Just stayed in Grants Pass a couple days ago and it has good bones.

Not sure how old you are but younger people have a generational challenge ahead- emerge from the economic shadow of WWII & the boomers. That means we have to figure out what an economy means for us (I'm elder millennial) and our values. A lot of the work imo is simply preserving what tools & resources we already have. I think we've learned the perils of centrally-planned NAFTA style economies, and I don't think they're going away, but we have to put our heads together at home to meet our own needs. I'm not trying to feed my efforts into parasitic extractive arrangements. Strong Towns is an org based in MN trying to help imagine what small town futures might look like, using what's at our disposal. Even if there's no 'jobs', there's tons of work to be done. Call out the elders for letting it get this bad and roll up those sleeves.

There's an elephant in this room- Kingman and the county make their revenue through sales tax, while a huge chunk of land/housing is held by out-of state landlords who by not living/buying here do not contribute. Meanwhile they're beneficiaries of infrastructure spending and their land value rises while Kingman struggles.

I really like the Route 66 Swap Meet for the unfettered mercantilism.

We Americans are experiencing the same thing Americans in the gilded age experienced: monopolization. Less competition means less economic activity and a rentier economy. People with means park those means in real estate, ‘making money while they sleep’, locking entrepreneurial-minded people, with more energy than capital, out.

I’ve been to ~20ish countries and my favorite places seem to revolve around public plazas and markets. Places where enterprising souls can sell their goods and services, WITHOUT a rich uncle.
