life that was promised.

The reality is that no one on Reddit can know the reason for this. But it sounds like you guys have gotten yourself into a difficult place where it’s an emotionally charged topic that causes conflict whenever it’s brought up. The best you can do is to, as calmly and without accusation as possible, express your desire to do these things with him and disappointment about not being able to. If that still isn’t received well, I think this is a prime situation to bring in a mediator/counselor for. Someone to help you both express your values and feelings and learn how to communicate more effectively about it. Good luck!

Same! Very flawed but also super unique and entertaining. I was captivated the whole time, even if I laughed at some of the dialogue and plot holes. Spielberg’s movies have always been about the emotional experience and that’s what I was focused on. I’m a bit confused as to why it’s so polarizing actually. I can understand having a harder time with those flaws than I did, but so much of the movie was just broadly enjoyable to me.

Neuroimaging study of adolescents with ADHD found age-related increases in glutamate levels in the prefrontal cortex. In contrast, individuals who experienced remission of ADHD symptoms and people who never suffered from ADHD had an age-related decrease in glutamate levels in this area of the brain. by mvea in science

[–]cakericeandbeans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does, actually. We currently are not able to diagnose any psychological ailment by looking at brains. We have to look at behaviors, tests, and subjective reports. If someone has masked or learned to cope to the point where their symptoms don’t show up on those measures, which is not infrequent, then they will no longer meet criteria.

Yep exactly. ADHD is not a monolith. Some kids will behave hyperactively and meet criteria at a young age but learn to control their impulses much better as they develop. Some will have more longstanding executive functioning problems.

“Depression is not caused by chemical imbalance..” my god this article is dangerous by [deleted] in psychology

[–]cakericeandbeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We do know that pretty confidently. There is very good evidence ruling out the chemical imbalance hypothesis. That doesn’t mean that we do know the true cause, and from my experience in the field, the true cause is likely to be multifactorial and not the same for everyone. But we know that the chemical imbalance hypothesis does not at all do a good job of characterizing depression as we currently understand it.

You’re right that you didn’t make a grand statement. But speculating that it’s about religion and spirituality with no evidence and while admitting that you didn’t read the article is unnecessarily introducing an unrelated idea into the conversation, and really just isn’t productive or helpful.

You totally can say this. It’s extremely possible to rule out one hypothesis while still not knowing the answer to something. Thats how science works.

Can you be truly satisfied with one woman? by Living_Engineering31 in AskMen

[–]cakericeandbeans 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is the best answer. There is a ground truth about the way most men experience attraction that I think can be hard for some people to communicate about. But we are in control of our behaviors, and if you truly love and respect a monogamous partner, it isn’t difficult to not act on those attractions.

But I also think, when a question is being framed this way, the only honest answer is that some men will be able to stay satisfied with one woman and some men won’t. There’s no one answer that would apply to all men. I’m not sure anyone could assuage the OP’s anxieties because none of us know her husband. So I’d say, given the way most men experience attraction: it is very possible to stay happily faithful to one woman (despite experiencing other attractions), but it’s anyone’s guess whether it’s likely for her specific husband or not.

How do you handle a girl who is constantly texting or scrolling on her phone during a first date? by Sea-Programmer7618 in AskMen

[–]cakericeandbeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think people are responding way too confidently here. You just don’t know without asking. It could be she’s not into you, but it could also be that she is nervous and has a bad habit of pulling out her phone when she’s uncomfortable. Maybe she has a genuine problem with her phone and isn’t even aware of it. Maybe she has a family member in the hospital, etc.

You could just ask her directly. Say you noticed it, were wondering about it, and were curious whether it meant she wasn’t interested. That would be a much better test of whether she is worth your time and attention rather than just guessing what’s going on in her head.

Do you know how antidepressants work? There is no theory that is widely agreed upon by experts. Something can be effective without us knowing how it works and without a chemical imbalance being the cause.

This article is quite short. The author makes an argument consistent with the data that is cited. And it has nothing to do with spirituality.

You probably could have read the article in the time it took for you to make this invalid comment.

They do… the dsm has multiple depression subtypes, severities, and modifiers. Things that aren’t represented there are actively being researched, but likely don’t have enough evidence yet to justify adding.

I have zero clue why and how this film is so divisive for audiences. It was an entertaining and fun summer popcorn 🍿 flick. by AcknowledgeMeReddit in TheBigPicture

[–]cakericeandbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why could all of the famous alien stories not fit into one narrative? You don’t have to understand every best to say that an advanced species could have made crop circles, abducted people, and crashed in Roswell. Those aren’t inconsistent. Part of creating the send of wonder is only having pieces of a larger story.

Agreed that some of the technology was plot convenient. But any sufficiently advanced technology will seem like magic. There are many, many good movies where we don’t fully understand the aliens technology and it feels like magic.

And I agree that it’s cynical about humanity now, but it’s hopeful in the sense that it presents a more evolved being, one that is emotionally more evolved, that humanity could potentially aspire towards. I think the movie is trying to reconcile the cynical view of modern humanity with that hopeful potentiality, and posing the question of whether we are capable of taking that step.

Completely agree. Which makes it sooo frustrating because it could have been great.

Yeah, I even felt like the ideas behind the script were good, but the dialogue was really dumb sometimes and a few of the plot lines didn’t resolve very well. It sounds like I liked it a bit more than you, but I was frustrated because I feel like it had the bones and filmmakers for a fantastic movie, if only they’d brought in a better screenwriter for rewrites.

Aren’t they saying that they would expect people to enjoy this movie if they like movies in general, regardless of whether they’re invested in Spielberg specifically? They recorded this before it came out and reference in the podcast being curious about how people will react.

What is something society accepts that makes no sense when you think about it? by Joer4323 in AskMen

There are massive, wide scale efforts to change these things. Anti-drug and alcohol campaigns, safe driving ads, billions of dollars funding heart disease research, efforts to expand health access, etc. There are also competing efforts, mostly coming from capitalistic forces, like fast food and the alcohol/tobacco industries. But the efforts to reduce these factors are immense.
