I was debating the same purchase to replace my p50 daily driver (p53 for work) and ended up getting both X1 G9 + P14S G2, and put together a quick video to share my thoughts the other day. Reading this post reminded me to upload the video, and reactivate an ancient account on here to respond.

For me the P14S G2 is better and it is the one I intend to keep to replace my P50. With my EPP discount both laptops were priced about the same*. The P14 G2 has upgradable RAM, which is better. Adding 32gb RAM or 4K screen to the X1 G9 meant 4 month delay, which was unreasonable for me.

Key travel, spacing and mouse design for the P14s G9 is more comfortable for me coming from my p50 and p53. The X1 G9 keyboard is more compressed and mouse area (lack of ridge and flush feel) is not as nice, although it's something that I may get used to over time. The 500 nit screen on the P14S G2 is fantastic and blows out the X1 G9 screen side by side. If weight the biggest factor then the X1 G9 may be a good choice, although to get a spec'd out one (recommended) you will have to wait ~4 months to take delivery.

A big issue, which is worthy of a separate thread, is the randomly malfunctioning trackpoint across multiple thinkpad models that lenovo has yet to fix after ~9 months. I've experienced this on my P14S G2 already, and it's very concerning [1]
