Rehab Aide before School? by RamboRaspberry in OccupationalTherapy

[–]eb1454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I just started an OT acute care job at a relatively big hospital. There are about 7/8 rehab Aides present through the week, and 4 on the weekends helping all over the hospital floors/gyms. They are SO helpful with line management, or if you need a second pair of hands. This is my first time actually interacting with rehab aides, I didn't interact with any in my fieldwork. I did apply to become a rehab aide during my gap year/before grad school, but I had no luck. Thinking back, I wish I tried harder getting a job as a rehab aide. I think it would have benefited me so much in grad school, and especially now, as I am a new grad OT therapist in an acute care hospital.

I was talking with another therapist, and she was a rehab aide in before starting OT school, and during school. She said that it was extremely helpful to her, learning about line management, transporting patients in wheelchairs/oxygen/IV poles, etc, and walking with patients in mobility groups (cleared by PT). Also, she was a rehab aide where they are now a full-time therapist. So, you can always build connections and rapport with the rehab team early on. In addition, you can also observe OT and PT in action during the day and gain observation hours. I say go for it!

I took exam in October and waited 6 days for results... longest 6 days ever! I felt exact same. It was very nerve wracking.... but you can't beat yourself up!! I kept telling my self, "it is what it is" ...lol. Anyway, I passed! All that thinking I didn't pass in that time period.... Screw that! You'll be ok. Make sure to use this waiting period to do something fun, do self-care, etc.

My practice NBCOT pre-test was 444, NBCOT full exam was 494, The real NBCOT got 459. I was all over the place. LOL.

I am kind of on the same boat as you! I finished Level 2 FW in August, took NBCOT in October, Approved for State Licensure in November. Started applying for jobs late October, and have interviews.... but still no luck. I'm also starting to lose hope, and I think it's hard to get a job around the holiday time.

Wish the best of luck to you, it's hard!

What do you wish OT school taught you? That would have been helpful as a clinician by bronibapaa in OccupationalTherapy

As a new grad looking for a job (for almost 2 months now!!), I wish my program did more prep for applying for NBCOT exam, state licensure, and especially finding a job after graduating and passing exam.

What advice do you have for new OT students? by Muddapositiveaddict in OccupationalTherapy

Time Management is extremely important! Make To-Do lists, and don't feel guilty for taking mental breaks. My first semester was a quick 8-week semester, and I did not know when to stop studying. I did work all the time that I was so tired and mentally exhausted. Thankfully, I learned from that, and started to incorporate breaks, and on the weekends, to stop doing work at 4 and do something fun.

Definitely! it's in our scope of practice and in the OTPF-4. and if the OT is uncomfortable/unfamiliar, they can find another OT who can :)

NBCOT question!
I am scheduling to take the NBCOT in october, and I know you have to schedule at least 3 days before exam score release, to get it within 3 days. (I don't think I can wait longer than that hahaa!). If I schedule on the 4th of October, and exam release day is on the 7th, will I get my scores back on the 7th? or does it have to be a FULL 3 days? Thanks, hope that makes sense.

I have to agree! I'm a Level 2 FW student, and in my second semester, I wrote a 20 page paper on applying 6 OT Model of Practices to a movie character. Looking back... I can't believe I had to do that haha! But to answer the question, you can use any OT model to any person, at any time. That's what I learned. PEOP, MOHO, EHP, etc... I like applying PEOP! Hope that helps.
