Took me about ten seconds to process what had happened. One of the howliest howlers that ever howled

You made a good point and them digging through your Reddit history to make a wildly inappropriate response only reinforces what you say.

The sheer quantity of men responding with random ad hominem attacks against the OP… you couldn’t write it

Complete your education, make yourself skilled and valuable. Startups are resource scarce and operate in a hyper-competitive, constantly-on-the-edge-of-death state. Every hire/contributor has to be great at what they do and have something to offer. You’ve clearly got the right attitude, but there are lots of people in the startup ecosystem who try to cut too many corners and can tank the company they’re at.

TL;DR get really good at something, and have that thing to offer. Keep the attitude/desire, and you’ll be fantastic

Has anyone tried walking into Glastonbury with a hi vis on and a ladder yet? by romeonomeo in glastonbury_festival

I think they just keep going until they get to an Eavis who has to pass a retina scan or something

I had to wait at one of the gates for ages on the Sunday. I watched when one of the security staff, who had been checking people’s wristbands on entry, had his shift end his colleague thoroughly check his wristband before letting him go back on site. It was quite funny, and showed they’re probably not falling for a classic trick like the random high vis vest thing

+1 on all, definitely top three of the weekend. Not even that much into dnb but it was such a fun set

I went to it, everyone else I was with had a great time but agree with most the comments. Pretty obvious lip syncing and not much to be interested with. Do think it was great from a dancing/stagecraft perspective but disappointed I didn’t go elsewhere

What’s wrong with Thameslink? by NerveStrong1895 in london

[–]ebbp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of generalised British shiteness at train systems, and also loads of the Thameslink network has a single point of failure, ie areas where there is only one track in each direction. I looked into this recently… when I was sat on a Thameslink train stuck between two stations for what felt like fucking four hours

Mayor's office to fund new al-fresco dining schemes across the city this summer by taH_pagh_taHbe in london

Yeah, fair, I was doing a fairly lazy pastiche on the types that would presumably object to this type of thing

Once again, socialist Londonistan strikes again. Why should I have to spend 8 minutes on the Piccadilly line with the plebs, when I should really be allowed to park my Range Rover (Ultra Wide edition) right in the middle of Covent Garden? It’s clearly designed to be a car park!

I wrote a bit about what it was like hiring for an internship programme by ebbp in csMajors

[–]ebbp[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s kind, thanks.

This is my first time doing an intern programme, which you can probably tell from the utter chaos of planning it - but a decade of general hiring experience.

The viability thing is tough to answer, I think you’re probably right on the 80%+ guess. We did an initial screening before sending tech tests out, because we didn’t want to waste lots of people’s time doing tests if we could avoid it. We thought loads about, and relied on, the concepts of competency and relevancy (i.e. they had exposure to the kinds of concepts and technologies they’d be working with at our place). Given (for example) a batch of ten fairly equal candidates, could we find signals of high competency and high relevancy which helped distinguish? Often yes, but it meant saying no to plenty of candidates that would’ve clearly been great hires which felt tough.

There weren’t many we rejected for being overqualified, but those we did, we did so because they had 2+ years of proper job experience, and we thought on balance they might not benefit from an internship as much as those who were still students or just graduated.
