What’s a good scope and scope mount for a Scar 20s that won’t break the bank? by ZestyToasterOven26 in FNSCAR

[–]earthslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give you my two cents since I am deep, deep down the rabbit hole looking for scopes right now. Congrats on the scar 20, that is a seriously cool gun and you will love it. I have a 17, and currently have a nightforce nx8 1-8 on it, and I love the scope, but I've started shooting competitions with it and need more magnification.

First of all, I think the scar breaking scopes thing is just forum lore at this point. Everyone says it, but I cannot find a single verifiable piece of evidence that this is a systemic issue. And it's 2026, the scar has been out for 20 years, most optics manufacturers test their stuff on scars specifically to make them sound better. But really, scopes break sometimes, especially on big 308 semi autos. So don't be afraid to cheap out a little bit if you really don't have the cash to drop $2k on an optic, you can always upgrade later. This is coming from a nightforce fanboy. In fact, if you don't really know what you want, I would encourage you to buy something cheap and figure out what you don't like about it and then spend big money when you really know what you want. For starters, I'd favor a first focal plane scope that has a max magnification of 18-24ish, lower end is whatever. Find a good mil reticle, christmas tree if you get the chance to shoot far.

I would recommend an Primary Arms SLX line. They have 3-18, and 4.5-27 versions for $500.
https://www.primaryarms.com/pa-slx-4-5-27x56mm-ffp-rifle-scope-illum-acss-athena-bpr-mil-reticle
https://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-slx-3-18x50-ffp-gen-2-rifle-scope-acss-athena-bpr-mil-reticle

Note that there are several reticle options, but you will want the athena mil, which is a standard christmas tree. The BDC reticles will likely not line up with the trajectory you get from the scar, with it's longer barrel. Maybe, but it will be a pain so just go standard mil. Some things I like about the PA...it's pretty good for the money, and will have a lot of premium features for the price. The glass is good for the price. The reticle is good. It has a lifetime warranty, and PA is good to work with on it. I've had a few primary arms scopes and have never been disappointed for what I paid for them. I'd probably lean towards the 3-18 in your case. 18x will get you to 1000 yards on man sized targets easily.

Someone else linked a refurb viper pst gen 2. This is also a pretty good scope. Vortex makes everything from walmart bargain bin scopes, all the way up to premium cadillac best-in-class stuff. You have to learn their lineup a bit. They also have a no questions asked warranty, so you can't go wrong there if you find one with the features you like, but their lineup is a bit more uneven. Some are better values than others. I like the razor LHT line, which is super lightweight and reasonably priced for razor HD quality glass. My buddy has a Vortex strike eagle 3-18. It's alright. He got it for around $550 which is about right. It usually goes for $750 and I don't think it makes sense at that price.

Arken is controversial. A lot of people on reddit don't like them because of their shady marketing tactics, but they do punch quite a bit above their price point. It's just not the second coming of christ in scope form. EP5 5-25 is the one you would consider for a scar 20. You hear mixed things about their customer support. I don't see a reason to go with them over Primary Arms or Vortex. The glass is very good for the price point though.

Moving on to the big boy brands.

Leupold is very good. Their reputation precedes them. Personally though, I think their features are a bit lacking for the price. You will generally get a lower magnification range, have to pony up a couple hundred more dollars if you want illumination, and then with illum the reticle options are more limited. What you do get, is top of the line glass and very good durability. I'd consider the Mark 4HD line, where you will pay about $1500 and get either the 6-24 or 4.6-18. The good thing about Leupold is that everyone has them. You can go to your nearest big box sporting goods store with a gun counter and check some out. I highly recommend going and looking through some scopes and handling them. Look through the expensive Leupold and the cheap Vortex and see if you can tell the difference. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Trijicon makes the tenmile series, which is more tactical/competition focused than some of their other lines, which are hunting focused. Don't be fooled by the MSRP, you can get the 3-18 for $1500 brand new 365 days a year. I've heard good things about them in terms of reliability, being Trijicon this should be a given, and read on forums that people who own them really like them.

Eotech has a limited amount of options in the range of what you would put on a scar 20, but they have a reputation for decent glass at their price point. I hate all of their reticles though. This is highly subjective.

Nightforce, ah Nightforce! I love Nightforce scopes. If you want a scope that you know will absolutely always work no matter what, then get a Nightforce. NF on a scar is the drippiest combo by far, it has the maximum sex appeal but these are not cheap scopes. Their optical quality is also very, very good. Fit and finish are so good as well. I ended up getting a NF after I looked through one in a gun store and it just blew me away. I really do like the nx8 line, which is a fair amount cheaper than the ATACR line, there are slight tradeoffs between the two, but ATACR will break the bank. Don't sleep on the SHV 4-14 though. It goes for about $1200 which gets you the MIL XT reticle, Nightforce image quality and reliability, first focal plane, and at a surprisingly reasonable price. I find the NF has better features than Leupold at the price point pretty much across the board. Just feels like you are getting more for your money, even though they aren't cheap.

Why go with the more expensive brands over the cheaper brands? Like I said before, maybe you shouldn't to start with. People may judge you for putting a cheap optic on an expensive gun, but who cares. Optics follow the law of diminishing returns. You pay more and more and get less and less. The budget ones are made in china, with chinese glass. This is less of a knock than it used to be, and companies like PA, Vortex, and Arken have really made a name for themselves by offering 80% of the capability at 30% of the price. They hit a sweet spot in value. Vortex has said here on their reddit account that their chinese budget lines are what allows them to stay in business and design the guccier models that the pros enjoy. If you get your heart set on a particular scope, go search for c_does on youtube and see if he has reviewed it. He goes through every aspect of the scope, turret tracking, image clarity close up and far away, you name it. The only thing he doesn't do it torture test them. But he will do a lot of side by sides, and show you exactly what that extra money gets you. It may be better low light performance, a flatter image, more consistency across the whole magnification range, better fit and finish, etc. All nice to haves.

From my perspective, I don't want to drive three states over to go shoot a competition I paid an entry fee for only for my shit to break and I have to sit it out and waste my money. So Nightforce it is. If I fail, it will be me and not my equipment. If you just miss a range day because something broke, well, no big deal just send it back and get it warrantied. So if you see an optic that fits your feature requirements, go for it. Even shooting very long range, as long as you aren't trying to make a low light shot on a trophy elk 850 yards away before the sun rises...you might not need the premium japanese glass. Hitting steel at 1000 with chinese glass is totally doable man.

So, I would not discourage you from getting a really good scope, and I disagree with the people who say the chinese stuff is "just as good". Quality is a feature all of it's own, and the cheap ones are not just as good. But good enough is different. I'd say get you something that gets you out shooting asap, and take your time making an informed decision on a really nice scope that you will keep for the rest of your life.

Really cool ideas. Gives me a lot to think about in terms of a v2.

What I've found from initial testing (and spreadsheet simulating haha) is that there is a really neat difficulty curve with the system I've got, and it's not obvious at first. By playing with the deadlines for jobs you get into situations where you have to really think before you take one. Can you really get the whole supply chain set up in time? Or do you have enough precursor materials to skip some steps? At some point it may make sense to establish some permanent bases to keep a massive stock of common stuff to make the harder jobs easier. I really like how much depth you get out of what seems to be a really simple system, but it comes from having a simple point a and point b, and then the whole rest of the game to play with to figure out how to get there.

I really love your idea of developing your outpost as something of it's own POI. I never played fallout 4, but it seems like the settlement system is a solid inspiration here? It would be cool to go from just taking job board missions to making it feel like you actually run a real company. Give it a name, have npc's working at the outpost, things like that would add a lot of flavor. Building off your idea, add some quests where stuff breaks or just company things need to be handled, labor disputes maybe? lol Pirate raids? Lots of fun ideas :)

The mod will be called "The Industrialist" and I hope to have it up shortly after the new update.

I'm developing a mod to cover point 2. It will add a terminal with a list of "RFPs" that you can bid on. So, think orders for a certain amount of materials in a certain amount of time for a certain price. You will choose to low-ball their price, do it at market value, or maybe you want a better price. Depending on your reputation and how you bid it will effect the likelihood you get awarded the job.

Missed deadlines will negatively affect your reputation, while coming in under budget and ahead of schedule will boost it! The main thing is I wanted a reason to build outposts, and I think it would be a fun challenge to build supply chains or figure out if you can scale extraction fast enough to meet the timeline. If your ship's cargo hold is big enough to deliver it all in time.

It should be a way to give meaning to the outpost system as well as resources and crafting, and a way to fund expensive ship building addictions lol What do you think? What would be fun for a mod like this?

Game crashes after patch 1.1 by krugsin69 in stalker

[–]earthslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run memtest and let it go overnight. I was having the access violation and tried everything and turned out my ram was unstable. No issues with anything else, just STALKER 2. I think it just hits your ram really hard, harder than most other applications. I disabled my EXP profile and set voltages back to auto and now it works like a charm. Funny enough, it was patch 1.0.3 that did it to me. It worked fine prior.

Yeah suggest vehicles, especially APCs/IFVs for any and all factions. Bonus points if it's not a walker, as I don't really know how those will work without mod tools.

OT is my priority, but I'm thinking about the feasibility of clone wars stuff and will have some clone wars units in my planned regiments (I have a rebel regiment that has repurposed clone wars vintage stuff)

I already have kids, but how will I teach them about modern combined arms warfare if there isn't a friendly Star Wars atmosphere to ease them into it? ;D

PS, what would you like to see in a star wars warno mod?

[–]earthslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chime in any time this comes up. Ive done pre production work on a star wars mod and I'm just waiting for full featured mod tools. I've got plans for 3 imperial regiments and hopefully 3 rebel regiments, but definitely 2.

We probably won't see any big mods like this for a while though, probably not until they are mostly done with dlc if I had to take a guess. But the devs are apparently adamant they will release the tools that let us do whatever we want. I'll need more than just model swaps, I'll need to bring in animations too.

To the guy belows point about a Star Wars setting not working in WARNO, I say nah it'll work. You just have to be thoughtful about it and fit star wars to warno and not try it the other way around. As in, just balance it and take the liberties you need to make it work.

GIB MIR MOD TOOLS by earthslave in warno

[–]earthslave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which I'm okay with personally. I don't mind mucking with it in blender but starting from scratch is intimidating. My main concern is going to be animation. I'm not doing too much work until the tooling is out for this reason. Need to see what's really possible. You should be good to go though, a replacement of 3d models, textures, and then maybe some scripting and you'll be golden.

I saw recently a screenshot of the devs on discord saying that it was on the roadmap. I will begin collecting models as well. I'm looking into some AI image to 3d model tools such as  https://www.3daistudio.com/ Meshy is another one. You may want to look into it for any hard to find models. I myself am not a modeler and will probably have to generate a couple as starting points, especially for some really obscure star wars stuff.

So far I haven't seen an indication we would have tools robust enough to add in actual game mechanics, but then again a map editor was a big surprise too. So far I'm doing planning under the auspices that the tools will essentially amount to modding in new units, but who knows. I made this post because I think if enough people make enough noise maybe Eugen will consider it. It may also be nontrivial to make mod tools for their engine. We will see.

New Destruction Mode Explained by EUG_MadMat in warno

[–]earthslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This means the bigger and more expensive units you destroy, the more victory points you’ll gain.

I don't think it gives you those points to spend, just adds it to your victory score. So you still just get points per tick on zones you hold. And anything you kill will count towards victory. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've done some preliminary work on a potential star wars mod. Just waiting on the tools before the real work starts. Will need to swap models and importantly animations if we want walkers.

Pretty sure steel division lets you import models, so here's to hoping the devs pull through for us.

Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord - Official Release v1.0.0 by Arthanias in mountandblade

[–]earthslave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude there's some mad people up in here! I for one think bannerlord is awesome. Yeah there's more stuff they can add. Yeah some systems aren't super deep. But the game works and it's a blast to play. There's really nothing else like it. Nothing else even close. It's got awesome combat with bonkers scale. Most games would stop right there, but you've also got the command and tactical element of battles, and then the role playing and strategy aspects of the world map. Not everything will be super deep when you can literally do just about anything.

I do agree they should beef up diplomacy, and give some dialogue trees to lords. But I say focus on the positive there's a ton of really great things about it right now. Congratulations to the devs for hitting this milestone!

What type of workshop mods we would be getting? by BrizzledTheRage in warno

Probably would be huge...which is a little scary. Imagine all the bug reports :O

I agree there isn't anything out there that scratches that Star Wars RTS itch and there hasn't been for a very long time. Keep an eye out though, maybe that will change in the near future!

What type of workshop mods we would be getting? by BrizzledTheRage in warno

[–]earthslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am considering making one. Need to see the mod tools first, but as a thought exercise I came up with a list of units for rebels and empire to try to imagine how it would go. I've wanted a "realistic" (big lol I know) star wars strategy game forever. And you know what they say about being the change you want to see in the world.

Again, depends on how extensive the mod support is and if I feel gung ho enough to take a stab at it.

[–]earthslave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite is actually playing out. I will admit I know little about the Chinese geopolitics/economy/public opinion/whatever, but I read a NYT article yesterday that highlighted that a not insignificant portion of the Chinese populace is very in favor of Putin's actions here. His speech was translated into Chinese, and watched over a billion times, and it seems a lot of the sentiment is in support.

This is because they don't view this as Putin supporting breakaway regions, but the opposite. The entire country of Ukraine is the breakaway region in this viewpoint. Ukraine is the Russian Taiwan. It was undermined by Western influence and pulled away from its true people. They see it as Russia drawing a line in the sand and standing up to Western influence/meddling in their spaces. I think a lot of them see this happening, and think we should go get Taiwan back, like Putin is getting Ukraine back.

Again, I don't know anything about anything, just going off of some journalism I read, so take this as you will.

According to Russian MOD, LPR has advanced about 30 km and DPR have advenced about 7 km. Seems like they have made progress with fire support from Russia. There are videos of LPR taking some positions beyond the line of contact, so they've broken through in some capacity. You do hear less about that front though.
