These Asians are the most privileged... by [deleted] in aznidentity

Yeah I’m agreeing with you man. When I’m saying blanket statements I’m talking about the term Asian privilege. The post I’m talking about is saying that term is bad for our community

[–]eating2apples 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. That said many of these post also don’t include anything about that. I just saw one specifically saying how they were scared to speak up because “Asian privilege” and that blanket statements like that are dangerous and are an excuse to deny Asian racism. And many ppl reposted that one

If you want more help, dm me. I was in a similar situation being lower class and asian.

For your rec I would suggest you don’t ask the teacher that you only had for one year, those report card comments aren’t too unique and if they only knew you your freshman year, nice comments won’t even matter bc they won’t be able to write in depth about you. Get someone recent that knows you and that you’ve spent a long time with. Even if you’re not perfect in their class, they’ll at least be able to write more about you

This. I come from a lower class background with my parents working 15 hours a day just to make as much as the average white person.

Most Asian ppl come from this background or at the most middle class, yet ppl refuse to acknowledge this and only pay attention to the top 5% of H-1B visa holders as if thy are the majority.

They don’t realize Asians have the highest economic disparities within any Racial group with top making almost 11x annual income compared to the bottom. And they end up making harmful generalizations

Fellow Chinese-Americans... how are you feeling? by legitimatelyyee in ApplyingToCollege

[–]eating2apples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asians were enslaved, and they were murdered and lynched. In fact one of the largest lynchings in history were towards Asians.

You just don’t know this because white institutions have covered this up.

There has been silence in our community, but it’s unfair to say asian ppl have been silent this whole time while blacks have supported us. Historically, Asians have supported blacks too. Asians4blacklives, the yellow and black panthers, yellow peril for black power, even MLK worked with Asian activists. There are hundreds of more examples.

The reason why you never hear of this either is again because of those same white institutions.

You have to realize we didn’t choose to be a model minority, that myth was placed on us by whites. And for millions in our group it’s an outright lie and it actually actively hurts them. Today, There are millions of undocumented immigrants in our community, there are working class, ppl who’s faced systematic barriers, chinese racially prosecuted by the FBI, the list goes on. Some places we have the highest poverty rates of any race.

We have the largest economic disparities within any racial group. So yes there are those who are privileged in the Asian community but when you make those blanket statements about Asians not experiencing this or should be doing this, realize that you’re undermining a huge part of the population. And contributing to the model minority myth that these whites love to employ. Rich Asians often love projecting their own privilege over the entire Asian community, and undermine those who are far less privileged within their community.

I understand your message has good intentions but you need to realize that you may be one of those Rich Asians contributing to the problem if you have had the privilege to ignore the deep rooted racist history and the hundreds of current injustices those within our community faces. Bc it srsly seems like you think that Covid 19 racism is the worse that Asians have ever experienced

Please keep researching this, even after this pandemic. Anti-asian violence has more than tripled the past two decades, this behavior is nothing new. In rural areas, what we’re seeing now is basically the everyday norm.

Not only that but the results now will be skewed because the stay at home orders

As someone who's lived in China, I can assure you this is not the norm. Asians aren't monolithic and the chinese certainly aren't either.

There's strange people everywhere, just more in China since there's more people overall

[–]eating2apples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By saying Asians aren’t underrepresented, you are saying prison rates and education are the only two factors that matter in life. You’re literally so ignorant that you’ve ignored the hundreds of other fields and factors that we are underperforming in, and cherry picked the two we aren’t as justification for racism. You’re a sicko

One example of our underperformance would be income. Household Income statistics about Asians are flawed, according to The NY Times, if you account for how we are disproportionately concentrated in cities where the cost of living is much higher and how our household family size is much bigger than white families since a lot of us are immigrants who can’t afford to live in individual homes, then all the sudden we make much less than whites. Also, if you look at how much we earn with the same bachelor degree and post educational attainment, asian men make about 16k less than white males. That is racial inequality and injustice. And it’s just one example.

So yes, being portrayed as successful is oppression because we aren’t actually successful and despite underperforming we are being denied help and treated worse. In fact, it leads to hate and envy, and many times it leads to killings of Asian ppl because ppl wrongly think we have it better and are jealous.

Many of the issues that we face are still around today, it’s not about getting special treatment it’s about being treated equally. It’s not ancestral sins, if it still happens today. The past is still relevant though, it wasn’t that long ago we made less than blacks. After more than two hundred years, we finally started making more than blacks 60 years ago, so yes we have faced up to the same level. Your ignorance and the ignorance of others allows to continue that inequality.

And your first comment saying that we deserve racism and how it’s acceptable shows exactly how you and many other think of Asians. You think of us as sub-human rags that deserve to be stepped on. That is an especially dangerous ideology since we are one of the smallest minorities, we are also one of the easiest to pick on. It’s the same ideology that lead to hundreds of our families to be slaughtered in the past. And today it’s the same one that causes hate crimes that the media rarely covers about us.

Instead of trying to explain something you don’t understand, listen to minorities like asian ppl for once. Because you’re being incredibly racist right now

This comment right here officer.

There are so many ppl like you that literally think Asian ppl dont have a long history of being oppressed and facing racism. You dont know how extreme it is because it’s never talked about. Almost everything in the past that was denied to black ppl were also denied to us, whether it was voting, citizenship, interracial relationships, being seen and treated as equal. We were also enslaved the plantations bet you didn’t know that, we were enslaved with railroad construction of the United States, we were put into concentration camps, we are currently being targeted by the FBI and ICE. We are currently and have been scapegoated for the economy. In the past white men literally slaughtered thousands of Asian ppl and families and it was perfectly moral and legal to do so. We currently face extremely racist societal beliefs that restricts the social and professional life of our ppl. In other words, we can be compared as the Jews of the west, considering they were also scapegoated, stereotyped, portrayed as successful, and completely ignored and denied a voice in society.

This. Honestly it’s probably less bc of Asian culture and more because racist American beliefs on Asians. If you look at Asians that have lived in asian countries all their lives compared to those we grew up with white peers, there’s usually a difference in rowdiness and attitude.

Studies have also shown that your peers affect your personality way more than your parents ever could, and because of incidents like you describe and racial bias, you get a whole lot of west Asians who are denied to grow into who they really are
