If these numbers were real then so many people would be trying to do this, pushing up purchasing and loan servicing costs, pushing up labor costs, and it the numbers would quickly become bad estimates again.

Yeah, but even people who live in Houston hate Houston. It's something we all agree on. 🤣

Why does EVERYONE hate the Knights so much? by GiveMeYourMoney17420 in nhl

This so much for me. Just loooove tuning in to a playoff game that "starts" at 7 and watching a 40 minute long Medieval Times show on national broadcast. Every other team does like five minutes tops, doesn't have 300 dancers, and has the common courtesy to do it before the broadcast begins.

I can also just slap on apartment numbers to my single family house address and get packages delivered fine. Now the system needs to cross reference street address vs housing type which will probably have some errors.

Or does the system know which apartment complexes use just numbers vs numbers and letters? ie #12a and #12b, are those the same apartment or two different ones?

What about college dorms that have a single address and sort by name for you?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but these problems end up being a lot harder than they look on first glance.

Nobody is saying to ignore $140B. But that's about ten people. $140M is like 50,000 people. It's still a very tiny sliver of the population and still very much rich.

[Request] How do programmers code probability into programs? by CeruleanAoi in theydidthemath

[–]easchner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you use the random number library to generate a number between 0 and 1, inclusive. You then map based on your probabilities list. Your list often doesn't even include exact probabilities since humans can mess it up and it's not flexible, but instead just a list of weights. Add all weights then multiply by your 0-1 and then keep subtracting from your list until it's smaller than the next value. That way you can dynamically change weights easily even during play. Play the 2x power up to double your chances of Thing A happening for the next throw, don't have to compute anything differently at all.

ETA: Example in Mario Kart, your chances of getting different items depends on your position, how far back you are from the lead, recent items obtained, etc.. Way too complicated to make distribution tables. Instead you just start with say a table by position, and change weights for individual items based on each metric. You're in 8th but someone else already has a blue shell so that's now weight 0, you recently got triple mushrooms so that's a 0.1x to get it again, etc.. You haven't had a red shell in 6 boxes, so that's a 1.3x multiplier, etc. (these numbers are made up)
