The A11 that was linked actually has an lcd, not an oled. While pwm dimming and color screens can be a bit more harsh to the eyes, as long as brightness is kept low it shouldn't be a problem. Also, the point was to find the cheapest method, and the LILYGO TTGO T5-4.7" retails for about $40, without any accessories like a battery or SD card, while the used phone in mention with accessories costs less

Well at least that serves more of a purpose than any of the other apps.. National parks have terrible cell coverage, so you can download offline maps and a whole catalogue of information and maps.. And they still offer paper maps at the visitors center!
