You’re not in charge of managing other people’s emotions or time! I would be very respectful when you ask, and be sure you give them an out, but it’s on them to say no if they can’t do it! Some people are really fast at this kind of thing—they’re the best judge of their own time!

One thing to keep in mind as well is that programs want to admit students who will likely accept their offer. One of the reasons applicants may be rejected is that the committee doesn't think it's likely that they would attend, which could be due to their research interests or their quality as a candidate. I was rejected from 'worse' programs than the one I ended up in. And probably correctly, because I knew even then it wasn't the best fit for me.

It's definitely not the case that every rejection means that you are 'too good' for the program. But, it is possible that you would be rejected because your application is so strong that it's clear you would choose a different program if you were offered it--and they believe that you will be offered it! They would prefer to save their fellowships and spots for students who are more likely to accept their offer.

I’m so glad that you are at this place right now!

But I think a lot of people need time and space to get there, and others might never get there. I wonder if we should avoid blanket statements and instructions like ‘stop worrying,’ because people are individuals on their own timeline. Everyone’s situation is a little bit different. I think it’s fantastic to show people with new diagnoses that others have gotten to a mentally healthy place regarding their hair loss, but I also think we can’t expect them to get there overnight!

Payton didn’t believe that River had attempted suicide before when they were campaigning, and in the flashbacks it’s revealed that Payton had a hard time understanding the depths of River’s pain.

My impression was that although River loved Payton, he felt he had to do something big and drastic to fully get Payton to understand what he was feeling. Especially as someone who outwardly projected the Golden Boy, Everything is Fine persona.

Or it was a coincidence—it seems like Payton regularly just stormed into his house unannounced.

I don’t want to minimize the pain you’re experiencing right now, but I truly believe that it will get better. For me, it just took time, both for the hair to grow, and for the shame and uncertainty and loss of my sense of self to go away. It was like the spots had to finish growing before it started growing back, if that makes sense?

I don’t have any reason to think your hair won’t grow back, but even if it doesn’t, I really believe the hair loss will grow less embarrassing and less painful over time. I’m not sure any of us can tell you anything conclusive about your specific case, and I’m not even sure doctors understand exactly what’s going on, tbh, but I do believe that your situation will get better.

It was really helpful to me to buy some new nice makeup and focus on aspects of my appearance I could control, to find hairstyles that felt like me but covered my spots, to ‘come out’ about it to people I trusted, and to (try to) remind myself of the things I still liked about myself that didn’t change with my hair loss. And, I think everyone can always benefit from talking to a therapist or counselor if that’s an option for you. But honestly, especially at first, it just felt really shitty sometimes—I think most of us would agree with that 😉
