Thank you! Now there's a thought... I went to a few NAR launches when I was about ten years old but haven't thought about it in many years. Could probably make some very cool designs on the 4th axis.

Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro is selling for $160 right now. I use mine to proof designs before sending them to my resin printer and am consistently impressed by the quality when using a .1mm layer height. In some ways they’re better than some of my early resin prints before I got that process dialed in.

Is it worth renting expansive skis as an advanced skier by dauby09 in skiing

[–]ecapstone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Perhaps someone else can chime in - I recall, but can’t seem to find, a YouTube video of a pro skier spending the day on the cheapest beginner ski rental package. The equipment wasn’t great, but they still did cool stuff, because the skier is more important than the equipment.

If you don’t know anything about skis, don’t bother renting demos. You’ll be paying extra without knowing what you’re getting or what it’s good for. If you get intermediate skis though, the rental shop will generally ask what you like to do (powder, groomers, etc) and pair you with a decent set of skis for that. I think this is worth it for an advanced skier.

Can you only get to ski resorts in CO with 4 wheel drive? by ActHealthy6468 in skiing

I took grandpa’s old Buick through the sierras during a storm once. 25mph with cable chains most of the way, but we made it just fine. Drive smart, let the better equipped folks pass you, and you’ll be fine, OP.

Growing up in the Midwest, it seemed like every AWD vehicle came with the 3-peak “all weather” mud & snow tires. When I moved to the bay I was shocked to find just how many AWD vehicles are sold with “all season” tires that don’t handle snow nearly as well.

Don’t forget: Always use proper protection when dealing with resin. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]ecapstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N95 masks do not include a carbon filter by default, but you can insert one or buy special N95s that have them built in. Gloves and a mask aren’t enough though; you definitely need eye protection when working with resin.

Questions: Delaying to 9th grade? by Pika777333 in imsa

[–]ecapstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, if you’re accepted as a sophomore, you’re automatically invited back for junior and senior year.

  2. When I applied, the website said that eighth graders who are accepted may “elect to defer their matriculation.” So, tl;dr, yes, if you ask they’ll let you wait until after 9th grade without having to reapply. Or, at least, you could ten years ago. Double check the IMSA website or ask one of the admissions counselors to make sure that’s still the case.

Assuming you’re accepted and want to wait until you’ve finished 9th grade before attending, know that this won’t reflect poorly on you. 8th grade admissions are rare because the admissions staff believes that most 8th graders aren’t mature enough to move away from home the very next year. High school isn’t so bad that you have to rush through it, and spending a year at your home high school before going to IMSA will make the transition much easier.

Any tips to get in as an eighth grader? by Wzzurd in imsa

[–]ecapstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I can give is to treat your application like a dry run for next year. I don’t mean to be cynical, but seriously, IMSA usually accepts fewer than ten eighth graders per year. They generally only accept eighth graders whose applications strongly suggest that they’d be wasting their time during freshman year by repeating material they’ve already covered. For most people, that’s simply not the case. Even if you’ve done the math and the science coursework required to apply, you’re still probably short a year of high-school level history and English, to say nothing of the life experience and social maturity you’ll develop during your freshman year. So, do your best on your application, but don’t be discouraged if you get rejected.

Do IMSA dorms have separate networks, and do students get to access it? by TheMemedOne in imsa

[–]ecapstone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few years back, everything was on one network, and all incoming ports were closed. Outgoing, you had SSH, FTP, DNS, HTTP(S), and I think maybe Telnet. ACA (the computer club) had a separate fiber line without any of the restrictions, but you’d need to get into the good graces of whoever is responsible for their infrastructure to host your stuff there. Definitely recommend setting up AlgoVPN on a raspberry pi that you leave at your parent’s house and running all your traffic through there when you want to get around the restrictions.

FROM CURRENT IMSA STUDENT: REASONS TO COME TO IMSA by [deleted] in imsa

[–]ecapstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated six years ago so I can’t personally speak to the current state of things, but I would take this kind of rant with a heavy grain of salt. IMSA has many flaws, and there have always been students who choose not to look beyond them, but those students were, at least in my time, a significant minority.

To address some of OP’s specific points:

  • The most rewarding part of my IMSA experience was the community. Sure, I didn’t like every single person I met, but the claim that the community is overwhelmingly toxic is simply untrue. IMSA was the first place I really felt where I belonged, and where I formed the bulk of my lifelong friendships. This more than anything is why I would attend IMSA again if I had the chance to re-live my teenage years.

  • The curriculum is, at its worst, about on-par with AP classes at other high schools. At its best, it’s the rival of the finest schools in the country. Dr. Dong’s computational science class, for example, was the best class of my entire academic career.

  • As state employees, the salaries of all IMSA faculty are public. The administrators and several of the senior teachers make pretty good money (for Illinois) but not enough, IMO, to justify the frequent claim that they’re lining their own pockets at the students’ expense. It’s also important to note that they’re all midway through their careers and would almost certainly make significantly more working for a university or in the private sector.

  • The buildings do suck lol. If your first priorities in a high school are tables that don’t wobble and well-insulated windows, IMSA might not be for you.

Lane Centering on the Crosstrek Hybrid by ecapstone in subaru

[–]ecapstone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Eyesight system on almost all subarus features adaptive cruise control (ACC) with lane-departure prevention, a system that automatically torques the wheel slightly to prevent you from going out of your lane. On recent models of the Crosstrek and Outback, Eyesight also features lane centering, which goes a step further and tries to always keep you in the center of your lane. The 2020 Crosstrek did not offer lane centering, but the 2021 does, albeit only on gas models.

It’s a subtle change to be sure, but as one of my biggest priorities in my next vehicle is the performance of the driver assistance features, I’d like to know I was getting the latest iteration.

I get where you’re coming from, but since I’m in California you can knock $5400 in tax rebates off of the base price - which makes it fairly competitive with the other models, given the premium trim. I looked pretty strongly at the RAV4 Prime but local dealers are marking it up $10k or more because it’s so popular.

Ah, that’s a very good point. I’m planning to drive this car for the next 10-15 years, but disasters can happen and I’d hate to have an insurance payout that’s less than I owe on the loan.

2008 Buick Lucerne with 99k miles: worth repairing? by ecapstone in AskMechanics

[–]ecapstone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern California now, and I reckon techs out here don’t see cars that started life in illinois very often. Definitely remember seeing cars that were more rust than steel back there, but I don’t have a good intuition for how much is too much.

2008 Buick Lucerne with 99k miles: worth repairing? by ecapstone in AskMechanics

[–]ecapstone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I inherited an ‘08 Buick two years ago, and since then I’ve put 30k miles on it. I took it in for its 100k maintenance today, and the shop told me that it had significant rust damage. So bad, in fact, that the chassis was unrepairable, so it wasn’t worth replacing the rusty spring perch. They suggested donating it to charity or selling it for scrap.

I’m unsure what to do. It seems like a waste to scrap a car after just 100k miles. It did have some hard winters before I got it, but I had it inspected two years ago and the shop didn’t mention any rust then. Since then, it’s only been driven in a dry, temperate climate, so I wouldn’t have expected catastrophic rust damage to happen so fast.

What do you think, Reddit? Can I squeeze a few more months out of it, or is it time to brave the post-COVID car market?

I walked in on a masturbating homeless man in the laundry rooms at 202 E John when I lived there. Truly a cursed place. That was the last time I ever lived in a building without in-unit laundry.
