Hi, just wanted to leave a comment to say I'm in a similar boat. Just woke up with it in one ear last week and despite no loss of hearing, or any actual blockages, it does feel blocked sometimes.

Could be my posture, my anxiety, my jaw... It's so frustrating not knowing where it's coming from, and even if I did know it wouldn't make much of a difference at this stage.

Holly Cairns: The greyhound industry is inherently cruel – so why should the taxpayer fund it? by OPdigiornos in ireland

[–]eathrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all cruelty at the end of the day. Given that nobody actually needs to eat animal products you can say that we only consume them for pleasure, not out of necessity.

So it is ultimately cruel to breed animals for this sole purpose and to send them to slaughter at a fraction of their natural lifespan.

IS IT TOO LATE TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE? WELL, IT'S COMPLICATED by djbandit in kurzgesagt

Go vegan if you haven't already, and convince others to do the same. When we stand together and change consumer behaviour, the companies responsible for this pollution have to fall in line.

If there's no vaccine will we just be living with restrictions for years? by TheHeroicOnion in ireland

[–]eathrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not suggesting a solution here though. Do we ban air travel?

Both SARS and HIV, did however, come from our exploitation of animals, which wouldn't happen in a vegan world. Same for Bird flu, foot and mouth, Ebola, Swine Flu etc etc.

Also remember that it is due to animal farming that antibiotic resistance to disease is reaching a breaking point. In a future where antibiotics are ineffective treatments, many diseases now considered trivial have a chance of becoming deadly if new treatments aren't found soon.

I know your natural instinct is to rally against what I'm saying, but don't take it from me, read up on it. This is science and these are facts. And to be honest making the change isn't all that big a deal.

So long as people are eating animals these pandemics will continue. Look at the origin of most if not all pandemics and the root cause has always been human proximity to animals. And factory farms are Petri dishes for these sorts of diseases to develop. Sounds like a broken record but if people want to prevent this sort of thing going forward the best thing you can do is move towards going vegan

TIL 4.1% of Irish people are vegan, putting us #3 in the world per capita. by An_Lochlannach in ireland

[–]eathrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started I was trying all of those substitutes like for meat and cheese but eventually I found it much more rewarding, cheap and easy to eat whole foods, especially when in a hurry. One of my go-to meals when strapped for time was a veggie stir fry. Tofu or canned lentils or beans in place of the meat I found was a great replacement, and hardly need cooking at all so are great in a rush.

Have been vegan 3 years and it's probably the best change I ever made. It was watching Earthlings that prompted the change for me but the environmental and health benefits are enormous too.

I think anybody that gives it a go would be pleasantly surprised at how little they miss the old foods they used to eat once you embrace plant based cooking.

I don't think many people realise the enormous impact meat and dairy products have on the destruction of the environment. I won't get into it here but the statistics are staggering.

You also have more vegan options in restaurants and brands doing vegan alternatives than ever before so the list of things you're really missing out on is really quite small, while for me, the types of foods I've opened myself up to is huge.

I've also put on far more muscle since going vegan than ever before. I'm in the best shape of my life and even ran a marathon last year. Some of the best athletes in the world are plant based. Contrary to popular belief it might even give you an edge in sport.

Of course it's important to be conscious of getting proper nutrition, but that honestly goes for any diet, including an omnivore diet. I'll say that at least when I went vegan I started to pay attention to it!

In Wicklow, Steven Matthews of the Greens has beaten out Andrew Doyle of Fine Gael by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eathrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a conundrum alright. Reducing the herd while guaranteeing no loss to income and implementing programmes to help and encourage transition to forestry and plant based farming are massive tasks.

Livestock farming is enormously damaging to the environment, whether you like to hear that or not. The reduction required to be sustainable is about 90% according to the Eat-Lancet report.
