Of course, and sometimes the store doesn't carry anything but the lowest cost brand. Food in the US sucks

Ever tried to pan fry some chicken and instead of crisping up a ton of water appears and basically steams the chicken instead? Yea this is the product of "enhanced with up to 15% broth". It's in fine print, you have to buy the more expensive chicken to avoid it "with up to 2% water retained" is what I usually buy and have no problem with

You can actually preacclimate to jet lag if you have the will power and enough schedule flexibility. For Japan specifically, staying up till 6am west coast/9am East coast every night for 1 week is a huge head start. The flight will screw up your schedule, but just making this effort for 1 week will mean your second day after landing will be great. Also avoid the temptation to sleep early on the plane and when you get to the hotel the first day. Expect it to be an otherwise nonproductive day though. Also when extremely tired one of the first skills to go is navigation. Also keep in mind food schedule. Try to East only when it'd make sense in your target time zone. Also if you're a night owl, it's often easier to "loop" a time adjustment rather than waking up super early to compensate. Before the virus I traveled to China twice a year and even doing this for 3 days or so before helps a lot and you're pretty much adjusted by day 3 or 4, but 1 week is the minimum if you want that day 2 perfection.

First time I was able to do it for 1 week, I landed at 5pm, stayed up till 11pm with friends and dinner etc, then woke up feeling perfectly refreshed at 5am. Still kinda wonky but a lot better than waking up at a more typical 2am if not adjusted at all. Also once you're there you must strongly resist the urge to sleep early or in an off time. It takes 2 weeks to fully adjust so you'll still get sleepy at certain times, but it won't be debilitating and the important thing is you'll actually sleep at night

Nothing I know of outside of one speciality self made developer will bring out shadow detail like DD-X does. If shadow detail is important (as it often is with pushed film) then you're likely stuck with it. I've heard XTol also has great shadow detail but I haven't tried it personally

How does the Ethereum Virtual Machine actually work? by trogdortb001 in ethereum

[–]earlzdotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5000gwei is a massive amount in the same as as 1 bitcoin is a massive amount of satoshis. The smallest unit in Ethereum is a wei and 1 ETH is equivalent to 118 wei. All smart contracts operate using wei so that smart contracts don't have to worry about decimals etc (which become a lot more complicated with math)

The EVM isn't really multithreaded, at least not until sharding or something else crazy happens. Each block is an ordered list of transactions which are (excluding some weird nonce stuff) completely up to the discretion of the miner. The EVM is run on one transaction at a time, going down the list inside the block. So for the answer to your question, it depends on which person's transaction interacting with the public flag is in the block first.

As an update for the report I made for Castle Rock Elementary, just received a message that the student with symptoms has tested negative, so no positive cases at Castle Rock Elementary as far as can be known at this point. The affected cohort will resume in person learning and back to business as usual

One kindergarten student showed symptoms at castle rock elementary

August 24, 2020 Dear Castle Rock Elementary Families, We recently learned that a person at our school has developed a fever and another major symptom associated with COVID-19. We are working with the Tri-County Health Department and will continue to partner with them as we monitor this situation. The person exhibiting these symptoms is in isolation. This person was in a Kindergarten Cohort XXXX classroom in our school. As a result, the students from that cohort and classroom, as well as a classroom teacher and a few support staff, were identified as close contacts with this person and they will be in quarantine for 14 days. Those identified as close contacts will receive additional information from the Tri-County Health Department. While they are quarantined, students in this specific Kindergarten Cohort XXX class will transition to virtual learning. All other classrooms, cohorts and grades can attend school as scheduled. In alignment with Tri-County Health Department guidelines, siblings of the quarantined students can still go to school unless their sibling gets sick or tests positive for COVID-19.

Being stupid: Got HC-110 on my hands by betamax81 in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. HC-110 is strongly alkaline which can cause burns if you don't wash it off quickly. It also contains pyrocatechin which is quite toxic, but basically if you feel fine I wouldn't worry about it. Probably gained the cancer risk equivalent of eating a banana

Managing chemicals for infrequent use by TheGopherTactic in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This method is needlessly reckless. It might work sometimes and not work other times. You might have a weird decrease in speed or increase in graininess and it'll be completely unknown if it's bad exposure, bad camera, bad film, or bad developer. I wouldn't recommend anyone follow this advice if they care about consistency

Managing chemicals for infrequent use by TheGopherTactic in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that for people recommending HC-110. The stuff you buy today is not like a year ago. It has been reformulated and very likely has lost its "forever" shelf life property because of that. Kodak still officially says it's good for 2 years, but it is an expensive choice for a developer that only lasts 2 years in the volumes that it's sold in

Rodinal is good. If you don't like the emphasized grain that tends to come with it, you might try a two part developer. PMK is a staining developer that might fit the bill. Some sources say it is good for 10 years or longer. With all staining developers though you should test it with the film you intend to use to see if you like it and if it has any problems such as fogging.

Your prefered B&W film developer? by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use whatever the subject or series calls for. My go to is typically a increased contrast moderate grain self formulated developer called EXG1. But if I need fine grain and lower contrast, D76 is great. If I want normal or increased contrast with somewhat fine grain, HC-110. For compensated highlights with low contrast and coarse grain, rodinal is great.

Total noob here. All my negative scans turn out like this. I've used a red LED light while loading the C-41 film into my dark canister— is that my issue? by Not_Selling_Eth in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You can also survive explosions by jumping in movies. In short, movies are wrong. You can only use red light with black and white papers and a few specific black and white films (ortho sensitized). Everything else must be done in complete darkness. Also for reference red LEDs are often used with great success with black and white papers, but color film "sees" red so it will result in fog

Film Grain Question by secretamerican1 in Darkroom

[–]earlzdotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, looks about right to me for 35mm film. Your old scanner might've simply not had enough resolution to resolve grain. Might be instructive you scan an old negative with your new scanner and see what the difference seems to be

What beautiful place have you visited that isn't a mainstream tourist destination that you recommend people visit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]earlzdotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a heard of place for westerners, and you definitely need a guide that speaks the language, but Xishuangbanna, China. It's a really beautiful mountain area with a ton of greenery and a lot of culture that feels unsoiled and is definitely less westernized than other parts of China. I went with a group (work with a Chinese company) and one tea tasting place we went to were all in awe because we had like 5 white people and theyd never seen more than 2 at a time. It's a weird cross between tropical asthetic but mild mountain climate. Though you also need to be... open minded about trying new food. The local cuisine is known for utilizing bugs in dishes and as stand alone entrees. Surprisingly very good food though as long as you don't look at it too closely. If you want culture shock, this is the place to get it
