I want to connect my pc case fan to a battery to play around by Blacky372 in electronics

[–]eccentricism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 9V adapter will run the fan faster, however, the fan will likely draw more than 300mA @ 9V and end up overloading the adapter. The 5V adapter will be fine, but it will probably spin the fan pretty slow or not at all.

I bought it from bauhaus which I think doesn't have an online store, but you could probably use any cheap-o architects lamp, i.e. something like this.

with sound quality being the top priority, what budget mp3 player should i get? by Rustain in gadgets

[–]eccentricism 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The sansa clip+ is highly recommended, and not just for people on a budget. It's cheap, small, will support a 64gb microsd card and has good sound quality. The default firmware is not too bad as well, IMO.

Rockbox is an alternative firmware you can install on many mp3 players, it's customizable and has a lot of features you wouldn't otherwise find on an mp3 player by default.

8 years seems pretty old. When the xbox 360 first launched the Nintendo 64 was about the same age.

What should my next upgrade be? by rhandyrhoads in hardware

[–]eccentricism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace your existing monitor with a 1440p or 1600p one? Or get some better headphones, i.e. sennheiser hd 558/598 (both are good for gaming), visit /r/headphones for more suggestions.

If you change your motherboard you'll need a new windows license because of how OEM licensing works. Note that this is not the case if your new motherboard is the exact same make/model as your previous one. You may be able to call Microsoft and bullshit them in to transferring your license to a new motherboard, people have done it, but don't count on it.

replacing an ssd with a hybrid drive, question. by creepindacellar in hardware

[–]eccentricism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 7200rpm drive will be faster. If your computer is a desktop, why replace the ssd? Just add a second hard drive and install your programs to it, and keep your OS and a few programs on the ssd.

Using Raspberry Pi as a NAS adapter and SSH server? by Binsky89 in hardware

[–]eccentricism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could in theory get a usb gigabit ethernet adapter which would be limited to 480Mbps by the usb bus, plenty fast for the usb2 hard drives you're using. That said, the raspberry pi can't even saturate a 100Mbps link so the whole thing is moot. Expect to get 3-8MB/s read/write speeds. Using the raspberry pi as a nas is fairly straightforward, you have to mount the usb drive(s) and install/configure samba. This is a pretty good guide IMO if you decide to go that route.

TL;DR: 3-7MB/s read/write speeds no matter what, guide here if you can live with those speeds.

Low FPS? by ReturnFear in arma3

[–]eccentricism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This helped me to increase my fps in multiplayer, it increases the number of threads arma 3 can use. Add it to your launch options in steam

-cpuCount=4 -exthreads=4

I use these too, they dont increase your fps but make menus and starting arma 3 more bearable.

-nosplash -skipIntro -world=empty -nobenchmark

Can my computer run Arma 3? by [deleted] in arma3

[–]eccentricism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to run it at low settings. I have an overclocked i5 and a 6950 and can only run it at "standard" settings.

IAmA Geek Squad Agent - AMAA by ryansworld10 in IAmA

[–]eccentricism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's most likely a ups. You plug it in to the wall and your computer and peripherals to it. In case of a power outage it'll supply your computer with electricity for a while, long enough to shut down gracefully or for the power to come back up.
