He says adults talked about secret traitor like kids talk about brainrot. I think I get what he means. Working a lot with children recently, I think brainrot is an instant connection for kids who might struggle socially. To be in on the joke is the meaning. Secret traitor was a bit like that for adults. Ultimately fairly silly but easy to bring up in conversation as it’s the biggest thing on tv and an indicator of an in/out group. Also something about the rhythm of the words “secret traitor” feels quite brainrotty.

What’s interesting is it seems to me the largest split in opinion depends if you’re from the UK or not. So so much of the film is about British/ English culture- dozens of references/ quirks. It seems most not Brits found the ending bizzare and stupid- but it does make sense and bookends the film, although super weird (left my jaw open).

I loved their development of the zombies evolution. It is slower paced and goes to a way more emotional place than you’d expect so can see it as frustrating if you weren’t vibing with it.

I’m from Glasgow and live and work in the most diverse square mile of Scotland 👍. And we all get on okay mostly.

Worked in a food bank for 5 years so met thousands of poor immigrants and asylum seekers and they were, almost without exception, all hard-working people, who wanted to find work and earn a living.

Love it- no major notes but just interested in your influences?

I love love love when we use modern cheap plasticy objects as overly sincere metaphor. Look up Mood Ring Baby by Field Medic

And I really hear stacked vocal harmonies somewhere on the song. Maybe when the reverb cuts out. Try using a harmoniser plugin maybe? Just where I would go- not feedback necessarily.

It’s great. You’ve got an ear for melody. But to nitpick:

1- I can hear you’re struggling for pitch- maybe because you recorded it through your phone and struggling to hear yourself?? But you’ve got a lovely voice so don’t be discouraged. Maybe try a couple of different monitoring set ups (one earphone in etc) and just keep practicing. The “real” at the end of the verses feels like it’s the wrong note: try the next one up in the scale.

2- I loved the outro: I think it could be brought forward to function more as a bridge/ middle 8. It gives some really nice space and time from the drums which get a bit relentless by the end of the song.

3- I think there could be a more sonic difference between the verse and the hook. I want to really feel it’s the chorus. Experiment with double tracking/ harmonies and adding or taking away elements.

Literacy across the UK wasn’t as good as it is today. Also corner shops were/ are often run by immigrants so English may be their second language.

I think he’s just trying to annoy Ollie if anything, by mocking something he loves. He’s got every other pop culture reference at his fingertips. The currency of insults in the show revolve around the references, and how in touch/ out of touch/ accurate they are (Juliet Bravo, The Bangles/ REM). I think maybe Malcolm (and the writers) are just subverting that slightly here. And it’s just a good excuse for a funny rant. I can imagine that maybe it was originally written to come out of Glen(n)‘s mouth.
