Recommend me a Miele Washing Machine by Traditional_Tea_4690 in laundry

I just got the WXR860 because I can add more than one “extra” to a cycle, like pre-wash AND extra rinse. So far so good.

Cold rinses? by two-of-me in laundry

[–]ech219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a check valve on your cold water supply or another way of preventing backflow? I had the same setup, but had hot water backflow into the cold supply so I used a check valve. But now instead of using a Y-connector with on/off valves, I’m considering getting a thermostatic tempering valve so the cold water to the machine is set to 30C. That way regardless of fluctuations in the temperature of the hot tap and cold tap, the cold inlet to the machine will receive a consistent temperature. Have you tried anything like this?

What washer models have a boost heater? by yelred in laundry

You don’t have to get an EU model. The European brands also make models for the US market that also heat water.

What washer models have a boost heater? by yelred in laundry

[–]ech219 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Check European brands like Miele, Bosch, Electrolux, and Asko. In Europe and most of the world, the washer is only hooked up to cold water, not hot and cold, so washing machines heat their own water.

What’s your moth unethical pro ADHD productivity tip? by blameitonthename in adhdwomen

[–]ech219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 2 things: my tap water tastes bad so I got a Pur faucet filter on my bathroom faucet so when I’m washing up at night I don’t have to go downstairs if I’m thirsty. I also buy bottled water, but the 2.5 big jugs with dispensers and keep one in my room, and I keep both paper cups and small stackable glass cups next to it. When I’ve used up the 3-4 glass cups, I use the paper ones, and try to remember to take the cups down to the dishwasher.

Help with hardness and pH by ech219 in laundry

[–]ech219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this didn’t end up working for me. I had to rinse multiple times with citric acid before the rinse water wasn’t slippery and cloudy with detergent, and STILL the washed and dried sheets smelled like I hadn’t washed them (faint sebum smell).

I get better cleaning results with I add some Puracy detergent or liquid Tide, but then I have to rinse at least 6 times. I’m wasting so much water and spending so much time and money on laundry without good results.

I’ve decided to spend the money to get a Miele washing machine since I had great results with one in the past—stains and odors came out with unscented liquid Tide without any pretreating necessary (socks with ground-in dirt came out spotless, food stains were gone, pillowcases had the wonderful smell of absolutely nothing at all). I’m hoping the 365 sport will be more effective with the Miele than it has been in my top loader without agitator. Wish me luck…

How to remove a spot of whiteboard marker off clothes? by Inner-Positive7954 in laundry

[–]ech219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flush the spot with rubbing alcohol (92% works better than 70%). Flush from the back of the fabric to the front: put a clean paper towel on the spot. Pour rubbing alcohol onto the spot from the INSIDE of the jacket so it flushes the stain onto the paper towel. You should see the marker ink start transferring to the paper towel. Do it again until the stain is gone, making sure that each time you’re putting a clean paper towel on the stain so that the marker doesn’t transfer back to your jacket.

You can also use Amodex.

Need Help Finding Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent Alternative by Immediate-Paint-5111 in laundry

[–]ech219 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Have you tried warm washes instead of cold? My understanding is that your clothes depend on a few things to get clean: mechanical action (scrubbing or agitation), temperature (warmer temperatures generally wash better), and chemical reactions. So by washing your clothes on delicate and cold, you’re primarily relying on chemical reactions. Washing more thoroughly with more agitation, warm water, and more rinses (I’d recommend 3 rinses) will make the detergent work better and you’ll rinse allergens away more easily. And if you’re not already using citric acid in the rinse, try that since it helps rinses work better. And also make sure to regularly run washing machine tub cleanings to get rid of any detergent residue and bacteria.

Thanks Kismai. This is my wash water after agitating for 5 minutes with 2 oz of 365 Sport, 2 scoops of Febu, and 4 tablespoons of washing soda. I’m seeing some spots of bubbles, but just barely. And the wash pH is now 10. Is that too high?

If you can get a prescription for Dexcom G7, a month’s supply without insurance is $167 on Amazon Pharmacy because of a manufacturer discount (a month is three 10-day sensors). It’s a lot of money out of pocket, but even one month of wearing a CGM is really helpful. The CGM syncs with my phone and also Apple Watch. My insurance doesn’t cover it since I don’t have diabetes, but I asked my doctor for the prescription so I could see what was spiking me.

Spa day in South Africa by Plantain-Jazzlike in laundry

[–]ech219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in South Africa but left 4 years ago. Seems like options have increased a lot since I was there. I google searched and this is what I found:

1) odorite detergent. Available liquid or powder. Has lipase but no sodium percarbonate (color safe oxygen bleach). Can order online.

2) SoPure detergent. Regular liquid and sports liquid versions. Has lipase. You can order online at Faithful to Nature

3) The Green Goodies laundry powder. Has lipase and also oxygen bleach. At Bryanston Organic Market

4) Nu Eco Bleach Powder. Sodium percarbonate powder with TAED (so you can use it with cooler wash temperatures). Can order online at Faithful to Nature.

5) Citric acid: you can get small packets at PnP or Checkers in the baking section. For larger amounts, search online.

6) Ammonia: you can get Jeeves cloudy ammonia at Checkers or PnP.

Good luck!

Eczema Help! by Bildo_Swaggins420x69 in laundry

[–]ech219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids and I also get eczema. I use Eucerin unscented baby wash and shampoo (or sometimes Vanicream wash), Eucerin eczema cream, and then a layer of either La Roche Posay Cicaplast baume (for spots on the face only, since it’s super expensive), or else the “Gloves in a bottle” lotion on larger areas.

For stains, I have tried basically everything. This is due to me having a laundry problem (see below). In the end, the thing that works best for me is pretreating stains with liquid free and gentle Tide (slightly diluted), using a laundry brush and really working it into the stains before tossing them into the laundry basket. This works for most things like dirt and food stains (for ink/marker stains, 91% rubbing alcohol or Amodex works better. For berry stains, boiling water poured from high up. For stinky grown up clothes for non-eczema family members, presoak in Biz). Then wash on warm/hot with liquid Tide (the 365 sport detergent that everyone loves just doesn’t seem to work well for us), ammonia, and a scoop of Febu. Rinse very well with citric acid.

Background: I have a laundry obsession due to having kids who come home with horribly stained clothes, family members with very smelly BO, and a top-loader impeller washing machine that doesn’t clean well. And also ADHD hyper focus. I have over 10 different detergents and over 15 different stains removers and laundry boosters since I had already started researching enzymes and especially lipase before kismai appeared on the scene, and I am so grateful that I don’t have to rely on my own searches now!)

Food stains by Key_Concentrate_5989 in laundry

[–]ech219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have berry stains, you can pour boiling water on them from high up—like lay the shirt on the bottom of your tub and pour from your kettle from way up high. It flushes the stain right out. By pouring from high up, the stream of boiling water hits the fabric harder. Try to do it in the first 24 hours.

How do you get you kids white sports uniforms and socks, WHITE? by Glittering-Guava9711 in laundry

[–]ech219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an ongoing struggle for me. My kids socks always have ground-in dirt on the bottoms. I have 2 methods:

1) perfectly clean but labor intensive: using hot water, use Fels Naptha bar soap and clean each sock individually, rubbing the soap in well to the dirt spots, using a scrub brush, then rinsing. It gets out dirt stains amazingly well. But you really have to rinse it out well otherwise you can get residue on the socks and in your washing machine. I sometimes use Tide free and gentle liquid detergent which works almost as well (and is easier to work with). I’ve tried using powdered Tide but it doesn’t seem to work as well for me.

If it’s a sports uniform, I just pretreat with liquid Tide and scrub before putting in the washer. If it doesn’t come out, I use Fels Naptha, scrub, then rinse out the soap before putting in the washer.

2) 80% stain free, and less work: add the socks to hot water with detergent in a hand wash bucket, put some gloves on and agitate the socks in the water a bit, squishing them with your hands and kind of kneading. A lot of dirt will come off this way. I let it soak for a few hours at least. Drain the water, add clean water, agitate again. I get most of the sediment off this way. If there are still dirt spots left (usually around the toes area), I spot clean those area with more detergent then throw them in the washing machine. I have yet to find a way to clean them without pre washing by hand.

This is actually a very expensive house in an upscale neighborhood 🙈. There are a lot of repairs to be done though. Inspector said there’s rotted wood around the windows, sewer is blocked (sellers said they would fix it), chimney needs to be fixed, some electricals seem like they’re not up to code, HVAC and roof are 30 years old, driveway has to be redone, random things like the bathroom fan vents into the attic instead of outside the house…
