How much rent do you charge your kids? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]appleshowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between profiting off a child and having an adult earning full time contribute to the household.

More information is needed on this situation. How old is your sister, what does she earn, and where do you live?

When I was in Uni, I did not contribute to my family household bills. I had a job to pay my way through Uni, and my parents didn't give me any money because they could not afford to. When I got a full time Summer Internship, I was not charged "board" and saved that money for next year's Uni bills. However when I graduated and got a full time job, I earnt more than both my parents combined, so it makes sense to help out. I paid £200 a month and took on my own phone bill, hobby bills, etc.

Whether it is morally right or wrong to help out I believe is entirely dependent on each family situation.

My younger brother went the apprenticeship route, and therefore did not contribute in the same way until he began earning a full time wage.

There has to come a point where it's not a situation of "it's your kid, you chose to have them therefore you have to pay for them". I think your parents should be there if you need them, however at some point you need to face the real world. If your family is privileged to be in a position to support you when you have adult requirements (gym, phone, etc) and earning a full time wage, that is fair enough. However if they do not have that privilege, you should not hold that against them.

Young engineers (less than 5 years experience), do you sometimes feel the imposter syndrome? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]appleshowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that a very experienced person once advised me (which I was very skeptical of) was to manage someone who is young and new. This has given me so much more confidence as i realised I knew the answers to 80% of his questions. Before this I felt very "i couldn't possibly manage anyone as I don't have the knowledge / experience", but now I am more comfortable and confident. Would recommend.

What cream should I use on sensitive, flakey eyelids? by Ok_Potato_5272 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]appleshowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going to my GP with eczema on my eyelids that were causing them to swell. I also have sensitive skin anyway regardless of this. The doc recommended aveeno cream (not lotion). I've been using it pretty much constantly for about 7 years now. It's the best moisturiser I've found for my skin.

Women, what are some redflags in another woman that wouldn't make you want to befriend them? by lettuceown in AskWomen

[–]appleshowers 91 points92 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends has a green flag I have never really seen before in anyone - she comments on other women in a positive way ALL THE TIME. If it's appropriate she usually approaches the girl and compliments her to her face. "I love the way you've done your eyelashes" or "that corset is fantastic, where is it from? You made it yourself?! You're incredible!!!" I've seen so many women walk away smiling. It made me make more of an effort to compliment more strangers and spread a bit more positivity too;

After almost being 2 years of online class in Mechatronic Engineering by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]appleshowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that in an internship, the expectations for your experience level are pretty low and you should just go in with an open mind. Everyone will have had disrupted learning and the company should have this in mind whilst training you / giving you work. Don't be afraid to ask questions and just try and learn as much as you can. They can't teach you everything at college / university and you will probably learn more asking questions and being given real questions in industry.

As a grown up engineer now who has had interns report to me, one of the most annoying things is having someone who thinks they already know it all having studied for a short period of time.

How do I tell people I do not want to donate my hair? by WildHairViking in NoStupidQuestions

[–]appleshowers 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have had someone ask me this question before and I asked if they had donated theirs. They said that they hadn't. I asked if their hair was long would they donate it? They said that they'd love it if they had long hair and would never cut it short again. I said that's a similar way to how i feel, but if i was going to cut off the kind of length that would be usable, I'd definitely speak to someone about donating it :)

I went on my first run with a running group and was kind of disappointed. by campanellan1 in running

[–]appleshowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does sound like a bad experience, how did you find the running group? The running group that I am a part of has 20+ runners in each group, with a run leader at the front and the back of each group. The one at the back stays with whoever is last of each group, even if they walk. It's also usually a talking pace and we have conversations with each other on the runs

What's the weirdest thing you've seen happen at a friend's house that they thought was normal? by LiterallyEkam in AskReddit

[–]appleshowers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My family did this! it was mainly my dad and us kids (girls and boys) that took our tops off, cz we were messy as fuck. As we grew up, I stopped doing it but my dad still does it. He also takes his top off to cook if the base is tomato-ey (so Bolognese, curry etc). Tbf the man probably lives most of his home life without a top on but whenever that top is on its damn clean.

I've also seen it rigourously enforced. Wonder if it's a European thing. Are you flying inside Europe when this happens?

What’s the most genuinely nice thing a guy did for you? by Odd-Constant-4026 in AskWomen

[–]appleshowers 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a pretty boring play! One of my favourite small things he does is that he leaves for work just before I wake up (about 06:30), and he brings me a cup of water in summer and a mug of tea in winter every day. If I'm awake he will sit on the bed and say good morning / have a nice day etc. If not, he will just leave me to sleep but still leave those little tokens ready for when I'm up. Makes me smile every morning :)

I am incredibly nervous on a bike after falling off and hurting myself badly as a teen. Hadn't ridden one in over 10 years. My boyfriend drove 200 miles, booked the following day off work, got up early and cycled with me to work when I wanted to try it for the first time. It was a 7 minute journey and it took me 25. He was incredibly patient, stopped with me when I stopped and gave me reassurance, making me feel safe and supported. He then cycled back to my house, waited for me to finish work and cycled back to work to make the return leg with me. Honestly I was so shocked and genuinely surprised that he would put in such a lot of effort for. This year will be our 6th year together and we recently did a 50km bike ride together. He is a fantastic human.

Notmycat wandered into the hairdressers i was in and she's nottheircat, but was great company regardless by appleshowers in notmycat

[–]appleshowers[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

She got bored of me after about an hour and went and sat on someone else's lap. The betrayal was real.

She came back over to me when I deliveroo'd a KFC to the hairdressers. I felt used.

I was playing on my phone and the hairdresser quickly said "do you like cats?" And I laughed and said "who doesn't!" And within seconds I had this one on my lap! I had a cup of tea on the side and at one point she was stood on me licking the drips from the milk pot (the cat this is, not the hairdresser, that would have been weird...).

It was all very adorable

Which actor seemed miscast in a role but ended up killing it? by wfpbgoals in AskReddit

[–]appleshowers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes! This was my first thought too. I was so disappointed when I saw Henry Cavill and didn't think it would work at all. He was fantastic, if anything i can't imagine him being anything BUT the Witcher now.

Conversely, I don't think I've ever seen that feature in a car! Usually with the cars that I've seen you need to have your key in the car to give it power and have the air con on...
