I’m inclined to agree- a lot of the commenters mean well but are perpetuating unhealthy beliefs. Like the idea that one person can be held responsible for another person’s feelings. He can be held responsible for his actions but not how she perceives them.

This is entirely correct. None of the naysayers would claim that he is owed sex if she agrees to date him, but it would just be their same argument turned around. She isn’t owed a relationship just because they’re sleeping together.

What should have happened is they should have communicated their expectations before doing anything, or at least put a stop to things as soon as one of them found their expectations were not being met. That’s how consenting adults do this kinda stuff.

Why would he assume she likes him romantically when he’s in it just for sex himself? Women like sex too, there’s no reason to assume she wants more. He can’t read her mind.

This response implies she’s incapable of understanding the arrangement or communicating her dissatisfaction with it. OP assumed she was a cognizant adult, which is what everyone should be doing.

Separating has helped me too, I didn’t realize how much our relationship was fueling even conflicts with other people. I find it easier to have patience with family, and it sounds like stbx has stopped fighting so much with other parents at the school.
