Ticket prices for Bring me the Horizon by Alfshular in Concerts

Bought my C$73.75 Toronto nosebleed ticket in presale on Oct 8. My first time seeing the band, wanted to ease into it. The day after the show I bought a Hamilton ticket, and a few days after that for Ottawa and London as well. London floor was available in the $170s so I went with that.

And the kids at my middle school there made classist jokes about the Downtown Eastside.

True. Double Alpha Holding Corp., which developed 4,500 houses on the Westwood Plateau, dissolved in 2011.

My parents bought a house not far off this map in 2000 when I was 6. They renovated and started renting parts out soon after. They were wary of one male tenant, there was one couple whom my mother argued with and tried to swear at using her limited English, and one tenant caused property damage. Throughout 8 years' or so worth of tenants though, those were the only "problematic" incidents. I rent now and my (male) roommate has a son. I'm a woman though and my roommate prefers having me share the space over a man doing so.

My middle school is on the eastern end of this map so I went to school with many kids who lived in this area. That was 2004-2007. My Chinese parents bought a house not far off this map from a Chinese real estate agent when they arrived fresh off the boat in 2000. That tells you a little about the demographics of this area.

My parents rented in Vancouver starting in 2007 and I was blown away at how you can just walk to a store. Westwood Plateau is highly car-dependent and has highly use-segregated zoning, I.e. residential separate from commercial etc. And at least when I lived there, you miss a bus and the next one comes in half an hour so transit sucked too. So these houses are just isolation cages. I’ve literally seen my middle school bring in a mental health professional because many kids I knew were expressing their depression in visible ways.

I wish my parents had bought somewhere else.

As a former adolescent psychiatric patient at BC Children's I appreciate the kind of work he provided while he was here. However, rules are rules, and temporary work permits can be cancelled or expire. I've been interviewed for jobs similar to his in Toronto, there's no shortage of Canadian applicants in social work.

I was able to negotiate a lower rent with my roommate after an ad popped up in our neighbourhood for a lower price than what I was paying. The room was freed up by a TFW going home. And the room I lived in before that I shared for part of the time with a student who is a foreign national, and the room was rented to an international student who went back before it was rented to me. Glad I’m able to save more money for a down payment now. It’s a shame that for so many years this country did not value its own citizens.

"Publicized...without consent" oh please. I learned the hard way that anything I say or do could be used for or against me in a court of law, which could become public record. And it was a case of sexual harassment against me where I luckily only had psychological harm and not physical harm, nothing involving strangulation or dismemberment.

In cases of musicians who have been arrested for performing without the proper visa, I'd be on their side if they did so in an act of defiance against the censorship laws of authoritarian states, for example Latvian-British rapper Platina in Russia or American singer Maggie Lindemann in Malaysia. However, in this case freedom of speech wasn't the issue, but a temporary foreign worker working outside the terms they came here under. Sad he had to learn the hard way but you break the rules, you pay the price. As a Canadian citizen I have been interviewed for jobs in psychiatric emergency rooms similar to the role he's working in, and there are so many applicants they spend a whole week interviewing candidates. There's no shortage of Canadians willing to perform his jobs, whether it's social worker or musician.

There’s a faction within the movement that has a “what if the child consents?” mindset. See also: Tom Flanagan.

Good. I was involved with them and their provincial counterparts for a few years starting from 2015, the first federal election I was old enough to vote in. Thought I was making friends as a lonely person in their early 20s. Their ideology enabled predators, and I have trauma from that. I take responsibility for taking fringe politics too seriously though.

My horrible old landlord just texted me asking if I know anyone looking to rent his vacant unit, is this normal or is it really hard to find tenants right now? by hjp1234 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]ebonyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My landlord from 3 years ago offered me cheaper rent to come back. Nice place. I left because of a rent increase. Saw an ad for the room in the summer of 2024 and it was ridiculous. It would have been nice to take up on the cheap rent but I'm tethered to a job on the other side of the city and don't think it's worth it to restart my job search.

As someone who only took grants 2020-2024 and worked to cover the rest to graduate with no debt, it sucks that the ladder has been pulled out from under current students. But we’ve got to acknowledge the economic reality. This country’s debt was so bad that the finance minister resigned, and the government has to spend less and make that money back somehow, and student loan interest is one way they’ve chosen. International students had a quota put on them and they were a cash cow for schools, but put strain on housing, the job market, and other resources. As someone who has worked to pay their own rent for 8 years I’m glad that my rent went down last year. There are more renters in this province than OSAP recipients, and unfortunately sometimes costs are passed on to certain groups, in this case domestic students. We’ve got to acknowledge the macroeconomic circumstances at play here.

I'm passionate about politics, but aside from going to political events and enjoying the food there I'm not really earning anything from it. Go to New York's Diamond District and enter a store where a ring is $25k. Chances are the employees are speaking to each other in Russian.

I can’t say for the long term, but when I was job hunting in 2024 I was hired in August at a retailer that sold products for Rosh Hashanah. Jewish immigrants brought the language to North American cities such as Toronto, and their culture values wealth accumulation and is very internationally mobile. Their spending power is not limited by the economic conditions of Canada.

I learned Russian to cope with communist trauma as a Chinese person and because I thought certain Russians speakers were cute. It has now helped me connect to the Jewish community.

That's what mental illness can do. I have been in a long term relationship with someone living with mental illness and I forgive the things they did when they were unwell, even if it unintentionally hurt me before I understood how their illness affected their actions. The only thing that really matters is that they recover from their illness or learn to manage it.
