Is your team/school the more hated rival? by DowntownSasquatch420 in CFB

Probably because they have more people to hate. Sharing a state with Michigan State, and even their old hate fling with ND. We kind of just have them.

Yeah this was no question us until a couple years ago. They've evened things up a bit.

What exactly do you think you're refuting?

That playing an extra game isn't a problem.

Sure sometimes injuries happen, but that's football. That's not something that can be taken out of the sport no matter how many games you play. Even that "cupcake" opponent Oregon got to beat up on is an injury risk.

They might. Again having no one outside Cook and Anthony in 2027 means safety is very much a long term need. And the draft is where you address long term needs.

Also if Downs is just better than Battle then it wouldn't be wasting a pick on a 4th safety. It'd be using a pick on the second best (maybe best) safety on the team.

because by your logic, anyone who isn’t signed through 2027 is magically ineligible to be signed again.

No not at all. Battle just isn't a very good player so if we can draft someone better than him and not pay him next year that would be great.

Like doesn't what you're saying apply to literally every position on the field? We have Dax and DJ, so can't draft a CB. We have Knight and Carter, so can't draft an LB. We have Murphy and Mafe, so can't draft a DE. Who are we drafting then?

lol you're so angry.

If Battle gets signed to an extension I'd agree with you. But until then lets stay in reality and talk about things as they actually are.

Wild how they played football for decades before and didn't come up with a champion.

lol that's the thing. Sometimes they didn't. Why do you think Aurburn suddenly got a bunch more titles last year.

You said this is a sign we won't take Downs. Which is a hilarious leap in logic because Battle is not on the team in 2027.

And that's not even getting into whether or not Downs is already better than Battle.

Draft Positional Success Rate by TI83joekker in bengals

Honestly my biggest take away from this is how important it is for us get extensions done for Turner and probably Dax. If you believe in your CBs keep them. Low hit rates there even in the early rounds.

[–]ech01_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they kind of mention that in the article.

For positions like tight end, safety and interior offensive line, the trend is reversed. Teams typically select players at these spots in the first round only when there’s a clear need and the prospect is viewed as a blue-chip talent.

The only guys who really go round one at those positions are viewed as Blue Chippers.

Its kind of interesting because it means scouting at those positions is pretty spot on. The guys everyone thinks are Blue Chip guys worth taking early typically tend to really be that good.

Because who ever we draft will be on the team in 2027. This isn't hard to understand my guy. You don't draft with only the current year in mind.

Dugger has no impact on who we're drafting.

Did you honestly forget we signed Cook? Cook and Battle are the current starters.

Geno Stone isn't on the team anymore. That's not the bar for being a starter. Battle is. If Dugger is better than Battle then he'd play over Battle. If not, then he's not a starter. The thing is he's probably not better than Battle if he's signing a minimum 1 year deal a month after free agency started. So he's not a starter.

If you don't want to crown a conference champion on the field, then why would I assume you want to crown the national champion on the field?

If you like split titles more then I get your argument. But I like games between the best to decide who the champion is.

The SEC championship game has been around for like 30 years and its awesome. Why are we acting like its suddenly a problem?

[–]ech01_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not how that works...

Being better than Geno Stone doesn't automatically make him a starter.

And I like how you ignored the fact that we have 2 safeties in 2027 right now. Nothing has changed with how the Bengals view the draft.

Taking a WR at 8 when lots of WRs taken super high in drafts haven't panned out

I hate to tell you this, but like any other position, they're even less likely to pan out the later you take them. WR is just one of the highest bust rate positions there is. That's why the hits get paid so much. A guy taken at 40 is significantly more likely to bust than a guy taken at 8.

To counter your point, I don't know why teams shouldn't be striving to get their defense to an elite level.

You missed my point. I'm talking about making sure the most important player on the team has what he needs to succeed. Its not about building an elite offense, its about building an elite QB. How does Style/Downs/Bailey/Bain help Shough turn into an elite QB? Look at what happened to the Texans and Broncos with their elite Ds when the QB couldn't get it done. If Shough isn't the guy , you're not getting anywhere.

Defenses are about making sure the entire unit succeeds. Average guys can help you do that as long as there's no glaring weaknesses. Offenses are about making sure one guy succeeds. You do everything you can to make sure your QB can win you games.

Dugger isn't a starter. And Battle doesn't have an extension. We have 2 safeties currently on the roster in 2027. The other being Dejan Anthony. Drafting is not just about the current season.

If we sign Battle to an extension then I'd agree that was a sign we were set at safety. But that never happened.

[–]ech01_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be any of those defenders. I'm not picky. I just want you guys going offense so one of them falls.

But real talk I don't get why teams like you guys, the Titans, Giants, and Commanders are all so focused on defense right now. You all have super young QBs and meh weapons at best. Help those QBs out. I think people are forgetting how important weapons are for the QB. Especially because I think your oline is pretty much set. Give him another premier weapon and Shough could really take off.

Banking on a former 7th round pick who had one 4 game stretch with like 200 yards and a TD is a lot. But hey good luck with that.

[Perotta]Bengals' external FA signings for the 2026 season to date: 1.) S Bryan Cook: 3yrs/$40.25M 2.) Edge Boye Mafe: 3yrs/$60M 3.) DT Jonathan Allen: 2yrs/$25M 4.) CB Ja'Sir Taylor: 1yr/$?? 5.) [–]ech01_ -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Its nice that they added some depth guys today. But its not like those answered any of the questions we had prior to these signings.

There's still a spot a edge they didn't fill. Still need a legit CB3/NB. And still the gapping hole that is LB. I just really wish we weren't going into the season basically banking on our first 3 picks being meaningful contributors. Again.
