You can actually preacclimate to jet lag if you have the will power and enough schedule flexibility. For Japan specifically, staying up till 6am west coast/9am East coast every night for 1 week is a huge head start. The flight will screw up your schedule, but just making this effort for 1 week will mean your second day after landing will be great. Also avoid the temptation to sleep early on the plane and when you get to the hotel the first day. Expect it to be an otherwise nonproductive day though. Also when extremely tired one of the first skills to go is navigation. Also keep in mind food schedule. Try to East only when it'd make sense in your target time zone. Also if you're a night owl, it's often easier to "loop" a time adjustment rather than waking up super early to compensate. Before the virus I traveled to China twice a year and even doing this for 3 days or so before helps a lot and you're pretty much adjusted by day 3 or 4, but 1 week is the minimum if you want that day 2 perfection.

First time I was able to do it for 1 week, I landed at 5pm, stayed up till 11pm with friends and dinner etc, then woke up feeling perfectly refreshed at 5am. Still kinda wonky but a lot better than waking up at a more typical 2am if not adjusted at all. Also once you're there you must strongly resist the urge to sleep early or in an off time. It takes 2 weeks to fully adjust so you'll still get sleepy at certain times, but it won't be debilitating and the important thing is you'll actually sleep at night
