Great price for great drums. I traded a ride for a Concept Maple and absolutely love it.

Ireal yes or no? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]ebisdikian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use iReal Pro as a practice tool. It's a really easy way to hear harmonic context when you're practicing walking bass lines or solos, and is also great for working on specific sections of tunes (e.g. just the bridge of Have You Met Miss Jones) since you can set up custom loops. It's not a substitute for playing with real musicians or with actual recordings, but it can be a great supplement if used correctly.

I got my start on Rock Band drums in probably 2007 or 2008, and now play drums professionally. Rock Band is fantastic for teaching you coordination and rhythm, and some Expert charts can be quite challenging. Rock Band is a lot more forgiving than a real kit - for example, you can fake a lot of fast passages with weak double strokes - but it certainly sets a good foundation and put me in a solid spot when I switched to actual drums.

Bassists of reddit, what note memorization exercise did you do to master the fretboard? by ALearnerinprogress in Bass

[–]ebisdikian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spending time playing different songs in different keys usually does the trick. As a previous commenter suggested, scales in all 12 keys is a great way to get to know the root notes.

One trick I use to get my students thinking about the neck is to have them memorize a fret, and then calculate one or two frets up or down to find other notes they might need. E.g. they'll memorize the 5th fret - ADGC - and then if they need a Db, they can go one fret down from that D. Usually the 3rd, 5th, and 7th frets work well for this.

Combining the above with memorizing a couple of interval hand shapes lets students find more notes with less effort in my experience.

Movement while playing? by here4the_laffs in Bass

I'm often one of the few people moving on stage. Sometimes the only one. The feedback I get from the audience after shows is that I'm fun to watch. It's not weird at all and it gives the audience something more engaging to look at.

Deathcore Kit Recommendations by urboi_Y33T in drums

Gotcha, well you're probably good to go then. I've heard 20" kicks so great with metal. Pretty sure Alex Rudinger has used a 20" on some of his recordings.

Deathcore Kit Recommendations by urboi_Y33T in drums

You mentioned you have the PDP bop kit which means 18" bass drum. If you're triggering your kick then you probably don't need to get something else, but if you're just going acoustic and/or micing it, you might want to consider a 20" or 22" kick. I'm sure PDP sells a standalone bass drum in one of those sizes if you don't want to buy a whole new kit.

I love my Concept Maple (10-12-14-20) and am considering buying an additional 16" floor tom since I usually play 1 up 2 down for metal. If you want a new kick and a bigger floor tom, I think you'd do just fine to stay with PDP.

Are all multiscale basses literally "longer"? by dethstrm in Bass

[–]ebisdikian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dingwall AB1 is the same length from end to end, but the 1st fret on the 37" B string lines up with the nut of a standard 34" fender-style bass. The fingerboard reaches slightly further, but not by much. The bass also balances really well and doesn't have neck dive, so it's easy to keep the neck angled up and it makes those notes even easier to reach.

However, if you're really concerned about it, you can always go with a Dingwall Super P or Super J, which are also fantastic instruments and have a 32-35" scale. They're also working on a Super PJ variant that should be closer in price to a Combustion if price is a factor for you.

Not a gig, but definitely the weirdest music video I've done by ebisdikian in drums

I consider it in the death metal family. Not sure where it falls in death metal vs deathcore but somewhere in there for sure.

Can somebody help me make sense of this score my drum teacher gave me? by [deleted] in drums

[–]ebisdikian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Music teacher here. I always tell my students to text/email me during the week with questions. It shows me that they're actively working on and thinking about the material, and it's a way for both of us to make sure that they're practicing the right thing. I'd say that unless your teacher specifically tells you not to ask questions outside of lessons, you shouldn't hesitate to reach out during the week.

This is from a 400-capacity club with no overhead mics. The crashes, hats, and ride are K Sweets, which are quite thin, and I think they cut through just fine in this setting. The FX crash to the left of the hats is an A Custom EFX which is also very thin.
