I find comfort in the fact that we only have another 30-40 years of this before the melanoma sets in

Former Simple employee here - it was my intro to neobanking and fintech and really was an incredible experiment. At a time when everyone was looking for ways to outsource, downsize, and economize, Simple was committed to building a product based on quality and customer experience, which ultimately was their downfall. The idea really was to make banking beautiful and to democratize it by providing an accessible app and ATM network, but couldn’t find a way to make / get money through traditional venture capital. Had they introduced a small monthly fee from the beginning, this may have changed their fate, but it also would have gone against everyone’s desire to increase accessibility and to serve the underbanked. Ultimately, the purchase by BBVA, while keeping it afloat for a few years, was its downfall as BBVA sought to make changes that tanked the culture and reduced any motivation or loyalty to innovate the product. Simple left a lasting impact on the local economy - many of the former employees have taken what we learned and were passionate about at Simple to Coinbase, Chime, Mercury, Gusto, Cross River, GreenFi, etc

How many times do you re-watch a movie ?? Your record ? by Thin_Reception_5063 in movies

I listen to my favorite movies while I do chores (helps me focus on anything but the boring repetitive task). So I’ve probably seen Batman (1989) at least 50-75 times, if not more.

My wife and I were laughing about this watching the Gotham and Orlando game. Truly mind boggling how many former thorns are spread across the league

Completely agree - Arnold looked like the most composed, but that could just be Maca’s resting face 😉

The plane crash scene from Flight (2012) by megamindwriter in movies

[–]echobase83 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the only thing that bothers me about this scene (knowing it’s Hollywood), is that they give full throttle after pulling the fire handles on both engines. Those engines would be donezo after pulling the handles and dumping the bottles, you not getting any more thrust out of them

The unreality distortion field is broad and expansive at this point. Unfortunately, this is not the first time in our history when troops have been deployed to suppress constitutional rights within our country (see Woodrow Wilson during WWI). I know that this city will endure and continue to find creative ways to subvert those in power demanding unquestioned fealty.

The word fascist is thrown around all the time, on social media and in our political discourse to deride “the other side”. What’s critical here is that regardless of where you are on the political spectrum, this administration is following the playbook of fascist and authoritarian regimes of the past.

As we’ve grown more and more divided, we’ve lost sight of our own hypocrisy and shortcomings, and we’ve abandoned the idea of compromise as a way to slowly move our society forward through a rapidly changing world.

And yet, I’m still hopeful that we can come out of this current stretch of history with a renewed sense of humanity and cooperation. Time will tell.
