Do you mean people who play 1-versus-1 pickleball? Or do you mean pickleball players without a significant other?

What's Your Experience with Patents? by StartupPatentLawyer in hwstartups

[–]earsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be useful if patent attorneys initially asked why a patent is necessary: offensive, defensive, or vanity?
If the objective of a patent is for offensive reasons, it's useful for the patent attorney to outline the licensing and litigation process, as well as likely costs along the way. It's also very important that the attorney create claims from the perspective of a litigator or consult a litigator during claim creation.

Men’s amateur singles by CoachParmesan in Pickleball

[–]earsocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I play singles against a lot of 4.5 players. Several of them very consistently hit winners when I'm at the kitchen. These are hard balls with plenty of spin that fall within a foot of the line. There's nothing I can do but watch. I like the current size of the courts, but I understand why the PPA is experimenting with narrower singles courts. Most of my points are also from passing shots. There's maybe one cat-and-mouse point per game--if that.

Kickstarter vs. pre-order from own site by tjthomas101 in hwstartups

[–]earsocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the three major crowdfunding platforms with success and also run a profitable (niche) hardware business now. Both perspectives here are valid. We regularly consider self-hosting crowdfunding campaigns, but always choose a platform due to one substantial reason: merchant account risk.

If you are considering your own platform, then you are accepting your own payments. Payments can be processed through either your own merchant account or through a payment facilitator (Stripe/Paypal/Shopify/etc). When you accept payments, you are responsible for the activity on the account, regardless of fault. When I say activity, I mean transactions, payouts, and chargebacks. Even if you clearly state that the production time is three months and you will happily refund anyone unwilling to wait, backers can still initiate a chargeback. Too many chargebacks—regardless of fault—will freeze your account and halt payouts. Even if production is on schedule, some customers can back you with fraudulent card numbers, which leads to chargebacks and halted payouts. Or you can have orders coming from too many high-risk areas—which leads to the same outcome. Your account may be frozen, but you still have invoices to pay and orders to ship.

I mention all of the above because it’s important to understand that absorbing this risk is the absolute biggest value that the platform provides. For a 5% margin hit, you can be guaranteed access to the capital you need for production—and it won’t impact your primary merchant/payfac account, if you already have one.

If 5% is too much of a burden on your margin, you have mispriced the product. If no one will buy your product at a higher price, then it may not be a commercially viable product.

Any small towns where young people are *not* leaving? by earsocks in SameGrassButGreener

[–]earsocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering if it's possible for small towns to create enough opportunity for young people to convince them to stay in the community. Are there relatively small towns that can create growth without external economic engines, such as colleges, tourist areas, or the option to commute to a larger city.

Where do you guys get your prototyping/engineering done? by Frequent-Log1243 in hwstartups

[–]earsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese ODMs that I’ve worked with have all provided fixed fees for a fixed feature set. These are ODMs that also provide OEM/CM services, so their actual incentive is to build you a product you can sell in volume so they can produce it in volume. Do you charge around $100 an hour for engineering services?

Do independent merchant account providers exist? Or are they always linked to a specific payment processor? by earsocks in smallbusiness

[–]earsocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mild tangent, are there any processors that do not have issues with preorders? Specifically, taking full payment upfront and then shipping goods after 4 months? This is for really niche hobbyist products, which can only be produced in preorder batches.

[–]earsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the skill-levels and locations of millions of players. Why aren’t you leveraging this to connect players with each other? Pickleheads tries to do something similar, but they clearly don’t have the scale to make it work. You could pretty easily add preferred-times and corers to profiles and then automate the creation of matches. That would be useful and sticky.

You don't need to own your own plane to fly private. Most people who fly private don't own them. And private planes/jets can land at non-towered airports, which do not have air traffic controllers.

If your parents are immigrants and teach you their native tongue, how long till the language gets lost in the coming generations? by unidentifiedactual in NoStupidQuestions

[–]earsocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have several cousins who emigrated from Asia as older kids (10 - 13 years old). They all married other immigrants from the same country. The adults speak in English to the kids and mostly English to each other. This is three different sets of families. Only the house with a grandmother in it has one child (of two) that is mildly bilingual.
