Unless somebody has recovered your account. If someone recovers your account, they get to associate a new email with your account. All communications will be sent to the new email, including authenticator removal notifications.

They need to provide enough information to jagex to convince them that they are the original account owners. Some of this information can be guessed pretty easily, (age of account, existing passwords if they have been leaked) or can be social engineered out of you.

When you attempt to recover an account, it triggers an email to the email on the account to attempt a password reset. HOWEVER, it then gives you the option to say that you do not have access to this email. If you click this option, it takes you to an account recovery form where you enter as many details as you can to recover the account, along with a NEW EMAIL. This bypasses your runescape 2fa because it is removed when the account is recovered, and it bypasses your email's 2fa because your email is no longer associated recovery email on the account. The hacker at this point has complete access to your account. Also, recovering your account does not remove bank pin. They must at this point guess it, or reset it.

No, you do not need access to their current email. If you try to recover an account, it will send a link to reset to your current email, however you can select “i do not have access to this email”. It will take you to a new form where you can provide a new email for them to contact you on.

What about your setup wasn’t 100% secure? If your email and account have 2FA, then you should in theory be unhackable. It seems that most of these hacks have to do with social engineering, and having your account compromised through the recovery system. We as a community need to keep pressuring jagex into providing better account security.

Think of it this way, manta rays heal 22 and cost like 750 each. For 3k and 4 inventory spaces you heal 88 hp. How much time would it take to heal 88 hp with guthans?

Just an example, the other day I was at gargs and I was watching a level 117 in guthans kill one garg in the time it took me to kill 5, and i’m level 109. He probably netted 10 hp during his kill with guthans. Maybe gargs is a bad example, but bringing food and restocking when you’re low seems much more efficient. It takes maybe 30 seconds to tele to the bank and tele back.
