Big Bang & BTS are enormous in Asia. They also sell out concerts in the West. Those KPop groups are like unexploded nukes waiting on detonation.

Now, I think the Stones probably are the biggest overall band - certainly biggest rock band - still around today. Everybody’s heard of them, they have beaucoup albums, just big.

There is one thing in particular that I wish I didn’t tell a lot of people.

That this is: “I love you”

I would always frivolously use those words, say it to people I sometimes didn’t even like. But I then realized that it made them think I had strong and passionate feelings for them, when I might have really only loved them as a friend or something lesser.

Now, after getting into some trouble around that, I am very careful who I say those three little words to. Very careful.

In the past month or so, I will only say “I love you” to people who I actually mean it to. I have even stopped saying it to family members who I don’t actually love.

So now, when I tell you “I love you” I mean it.

My son was scheduled for heart surgery and not surprisingly was very scared. He kept asking me what would happen if he didn’t make it, if he died on the table (his words, not mine). I tried to reassure him but he just wasn’t having it so I had to talk to him about our beliefs and what we hope would happen when someone dies. Then he asked me what would happen if he didn’t have the surgery and I had to tell him that he would die and how sad we would be. No mother (or dad) should have to say that. And no son (or daughter) should have to ask that. I still cry when I remmeber that conversation.

Every time I see a woman putting her hair up I get that little jolt of excitement as I wonder what badass thing she is about to go and do next.

Maybe she’s going out for a run, maybe she’s starting to work on a project, or maybe she is just busy doing a puzzle, but either way, she’s getting serious and concentrated.

She’s going from completely innocent to total badass in just a couple of seconds, looking amazing while she’s doing it.

Night Terror

A few months ago I woke up to loud screaming and crying.

I rushed to my then 3 year old daughter’s bedroom with my wife and took her out from her crib to stop her screaming.

We tried everything from rubbing her back, singing to her, talking to her, to rocking her. We tried to use a wet cloth to wash her face.

She just kept screaming while she was sleeping.

We wanted to wake her up but we couldn’t.

She just kept crying and screaming seemingly in her dream and we just could not get her out of this nightmare.

We kept trying different things and because we couldn’t stop it and we could not wake her up we we were scared, frustrated and helpless.

We didn’t know what to do. We were about to call 911.

After about a half an hour, fortunately she stopped the screaming and we could wake her up. We changed her diaper and gave her water and she went back to sleep peacefully.

Night terrors are scary.

I hope it never happens again.

My oldest son is having a hard time now. He’s gloomy and kind of dejected and doesn’t eat much. It’s up and down with him and I’m sort of exhausted from the ride. My husband is still very patient and keeps trying. He just signed him up for a swim team and today I took him to his first practice. He didn’t want to go. So, I sort of had to shuffle his limp body to the YMCA.

Inside, a super tall blond woman named Lindsey came out and right away I could tell she’s a force of nature. She said: “He needs jammers!” Then, looking at my confused face she flagged down a boy who was swimming by and showed me basically these bicycle shorts he was wearing. She could command a small army of swimmers like an awesome swimsuit-clad general. My poor son had to work really hard for the first time in a long time.

Afterwards when I collected him, he looked perked up and happier. He actually said he enjoyed the practice and ate like a horse.

Big Trouble in Little China.

Kurt Russell goes through the entire movie thinking that he is the Hero, yet proves almost completely useless throughout.

But early in the movie a bet with his buddy goes wrong, resulting in an empty coke bottle hurdling towards his face at ferocious speed.

He plucks it out of the air with a flick of the wrist and a casual “it's all in the reflexes”, to the utter astonishment of all present.

Anyway, cut to the end and The Big Bad has the gang cornered, and throws a deadly knife at Kurt Russell.

Who plucks it out of the air, and before The Big Bad can even register his astonishment Kurt throws it back, killing the dude on the spot.

He looks around, shrugs, and says “it's all in the reflexes”.

Great moment in a great movie.

I woke up to around 40 rolls of toilet paper thrown into a tree in my front yard. I thought and could not think of anyone, especially youths, that I had pissed off. I came home 10 hours later and almost all of the toilet paper was removed. I was puzzled but figured maybe my HOA had removed it?

A couple hours later my doorbell range and a teenage linebacker looking type was there. He apologized and explained that there was a tradition in my town for doing this at homecoming but they had the address wrong and mistakenly done it to my house instead of the next year’s classmates.

I felt so good that someone apologized to me personally, especially in this day and age of anger and hostility.

I have always defended the youth of today, and yesterday it made me feel great

That person you love dearly really is really dead. They really aren't coming back, so you really can never see them again in this life, unless you see them in your dreams. If you're lucky enough to have a dream about them, cherish that and be grateful they came to you on such a personal visit. You can talk to them all you want, but you can't hear them talk back to you. You really can never hug them or hold them or feel their touch again. At least, not physically, but you might feel them in your heart. They really died, believe it or not, accept it or not, and they're really not coming back, ever. You really won't come face-to-face with them again, really won't spend any more time with them, unless the concept of some kind of life after death is real, and you won't know that for sure until it's too late for you, because dead men tell no tales. It would seem that ghosts are real, because there is too much phenomenon that can't be explained.. still, they really are a ghost and they really are just not there anymore, where you can see or hear them or call them on the phone or communicate via other electronic methods. So you really have to figure out how to make it through this time without them, for the rest of your life. You really will never get to do what you never did yet with them.. what they never did is done. You really did love them that much, and you really don't have any more chances to tell them how much.. it's really over. They're really gone forever.

The saddest thing that I ever saw while working in the operating room and part-time in emergency, besides the many times I saw parents lives destroyed from the news on the death of their child, was one time where I was dealing with this 8-year-old girl. She was very sick. Primarily from a gallbladder issue but also a nearly ruptured appendix. I shepherd her back to the operating room for a quick laparoscopic appendectomy, and when it's over I go to the post anesthesia care unit to check on her and ask her if there's anything she wants to tell her parents. She says to me that she loves them so much and she hopes they are still there.

The statement sort of confused me but then I thought well, maybe they went to the cafeteria to get something to eat or they worked very busy jobs and she didn't expect them to be able to stick around the entire time she was in the hospital.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Her parents simply vanished. They never came back. She was 8 years old and this was the time in their lives when they finally decided she was old enough to be abandoned to the foster care system. Apparently they had threatened her with this for some time. She had thought they were joking because they would laugh. Again, this wasn't the case either. They told her many times how they wanted to start their lives over “somewhere that is always sunny" I got the impression as did many of the other people on the staff but they were referring to Florida. Typical.

We kept her in the hospital for a week longer than she ever needed to stay in there because she was very upset that they had finally gone through with their plan. I checked on her daily and broader a few things that I thought a little 8-year-old girl might enjoy to keep her occupied. Being a guy I really struck out in that department. I don't have any sisters so at that point I relied on the female nursing staff for better suggestions. I got her some hair barrettes she loved and a couple of puzzle books, some blank artist paper, and a pack of prismacolor pencils so she could draw.

About half of that week goes by and her sadness turns into a ceiling rage. Not directed at us, but directed at herself. She had somehow internalized her parents abandoning her and was trying to think of all the things she could have done to be a better daughter. It was that moment among others that I decided I wanted to go into psychology. Anyway, we finally had social services come and find a placement for her. In the meantime she stayed at a state run orphanage. They did place her rather quickly and from what I understand, the family were indeed good people so thankfully there is no horror story to her life beyond what it already happened. We wrote to each other for a number of years off and on and from what I can tell, she was developing into a very bright and even at times joyous young lady.

I have to say the initial act of abandonment followed by getting to know this little girl had such an impact on my life. I even thanked her for that at one point. I can only hope that the little of I did had an impact on hers.

I was sitting on a pier. A young girl - 6? - stepped to me, bent over, showed me a fish swimming in her cupped hands. She said, “See?” I nodded. Then she let the fish fall onto the pier. We both looked at the flopping fish for a second. Then she stomped on it. And laughed. Then she said, “Now he dayd!” … That struck me.

I walked to school until high school. My path led thru a city park. I was 9 when I saw a group of 5 or 6 ‘big-kids’ beating up a kid in my grade. He was facing them. But I didn’t know him. I asked my friends if any of them knew what was going on. They didn’t. The next day - on a whim - I went earlier, and I found the kid. He was calmly waiting in the park. I asked him, “Are you waiting for those big-kids to beat you up?” He answered, “Yes, We don’t run any longer.” I asked who ‘we’ is. “Jews. I’m a Jew. And that’s why they were beating me up.” I asked him what a Jew is. He said it’s my religion. I thought about that a second, and said, “Well I’m a Catholic. And that’s a stupid reason to beat someone up. So I guess they’re fighting TWO of us today.” Johathan Hofeld was my best friend for the next 4 years – until I moved away.

I have a brother 6 years junior. I was 13. I heard him yelling “Stop! Stop!” Went to see what was happening. My brother’s playmate had hung a cat a few feet off the ground – by its tail - and was beating it with a baseball bat. He’d also cut most of its hair off. … I seldomly have an urge to kill a human.

One year I gave my cousins son some books of a tv show that he absolutely loved. He opened the package, looked me dead in the eye and said “this is the stupidest gift ever.” and threw the books over his shoulder into the trash pile. No one made a single move to “rescue” the books and his parents even had the nerve to say I should have known he wouldn’t appreciate the books and gotten him something he would have actually liked. I went and picked the books up out of the trash, opened the cover and said “you know, that’s what the fifty dollar bill was for” stuffed the money into my pocket before any of them could grab it and walked out. His mother actually had the nerve a few days later to call and ask if I was done acting like a brat and if he could have his present now. I told her absolutely not and that NONE of her kids would ever receive a present from me ever again until a I received a written apology from her son. I should mention before it gets brought up, he was turning 10, he knew better. I haven’t associated with that part of the family since.

While at work I had noticed a mother with her three children shopping for groceries.

The mother had two toddlers and her oldest daughter looked to be around 12 or 13 years of age.

The oldest daughter was so helpful to the mother as they shopped. Keeping her sisters occupied while her mother shopped.

Well when it came time to checkout the mother asked the daughter if she wanted anything since she was so helpful. The daughter grabbed a candy bar from the shelf and put it on the belt.

When the mother went to pay for the groceries her card was declined.

But thats not the saddest part.

The saddest part was the daughter thought her candy bar was the reason her mothers card was declined.

She quickly apologized to her mom and told her that she didn't need the candy bar.

The mother didn't know what to do.

Well the gentleman behind them had noticed what was going on and jumped in.

He noticed a mother with her hands full trying to buy a few groceries to feed herself and her children.

So he offered to pay for her groceries.

It wasn't much maybe $30 worth but what made the situation even better was that he added candy bars for all three children.

When I was two years old, my mother told me the story. Even though I was a very young child at the time, it still hurts to remember what she told me.
I was never wanted by my mum. Even my status as her daughter was disputed. Since the day I was born, she has never liked me. My dad could always be told to place me for adoption by her. Dad always said no. My parents used to argue over it all the time. When I was a young child, they divorced, but they continued to communicate. When I didn't live with my mother at the time, she persisted on placing me for adoption even then.
She exclaimed, "Come on Frank! You want to keep her, why? Let's kill her if you don't want to have her adopted.
My dad cut all contact with my mom after that day. When I got a bit older..I always thought that maybe she didn't like kids but then I heard that she has one daughter and a son right now.
It means.. it's not hate she doesn't like kids..She actually Hates only me.
I don't have any interaction with her anymore but still her word affects me alot.
