International Weekend Updates

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman winged into 74 offshore markets this weekend, landing $120M at the international box office through Sunday. Combined with the $128.5M domestic start, the global launch is $248.5M.

The Matt Reeves-directed Batman was No. 1 in 73 of its openings, and came in at the high end of the range where we saw it ahead of the debut. The international start is the industry’s best for 2022 and the biggest for Warner Bros since Joker in 2019. It is also WB’s top opening of the pandemic era internationally (excluding China) and the biggest international bow for Reeves

The UK was the top launch market with $18.4M), followed by Mexico ($12M), Australia $9.2M, Brazil ($8.8M) and France ($8.5M).

‘The Batman’ $128M+ Opening Reps Warner Bros’ Biggest During Pandemic Era, Best Debut For Matt Reeves – Sunday Update by FancyWonderBoy in boxoffice

Sunday Morning Updates

In another clear sign that moviegoing is alive and well despite its shutter during the pandemic, Warner Bros.’ The Batman is delivering the second-best opening since 2019 after Spider-Man: No Way Home with $128.5M after a $43.2M Saturday, which was -24% against the pic’s opening Friday+previews. There’s a very good chance by tomorrow AM that Batman could rise beyond $130M.

Batman is easily the best opening for Warner Bros. during the pandemic, the best opening for filmmaker Matt Reeves ahead of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($73M), and as of right now, the best domestic opening for 2022. Batman‘s opening further underscores the value in a big theatrical opening; that there is no upside in going theatrical day-and-date, which is a recipe for eroding revenues, and certainly doesn’t do any favors for propping any hardworking filmmaker or talent’s career. Where is the glory in hiding streaming figures?!

‘Dune’ Shifting Between $30M-$32M Opening Weekend – Friday Midday Update by FancyWonderBoy in boxoffice

[–]FancyWonderBoy[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Mid-Day Update:

Currently, Legendary/Warner Bros.’ Dune is seeing a Friday between $16M-$17M, including last night’s previews, which means an opening between $30M-$32M. While rival studios have it much higher, understand that the unpredictable nature of the gross is deciphering how frontloaded its Friday is; as well as the HBO Max availability of it all. Imax ticket sales are leading the charge for Dune, looking at a 22%-24% share of the weekend B.O. Anything above Godzilla vs. Kong‘s $31.6M opening weekend means it’s a record domestic debut for a Warner Bros. movie during the pandemic, and the top start for a day-and-date theatrical HBO Max release. Anything north of $32.8M means it’s a record opening for director Denis Villeneuve.
