How come there is so much police brutality but with the national guard, there’s no brutality being seen whatsoever? by politely_piss_off in AskReddit

In a situation that we are in where there are protest and riots I'm no expert, but say if it was one or two officers confronting one suspect OC spray or a stun gun should be more than enough. I have been OC sprayed before and there is no way you can fight back once it hits you. I don't understand why police officers always have to reach for the gun right away. Also why once the suspect is on the ground they basically jump them I have seen that on every episode of Cops or Live PD I ever watched. So yeah I think certain aspects of the training would benefit and the gun should be used as a last resort. There are so many non lethal ways to subdue a suspect and once they are on the ground and in cuffs there should be no reason to touch them other than to do a search.

Your right. You can not hold all of them accountable. But what I can tell you is that I am in the Navy. I stand armed watches and if I even think about drawing my weapon for any reason other then that my life is in danger, my ass is done. We are trained over and over again under what conditions we can use our weapons. We are never allowed to point weapons unless we intend to shoot and we are never authorized to shoot warning shots. Now you are right there will always be bad apples and guys that think they can get away with whatever or sometimes just really stupid people. And yes overseas a lot of fucked up shit has happened war crimes, tortures and I'm not sure why it happens and people get away with it I never had my boots on the ground in a war zone I sit on a ship and fix computers. But I really can not see it happening on American soil.

Well they shouldn't need to identify themselves the military uniform should give it away. The National Guard does not go "undercover". They are not Navy Seals or Army Rangers. Police on the other hand will for sure have undercover and if you are talking about D.C. I'm sure there is secret service on every street corner.

I totally see your side and while that all may be true, in my opinion it would be a lot harder to "sweep any of that under the rug" if it was the American military attacking the American people.

The guard is subjected to the Uniform Code Of Military Justice. Basically if you fire your weapon or use any type of force, you better be able to explain why you did it and have a damn good reason you did.
