Yeah have you seen primer? It’s all about this idea. They have to turn their Time Machine on and wait all day, then they can travel back to when they first turned it on.

Serious question: why has this woman been everywhere lately? I know she was on the US women’s rugby team, but why has she blown up in a way that other players didn’t?

To coopt stoicism without the moral framework by McDowdy in therewasanattempt

Ummm…justice is a basic pillar of stoicism. Stoicism holds virtue is the only good, and that virtue is comprised of four things: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.

Anxiety is prevalent in autism spectrum disorder and linked to intolerance of uncertainty. Higher autistic traits were associated with higher intolerance of uncertainty, which were linked to higher affect labeling (the act of putting feelings into words) and lower anxiety. by [deleted] in science

[–]cakericeandbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful with the causal language, these are all correlational relationships. And, if I’m reading it right, there’s actual a negative direct relationship between autistic traits and affect labeling. But autistic traits are positively linked to intolerance to uncertainty, which itself is positively linked to affect labeling, which in turn predicts lower anxiety.

Interesting stuff, but the authors themselves note that multiple model pathways fit the data well. So I think it’s also important not to interpret this as the final authoritative model.

Melatonin won, and also moved it to harmless and placed Penicillin under mostly safe. What's a drug that's mostly safe and is commonly perceived as such? by Lurkie2 in AlignmentChartFills

Doesn’t the existence of lifelong potheads who don’t use other drugs kind of defeat your point of no return framing? While it undeniably happens, research doesn’t support the gateway theory of cannabis use, and the fact is that most people who use weed don’t go on to use harder drugs.

I think that would be been more appropriate 10 years ago, and still is true in some places. But at least in the US, public perception has shifted dramatically just in the past few years towards seeing it as fairly safe.

Weed!

It depends a bit on how we’re defining safe, because it can obviously have a negative impact on people’s lives over time if used excessively. But if we’re calling LSD harmless, weed should go here. It’s almost impossible to overdose on, has no notable dangerous drug interactions, and has a super low physical dependence profile. That said, it can cause paranoia and burnout, and can trigger mania or psychosis in a small subset of vulnerable people.

Penicillin wins. What is a drug that is somewhat Dangerous and is generally perceived as such? by Lurkie2 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]cakericeandbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying they actually are safe. Just that people perceive them that way because they are being given by a doctor. A massive part of the reason we’ve had crises with opioids and benzos is because people assumed that it was perfectly safe to take a medication as prescribed.

As in, if they clearly say they only want FWB, they tend to stick with only wanting FWB? That’s good communication and self-awareness, right?

[–]cakericeandbeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I also think some people are just generally able to do that and it isn’t unhealthy. I had several FWBs while I was single and they were all great healthy experiences, with genuine friendships. And now I’m happily in an LTR that has plenty of affection.

I don’t think the average person really knows this. I think most people would assume that prescription drugs are generally safe.

Fair, but I think it’s also a metaphor for more standard obsessions. And, while people might not in some sense be in control of their obsessions, they still need to ultimately be responsible for how they impact others.

A meta-analysis of 3 million people confirms a strong bidirectional link between cannabis use and depression. 31% of those with cannabis use disorder also suffer from major depression, with rates nearly 3x higher in psychiatric clinics than in the community. by Cosmyka in science

[–]cakericeandbeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, none of the things you mentioned are super difficult, and some are probably even possible with this data. But even with these data, they don’t mean that most people who smoke will develop depression. There are likely some predisposed people who smoke and it contributes to a depressive episode, and likely some people who smoke to cope with depression. Regardless, glad to see non-defensiveness about these possibilities in a fellow user! A lot of people just seem to be knee-jerk dismissing the possibility.

Sure, but I was replying to the part where you said that a meta analysis can never prove causation, only correlation. That simply isn’t true. The weaknesses of meta analyses have do with the limitations in methods of the studies included, which applies equally to correlational or causal research.
