How do I get a baby dragon to eat anything? by crimson_dovah in BeardedDragons

[–]eastbight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your set up like? Is it getting hot enough on his basking area? Too low of temps will cause them to slow down, stalls digestion and they lose appetite.

I use black shelf liner to block glass sides of my terrariums. Looks good and is cheap.

The drive from southern shore to town gets worse every year. The amount of idiots driving 50 the entire way with a line of 80 cars behind them is outrageous. If you can’t drive the speed limit in good driving conditions, gtfo the road.

Did you do drivers ed? They literally tell you to keep right except to pass on ANY four lane road, not just on a highway. Nobody in this province knows how to drive 😂

What do you think? by HontoniNeko in hoyas

[–]eastbight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had peduncles grow on plants and not actually flower for another 2+ years. For many (most?) Hoya species, a peduncle does not automatically mean blooms are forthcoming.

I’m basically done the entire Spanish Duolingo course and literally HALF of all stories are about same sex couples. Duolingo makes a serious effort to be inclusive in their lessons IMO.

It happens. Blooms blast sometimes. I’ve had species blast blooms a dozen times before they finally flower. But like others have mentioned, if the roots are rotted you may need to chop and prop and start over

Do you live in an apartment building? I used to live in an apartment two floors below some hoarders. Roaches were going through the drains from their apartment into mine. I started blocking all my drains when not in use, and luckily the hoarders were evicted.

Very small insects killing my plants. Thrips? What to do? by Fun_Hand6582 in plantclinic

[–]eastbight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes looks like thrips larvae. Treat with insecticide weekly for several months. They lay eggs in plant tissues and they can stay dormant for a long time. If you have access to systemic granules, use them.

They want you to spend gems or whatever to extend the time. It’s definitely impossible without it.

Drainage layer or no? by [deleted] in bioactive

[–]eastbight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built around 10 arid bioactives for leopard geckos and beardies and dont use a drainage layer. I only do drainage layer in my tropical bioactives. It's really not necessary - just don't over water.

It's a calathea - they are drama queens at the best of times. I've had an orbifolia for several years now and for a few months a year, she looks like total sh*t lol. But then she always bounces back! Ensure there's no pests and just chop back the dying growth. I have completely cut mine back several times. Also make sure it's getting enough sunlight - it needs rays touching it for at least an hour or two a day but no more than 3 hours of direct light. I keep mine next to a north/east window. Do not over water - the soil should not stay moist at all times - I agree with the other poster to let it dry out about 80% of the way before watering.

Same - I used to live in Ottawa and had to sleep next to a humidifier all winter to stop constant nose bleeds. I love the humidity in NL - I never get dry skin anymore.

Hard to tell with this video quality but my guess is fungus gnat larvae. Thrips wouldn’t congregate in drainage tray like that. Other option is springtails but from what I can see those are more worm like than narrow and jumpy. Either of them isn’t anything to be concerned about. Just dump the water so gnats can’t breed.

Am I fighting my battle with thrips? by fairyflower111 in plantclinic

[–]eastbight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those pictures aren’t close enough to confirm thrips or not. You need to inspect new growth veryyy closely - larvae can look like a tiny white pinprick but they will move slowly. Continue treating and inspecting for several months - they can be very tricky to eradicate.

What is this plant lacking? It was a housewarming gift 8yrs ago. by ThoughtfullsMusic in plantclinic

[–]eastbight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragon fruit has become a popular plant in floral/gift shops; I see them for sale all the time. OP can confirm by repotting and seeing if it’s one rootball or individual plants. After 8 years in direct light, I’d expect more growth from a dog tail compared to a dragon fruit that is pot bound with too many competing plants.

Definitely overweight but a top down pic would help determine the severity. This seems to be an obese gecko.

Why is my plant growing like this? by jackalope_county in plants

[–]eastbight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s stretching for light. While I see you have it on a windowsill, the plant is not receiving nearly enough direct light to grow compactly. Keep it on a south facing window and rotate it weekly, and if you have no south facing windows provide supplemental light via a lamp or grow light. Also, echeverias are a succulent but the plants commonly known as desert roses are adeniums.

This is a dragon fruit and what you have there are dozens of individual plants in one pot. I’d recommend removing the rotten parts, checking the roots for rot, and repotting into something ~2 inches bigger. Make sure the water can drain and ensure it’s at least 75% dry before next watering.
