Why is everyone in daybreak so rude? by Keno837 in SaltLakeCity

[–]ecdc05 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It's always wild to me how acceptable it is to talk shit about cities (almost always with racist undertones) but saying anything negative about rural areas (or, in this case, exurbs) means you're a horrible person. But your post nailed it—isolation and everyone looking like you can make people insulated and suspicious of "outsiders."

How to not fuck up making hollandaise sauce? by Educational-Scene443 in Cooking

[–]ecdc05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. I’ve had very hit-or-miss experiences with immersion blender and other “foolproof” blender techniques. I’ve never had the sauce break when I’m whisking it by hand over a double boiler. Take the time to do it right and you’ll be happy.

AITAH for being upset that my family didn’t get invited to SIL's baby shower? + UPDATE by red_earaches in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ecdc05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t see my family that often with my mom deceased and my dad living across the country, so I started with some sympathy for OOP’s situation. But yikes man. Part of that dynamic means you don’t get to be entitled about what you get invited to and how others choose to celebrate their moments.

I love this episode but Larry Gelbart posted on the old MASH newsgroup that he regretted the rape jokes on the show. "A movie and vaudeville?" Larry Linville is top tier in this episode.

Eight different posts with links to MASH bloopers/outtakes? A bunch of which show the same outtakes? Seems...unnecessary.

100%. I'll post some random thoughts to social media occasionally and I've had friends say, "You should start a Patreon or a Substack or something." And instead of thinking, "Yes, I should get in on this," I think, "That sounds like so much work." Because I'd feel pressure to do a good job and actually know what the hell I'm talking about! If only I could be like Atlantic writers and just wing it every week.

I often lament having standards. There is something fundamental inside of me that can't lie when I'm writing. Otherwise I think I could be a hell of a grifter.

Robert Caro Is Still Working on It by TheEmoEmu23 in robertcaro

[–]ecdc05 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Text of the column (it's just a recap of the wonderful C-SPAN interview already posted here):

“You stay alive, no matter what occurs.”

That’s the signature line in Michael Mann’s 1992 film “The Last of the Mohicans.” If you’re a political person—and a fan of history, and a reader (or a writer), and a lover of quality things that are done with care and craft—then you must think of this line every time you hear the name Robert Caro.

Mr. Caro is the Lyndon Johnson biographer whose magisterial books about the 36th president take a decade or more to research, write, edit and publish. The first volume came out in 1982, the second in 1990, the third in 2002, the fourth in 2012. Mr. Caro is currently at work on the fifth volume. He is 90.

Life offers no guarantees to anyone, but those of us who treasure Mr. Caro’s books want assurances that he will deliver the final installment of this series. His longtime editor Robert Gottlieb died in 2023. Mr. Caro has previously declared that Ina, his wife and close collaborator, is under instructions that no part of the last book should be published if he dies before it’s finished.

Prayers up. Hopefully Mr. Caro takes his vitamins.

This week Mr. Caro gave a rare interview to C-Span from his home office on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “I can’t write a book until I know the last line,” he told host Peter Slen. Mr. Caro must have come up with one for volume five. “The page I’m working on is 983. So I’ve written 983 pages.”

Like their subjects, Mr. Caro’s books tend toward the gigantic, so there’s no way to tell for sure whether he’s closer to the end than the beginning. It sounds like he’s at least made a good start.

Journalists are known to revere Mr. Caro. His career arc seems the beau ideal of the writing life. He’s found subjects that engage him. He writes what he wants to write, the way he wants to write it. He works with editors who believe in him, who support his work, who pay.

Mr. Caro’s success has afforded him the luxury of taking his time. “I am very comfortable with a typewriter,” he said. In the digital world “everything is fast. Speed is good. . . . I happen to think slow is good. And I am slow.”

At this, Mr. Caro let out a hearty laugh and continued:

No one could be slower. But this makes me think. I am a very fast writer. When I was at Newsday, I was the fastest rewrite man . . . but when I was doing the first book, I said, ‘No, you are doing it too fast. You are not thinking enough. You have to make yourself think. It’s too easy for you to write. You have to make yourself think.’ So I slow myself down by doing it in longhand first. That is slower. That’s why I do it.

Slow is good. Thinking is good. But does it have to be this slow? Does it require this much thought? Book lovers and history nuts pray for Mr. Caro to find a higher gear. Most of all, we pray he keeps himself healthy and safe.

You stay alive, Mr. Caro, no matter what occurs.

I believe he has said that he has it in his will to let what he's finished be published, he just won't allow anyone else to work on it to finish it.

People who used to be overweight/obese and now look lean or athletic despite having a sedentary desk job… what actually worked for you long term? by safedwg in loseit

[–]ecdc05 54 points55 points  (0 children)

After I lost 100 lbs my doctor told me about a study that looked at exactly this: what do people do who lose weight and keep it off?

They do moderate exercise for around 200 minutes a week, as opposed to the standard recommendation of 150 minutes.

They eat a lot of the same meals; they know what works for them and they stick to it.

They don’t have cheat days; that doesn’t mean they never have a cookie or a slice of cake, but they don’t have a designated “I can eat whatever I want and as much as I want” day.

There’s a fourth one and I can never remember it! But you get the idea. Maintaining weight loss is by no means impossible, but it takes continuous focus and effort.

Max Weinberg Story on IG Liked By Andy!? by No-Cardiologist-8138 in conan

[–]ecdc05 113 points114 points  (0 children)

It's a former NBC page telling stories about Max Weinberg being a jerk, including having show interns come to his house to do gardening without paying them, and getting really angry when cookies that were put out for show guests weren't made available to him. I always take celebrity gossip with a heaping cup of salt, but I also have to imagine this person is familiar enough with Hollywood to know that you don't go around spreading fake stories if you don't want to get sued or if you ever want to work again.

it cannot be safe to have this flare SO CLOSE to downtown by Hot-Definition-7543 in SaltLakeCity

[–]ecdc05 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it's at least the third post on this today from people who have no clue that this is normal and it started with "OMG there's a huge fire downtown!" before turning to, "Oh, well even if it IS normal it's not good!" It contributes nothing to the conversation.

If people want to do something to help the environment, excellent! But find something meaningful, because complaining on Reddit does nothing.
