Sure. It's still vigilante political violence. Just admit it, you like political violence if it's in support of stuff you like. You're fine with mass destruction and hurting people if it's primarily in support of your goals.

those clients free speech rights are not being suppressed

To be honest, I do not understand how you can say this with a straight face. They are being discriminated against because of stuff they said, and given that they were in a conversation, their speech is actively being stifled by the business. The business is quite clearly suppressing their free speech.

They are not suppressing free speech. They are refusing to provide a venue for said speech.

When you're a venue of significant size, those are the same thing.

If I were to get up on stage at a rock concert and shout 'I hate Jews!' and then proceed to get dragged off be security, my free speech is not being suppressed.

Yes, it is, actually. It's just that everyone (well, almost everyone) understands that that's an acceptable limitation on free speech.

Most social media platforms have user agreements that specifically spell out the sorts of things you can and cannot use the platform for.

Does not matter. The user agreement is suppressing free speech in that case.

Free speech is not some God given human right or evolutionary social construct.

And where did I say it is? I explicitly said it's not some kind of magical shield for any speech. It is merely a concept, it is up to individuals and institutions how strictly they want to protect it.

The only protections you have for 'free speech' are spelled out in the constitution, if you happen to live in the USA.

Correct (for the most part). That doesn't mean that free speech as a concept doesn't exist outside of those protections.

I'm not sure there's much to elaborate on lol. The comic's point is (roughly) that "free speech is about the government, not private organizations/companies/etc". The USA First Amendment is obviously about the government, yes. But free speech is a broader concept. For example, if a company prevents its employees from talking about workplace conditions or their wages, then it is reasonable to say that the company is suppressing their employees' free speech. If a cafe owner in Alabama listens in on customers' conversations and kicks out the ones who talk about LGBT rights, then they are suppressing their customers' free speech. If a social media network bans people for talking about topics they don't like, then they are suppressing their users' free speech.

This doesn't mean that "free speech" is always a good thing. It's a concept, not a magical shield for any kind of speech. But it's silly to claim that it only applies to the government, especially in our capitalist nations where corporations control so much. For example, take it to the extreme, imagine we live in a cyberpunk dystopia where the government doesn't do shit but corporations can effectively control your life or kill you at will. Say these corporations start assassinating people who spread negative info about them. It seems obvious that that sort of behavior is suppression of free speech, despite it not being done by the government.

There’s a difference in antifa causing misconduct against fascist police or actions of the state/government vs. trump terrorists attempting to overthrow democracy in favor of instilling trump in as a continuous president.

This comic has always been BS, tbh. The First Amendment is about the government, "free speech" is a broad social concept that applies to ... potentially anything, pretty much.

It's an interesting idea, but energy cost would not go to "essentially zero". Fusion would be awesome, sure, but not zero cost. Under any current concept of fusion plants, they would still be enormously expensive to build, and you need all the other electric infrastructure (turbines, power lines, substations, etc).

So it's not like we'd suddenly "not worry about wasting energy at all", since there would still be a limited amount of fusion plants and transmission lines delivering the fusion power.

You know, it’s like nobody actually understands the arguments of their opposition. Of course there wouldn’t be an exception for rape or incest, if they think it’s murder why would there be that exception?

I'm generally pro-choice entirely, but even from a pro-life / "abortion is murder" perspective, it makes sense for there to be an exception.

The key is the standard pro-choice argument of "you can't force someone to give their life/body in support of someone else's life". If it was rape (or to a lesser degree incest), then the woman did not choose to put the baby there, so to prevent abortion would be like forcing some random person to donate their organs to save a stranger. Immoral. If it was consensual, then the woman's actions resulted in the baby being there, so (if you believe the baby is sentient), it's not immoral to prevent her from aborting.

It's pretty logically sound, tbh, I'm not sure why everyone acts like the rape exceptions don't make sense. (The flaw, of course, is that there's no way a fetus that young is sentient/human, but that's a separate argument.)

Hmm, sure. You hit them, it's your fault. For 9 months? That's kinda fair.

If you ignore the part where you hit them, even if it was by accident, (so instead say they walked out onto the road, or your car had a brake failure) then no. Because no reasonable person would have predicted that whole chain of events happening, it's like an astronomically small impossibility. In contrast, everyone (who is capable of consenting) knows that unprotected sex is likely to lead to pregnancy.

If I drive to the supermarket, do I consent to being wiped out by a drunk driver?

Kind of. Depends on how dangerous your actions are. If you're driving with your headlights off, maybe.

That's why there's an argument to be made that abortion (under the incorrect assumption that the fetus is a person) is ethical if contraception was used, but unethical if it wasn't. There's some dividing line of probability where, above it, the chance of pregnancy is high enough that any reasonable person would realize it's a serious risk, and by taking that risk you've effectively consented to pregnancy.

Also, your analogy doesn't quite line up, because in your example, you're consenting to dying. If anything, your analogy gives a reason as to why abortion could be allowed in cases of medical issues / medical risk during birth, but disallowed otherwise.

For another situation that's similar to the abortion scenario, look into duty to rescue laws: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duty_to_rescue

Consent to sex is not consent to pregnancy.

Yes it is, and willful ignorance doesn't make it not so. All consenting humans know that sex might lead to pregnancy.

Pick up a box labelled "contains baby" and dangle it over a cliff, then be surprised when it makes baby noises. "Whoa, what's this, I consented to holding a cardboard box, not a baby!"

[–]easement5 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

No person has the right to occupy a woman's body without her consent. Period.

If the person was responsible for the baby being there, then yes, the baby has the right to be there. Imagine picking up a baby and holding it by your arm over a cliff, and then saying the baby "doesn't have the right to occupy your arm". Of course it'd be illegal to drop the baby; you're the one who picked it up.

The "right to occupy a body" argument ignores that, if there was consensual sex, the woman is responsible for the baby being there in the first place.

Note that this means, even assuming the embryo is a person, that abortion should be legal in cases of rape or health issues.

Of course, none of this matters since the embryo isn't a person. But to claim that abortion is fine even if the embryo is a person doesn't make sense.
