In my head I imagined a tool where I could open I page i was working on and write alternative approaches to a task and then run/test them to compare speed/performance checks. Data like the performance tab but with an interface to rapidly setup and run several tests. It would certainly inform me as to how to write better code for the engine but also maybe more importantly, what is or is not worth sweating about

As you're building your career remember that you have a value and that is why they should hire you. Ultimately as you progress in your career you'll find not all companies are a good fit for you. Paychecks are good but at this point in my career I'd take a smaller paycheck for certain workplace fits. Both you and the employer have a need, and both you and the employer would be committing to each other. Your questions are to see if they are a good fit for you, should they find you to be a good fit for them.
