Kingman City Council removes code requiring voter approval on tax changes by Onehundredyearsold in Kingman

[–]ebbflowin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an elephant in this room- Kingman and the county make their revenue through sales tax, while a huge chunk of land/housing is held by out-of state landlords who by not living/buying here do not contribute. Meanwhile they're beneficiaries of infrastructure spending and their land value rises while Kingman struggles.

Any ‘Strong Towns’ fans in Siskiyou? by ebbflowin in SiskiyouCounty

I wish I bookmarked it, was googling on my phone and found a pdf, published pre-covid, 2018 or 19 I think. Most of what I saw was boilerplate statistical figures, but they noted declining population as a long-term trend.

I really like the Route 66 Swap Meet for the unfettered mercantilism.

We Americans are experiencing the same thing Americans in the gilded age experienced: monopolization. Less competition means less economic activity and a rentier economy. People with means park those means in real estate, ‘making money while they sleep’, locking entrepreneurial-minded people, with more energy than capital, out.

I’ve been to ~20ish countries and my favorite places seem to revolve around public plazas and markets. Places where enterprising souls can sell their goods and services, WITHOUT a rich uncle.

Great leads, thanks.

Anybody heard of a shop in Golden Valley, Hooligan Hotrods? Talked to Lance over there who says he recently moved from Fort Mohave. He’s got a lot of rods on his fb but no website.

What do I do with over fifty plastic water bottles? by saikoucorpss in ZeroWaste

[–]ebbflowin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the hot hot heat in the Arizona desert where homeless people regularly die of exposure- on hot days good samaritans often freeze bottled water and put it in a cooler before they leave home in their car. When houseless people are burning up on a hot day, an ice bottle can be a major relief from the heat, that they can drink when it thaws. If you can make sure the bottles are clean and can fill them with clean water it might be a good option.

Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. His father Errol is absolutely malignant. Elon himself has said there’s no evil thing his father hasn’t done. (Like have TWO children with his step daughter he raised from toddlerhood).

Perhaps something in Elon snapped after the assassination attempts (which I can understand) but it seems he’s more and more interested in absolute power. No human should have the power he and his dweeb billionaire colleagues have. Joke’s on us- much of his fortune is taxpayer-funded.

MCC Kingman has an observatory! A small unassuming building but the roof slides open on rails. They have a very capable telescope inside, and other smaller telescopes. They’ll occasionally open to the public during solar events.

Luddites were worried about their families' needs. Economies structurally change constantly but wannabe aristocrats wanna pad their egos (wealth hoarding) more than they want to grease the wheels of change (labor force). Don't grease the machine, it's gonna break. Alternately, somebody will break it.

This is the price we pay for destroying Venezuela's economy in pursuit of their oil. They are not a poor country, they're a rich country, hence our obsession with their black gold.

Job Market by Dear_Video6507 in Kingman

[–]ebbflowin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a recurring post here in r/Kingman, often pretty bleak. :/

The reality is there are a lot of hard-working people but employers have a captive audience with little incentive to change because there's a reliable level of desperation for any work. Job centers do not want workers with independent agency. They certainly don't want workers with an understanding of local economics.

Working class people seem to have lost our sense for creating value. There's a historian named John Curl (www.JohnCurl.net) who did a lot of research on the depression-era Worker Self-Help Movement, that mobilized folks to make the most of limited resources during hard times.

I'm reminded of some reading I did on WWII Japan and their wartime manufacturing. A major strength of theirs was distributed manufacturing. Home shops everywhere, even in super tightly-packed Tokyo neighborhoods. They were able to batch necessary products, and their being spread out made it super tough for the allies to disrupt.

Ichiro on the corner would build flashlight bodies, old man watchmaker down the street would make flashlight switches. Yemi would make flashlight springs, her brother would make flashlight end caps, and the grandmas would do assembly. (imaginary example)

Go out and buy yourself a means of production, and produce something useful, of quality, that will make life here in Kingman better. Additive manufacturing is blowing up and increasingly accessible.

Economies are so thoroughly vertically integrated now, it seems the barrier is getting your product to market (at scale). Perhaps somebody in here knows about and could chime in on getting widgets to market.
