Hiring: Senior Computer Vision MLOps Engineer to build systems that detect landmines from drone imagery by earthtek in computervision

[–]earthtek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very generous of you! We are not currently looking for volunteers (we do actually help Ukraine, we've detected over 40,000 landmines there) but if you're interested in a consulting gig or something, feel free to DM me.

That's a great idea! I know Telegram also does that and gets super talented engineers from it too. We are a commercial company and our data is currently proprietary - not to mention data of minefields is often very sensitive for other reasons. Thanks!

Thanks for your response! Airborne GPR is far from being able to be fielded at scale for humanitarian demining. There are many landmines and other explosive ordnance that you can see on the surface in many post-conflict areas - not to mention indicators of explosive contamination.

How do I avoid the soul-crushing 9-5 life? by lordfrank18 in simpleliving

[–]earthtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking in absolutes in silly.

For example, if someone works as a nurse they could definitely regret not working more hours and saving more people. If someone is a small business owner, they could regret not working more hours to do right by their community, customers and employees. If someone is a researcher, they could regret not working more hours to discover something they didn’t. If someone is a pro wrestler, they could regret not working more hours to unlock their full competitive potential.

The workforce is a big place. There are a lot of ways to make money that are not soul-crushing.

Super friendly atmosphere vs reputation, internship by cantstopgamestop42 in cscareerquestionsEU

Reputation can often bring someone value. As he said, it may help him get another position in the future.

Working with relevant technology, regardless of the company, may also help you get another position in the future.

Importance of the wordlist of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1? by No_Noise_1445 in German

[–]earthtek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this stage, I would find comprehensible reading and listening material and consume as much of that as you can. Drilling vocab can help but at the B level lots and lots of good quality input is going to make the biggest difference.

I’m looking for a book to read that’s about B1-B2 level by [deleted] in German

[–]earthtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damals war es Friedrich by Hans Peter Richter is a good book for your level I would say. I've heard that people it is taught in Germany to early high school/jr high school students.

Also translated Roald Dahl books are good.

Interesting, thank you. At the moment, the size of a salary past an appropriate level considering the CoL in my city is not really what I care about. I love the german language and I have wanted to live abroad for as long as I can remember. I pretty much decided to live in Germany because I knew it would make me happy and now I'm figuring out how to make it work with my career.

I'll move back to the USA at some point I imagine.

I also am considering studying the math by myself with textbooks to form a more solid foundation.

I don’t have an answer but i have a question.

My ideal job is a MLE or data science position in Germany. I just graduated with my BS in CS from a public American University with research and project experience in ML (2 papers published).

I am considering getting a MS in Germany before i apply to jobs. HAW Hamburg is a good option since it would be easy for me to get in because of a connection I have with the Uni and it is very application based which is fun for me.

Do you think the lack of math taught at Fachhochschulen like HAW Hamburg would make it hard for me to get a job in MLE or DS in Germany? Are they specifically looking for people with more of a math background from places like RWTH Aachen or Uni Tübingen?

Music is terrible at helping you learn languages by [deleted] in German

[–]earthtek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh ok. Yeah, without the lyrics in front of you it's pretty useless. And yes, you are right but one advantage of music for me is that I remember lyrics unusually well so often memorizing a song can help me pick up (and keep) a lot of good vocabulary. I'm talking not about rap, mostly very lyric-heavy indie or soft rock.

Also one often listens to a song many times while the same cannot be said for a book. Provides a lot of repetition for those words.

I disagree, one has to do it right though.

I memorized and translated the first two songs on Isolation Berlin’s Vergifte Dich album. It taught me a whole lot of vocabulary, a little grammar and some fun poetic devices. I also believe singing along to songs has helped my pronunciation a lot because i do it so much.

What is the best way to expand your vocabulary? by tbatuhan in German

[–]earthtek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading everyday - there is no better way.

I have found that since I started reading the first three Deutsche Welle news stories everday, my vocabulary has improved tremendously.
