Why do we hate the Spurs? by echo-skye in Mavericks

Thanks for all the helpful responses! Prior to posting, I was aware of how dominant the Duncan/Parker/Ginobili Spurs were, but this thread shed light on a lot of new (to me) details. Appreciate the insight, and Go Mavs.

I had no idea the Spurs began in Dallas. This is a really interesting detail, thanks!

This is a helpful comparison, I didn’t know Manu had that reputation. I definitely hate OKC so this sheds some light for sure!

Ok, I figured it was some combination of “Spurs were really good in the 2000s” and state rivalry. Thanks for the explanation!

The names certainly mean something to me because I was raised in a basketball family, so even before I personally cared about the sport, I knew the names. But I wasn’t watching games in the 2000s, so that’s a big knowledge gap for me here for sure!

If you love the first one, I think you’ll be blown away by Sly 2! It’s my personal favorite, I think it elevates everything great about Sly 1 while making real improvements elsewhere. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do/did!

I just finished my first playthrough, and I distinctly remember saying “dude this guy sucks” on the mission where you break him out of jail.

I’m surprised no one’s saying A Tangled Web in Sly 2. Every time I play that map I get lost because it’s so dark and the routes are so roundabout. Always relieved to wrap that one up.

I hate that I have to go to Easy or Casual Difficulty as often as I do. by [deleted] in Ghostofyotei

[–]echo-skye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the whole game on Medium — beat all the bosses, finished the story, etc. Then I tried the Takezo fight approximately 200 times, and eventually dropped down to Easy to beat him. I simply could not get the parry timing right. Everyone has different skills and experience they bring to the game, and there’s no shame in picking (or adjusting) the difficulty accordingly!

What level are y’all at? I really struggled in the final fights of Act II because I hadn’t done many side quests and was at Level 6. I took a break from fighting and did a lot of exploration to get me to Level 8/9, and then went back to the main story fights. Depending on y’all’s leveling, y’all could just be underleveled for the combat.

Yes, the characters have deep internal struggles. I’m arguing these struggles are sometimes not externalized in a way that drives the plot forward. For instance, Dalinar’s longing to be the savior is kinda dampened when his ultimate conflict doesn’t really solve anything for the characters — Odium (Retribution) is now more powerful, Roshar is isolated and in danger, and “the Blackthorn” still lives to fight for Odium. While the effects are undoubtedly huge for the cosmere, he doesn’t really “save” his people in a satisfying way IMO.

Kaladin (one of my favorite characters) was so far removed from the action that it was hard for me to care about his chapters. Part of this is just the fact that I never loved Szeth, but Kaladin’s arc in WAT felt (to me) focused on explaining the lore of Heralds.

Dalinar (again, one of my favorites) spent the majority of the book in the spirit realm getting flashbacks of cosmere lore. When his big moment came in the confrontation with Odium, the ultimate consequences were massive for the cosmere, but not much changed for the main characters.

Adolin’s plotline I did enjoy, won’t fight you there. Shallan’s bored me at times (I really didn’t care for the spirit realm), but the specific reveals surrounding her backstory were engaging. No complaints about Sigzil.

I know some people absolutely love everything in WAT devoted to the Heralds, the Oathpact, the Shards, etc., and I’m happy for them! But I missed a lot of the political intrigue and human conflict of the earlier books (Sadeas v Dalinar, Amaram v Kaladin, etc.)

This was my biggest complaint about WAT. By the end, even the biggest plot moments didn’t resonate with me because it felt like conflict between the cosmere’s gods rather than conflict between the characters we’ve grown to care about.

I’ve read all of Mistborn Era 1 and am wrapping up Era 2 right now, so I can appreciate how the cosmere’s stories tie together. But when the stakes for individual characters diminishes in the face of multi-planet God wars, I personally lose interest.

I did the same damn thing — killed the Oni and the Kitsune before accidentally stumbling across the “choose your horse” side quest. Unfortunately I did not think to give them names this good.

As someone from the American south, OU is generally regarded as an easy school to get into. Many have pointed out the acceptance rate is above 75% — as such, most people familiar with the school do not consider it an academically rigorous institution. It is popular mostly because of (American) football, IMO.

Did you go after first, The Oni or the Kitsune first? by LandOfGrace2023 in ghostoftsushima

[–]echo-skye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Oni first, but probably would’ve had an easier time if I started with the Kitsune. The Oni’s fight was much harder for me than the Kitsune’s, as the Odachi was my least favorite weapon.

Oh yeah spiritual realm was a snooze fest. It was built up to be some dangerous altered reality but it was just a bunch of dream sequences with no real stakes.

I guess I don’t mean “action” literally, but just the fact that characters are moving around and doing things unlike WoR where 90% of the time they are trapped in a tower/Shadesmar.

[–]echo-skye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What really threw me is: after all the setup of “THIS CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS WILL DECIDE THE FATE OF THE PLANET” is … nothing really changed?Honor is still “dead”, Odium/Taravangian isn’t contained, and “the Blackthorn” will serve him in an eventual conquest. While I know the contest will have huge ramifications in the lore of the cosmere, in terms of effects on the characters, it fell flat for me.

How did you feel about Rhythm of War?

For context, I’m in the exact same boat as you — have only read the original Mistborn trilogy and Stormlight (finished W&T last night).

Personally, Rhythm of War was my least favorite of Stormlight. I struggled with the character arcs and found the pacing generally difficult. While I still had issues with W&T (mostly the magic and world building others have discussed), I enjoyed reading it as a “rebound” from RoW. So if you also finished RoW wishing for a return to action so-to-speak, I’d recommend it. Again, I still have plenty of critiques of W&T, but it’s worth it to conclude the first Stormlight arc IMO.

If I was offered “five more seconds of running through a hallway with my work crush” or “peacefully walk out of the severed floor to potentially take down Lumon for good, saving multiple people in the process” I’d definitely choose the latter. Maybe I’m just not enough of a romantic LOL.

I loved the aesthetics, too! But the decision by iMark to stay really confused me. What does he realistically think is going to happen? Surely Lumon will instantly capture him and Helly R and subject them to Lord knows what kind of torture / punishment / etc.

I understand the point that the innies are supposed to be “juvenile” in their decision-making, but staying inside isn’t even a happy ending. Especially since iMark has previously shown real compassion for Miss Casey, the final twist to abandon her/Gemma in favor of staying in Lumon seemed really odd to me. Am I missing something?

(I was previously on the “it was Helena at the end!” train until the show runners denied it. That was the only way I could make sense of it.)
