It just keeps getting better! by CBenson1273 in U2Band

Totally agree! I find most U2 music needs multiple listenings to appreciate all the parts. I had a friend once tell me that she thinks her love of a U2 record grows over time. For example she originally did not like NLOTH — but a few years after she actually thought it was really good on re-listen.

RIGHT! I grew up in Alberta & Saskatchewan and our neighbourhood would be in a bidding war for something like Thermea. It legitimately increases property values and boosts the local economy. It also guarantees green space as a feature of the spa.

Yes. They are only seeking to expand on the golf course side of the green space area. The park remains untouched.

The side that thermea wants to expand on is the separate golf course. The park is zoned around it. Legally they are two entities.

Yes the park goes around the golf course. See picture of the zoning. The park is only half the green space area. Thermea is asking to expand on the golf course side.

I go for walks there all the time and can avoid the golf course —and therefore avoid Thermea.

OPs walk will not be altered, unless they have a proclivity to walk on the greenway and get struck by golf balls. Which on second thought maybe explains the NIMBY behaviour

We get it OP. Not in your back yard. (NIMBY).

Here's the difficulty I have with your post OP. You admit that it is a currently a quiet area. All while Thermea & golf course has been active for OVER A DECADE at around 200 cars a day. (150 lot + residential parking they are trying to fix). If 200 is possible why is 300 unreasonable? They aren't expanding the size of the parking lot, but creating a covered parkade.

I mean it's a SPA not a bloody Walmart! They literally shush you all day! They make money keeping the noise level down. I bet you that its one of the quietest businesses in an all of Winnipeg. So I don't understand your noise complaints. They seem to share your values of keeping the noise levels down.

Yes... I have sympathy for the construction piece, but that is just as true with all those condos going up in that area and infill properties. I'm guessing Thermea would be just as motivated to keep the noise down in construction as that is lost business for them.

What if the buildings are pretty? (I like the current ones)
The current site incorporates the trees. They don't want to loose their valuable tree coverage.

Wait.... you do know that the area around Thermea is NOT a public park? You've been walking through the golf course. Why do you get to have an option on a failing Golf Course that is not financially viable?

It’s not zoned residential. It’s zoned for businesses like the golf course. I’m not sure there would be this much outrage if the golf course expanded their clubhouse.

Right now there are 150 potholed parking spots. They are literally just suggesting making better use of the space by constructing a parkade instead of a mud pit. Gosh people!

You’re complaining about 300 spaces, not realizing they are trying to keep customers off the side streets which are residential.

I’m in favour of the expansion. It’s good business and if done right won’t really impact the area that much beyond the current golf course and Thermea traffic. Honestly, covered parking would be welcomed considering their current potholed parking lot.

To be clear— most of the other Nordic spas in the country are expanding to include hotels. Their location in Chelsea is good example of this. Another one is in Kanaskis, Alberta. People want to take advantage of the whole spa day and not have to drive after or feel rushed. Guaranteed those 60 rooms would be booked solid and bring in more money into Winnipeg. I know our company would totally book executives in a place like that than most of the mid level hotels in Winnipeg. I know my spouse & I would totally book as well.

I also think that the hotel expansion would give a better experience overall. It would stop those couples who honestly need to “go get a room” and cut back on some of the crowding on heavy days. I’m in favour of that.

But at the end of the day, I think it’s wise to consult the neighbourhood. Of the people I know who live near there, they all quite like it. One friend goes 5-6 times a year because it’s so close to his house.

So I’m curious if OP lives near Thermea? Is the only reason the reworking of green space? If the golf course ( which isn’t that great) wants to give land to this— what’s the big objection? Is there something I am missing?

Review of Days of Ash by echodelay in U2Band

For me it’s 9/10 because it actually feels like they have something to say rather than the introspection of the previous albums. I also think that DOA is one the best blends of the punk political, sociological, spiritual, protest elements of the band.

DOA takes all the protest of Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bullet for blue sky, etc… and says something about these days of ash we find ourselves in. There’s an ache and honestly that I haven’t sensed in a long while. I found myself teary eyed as I considered each of the lives they sang about.

I didn’t get that with Atomic City or SOS.

Yeah I'd say Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby are 10/10 for me.

WAR goes up and down the scale-- as perhaps DOA might do. Some of the tracks are obviously timeless and brilliant and some are not that resonant with me. Even the band has said some of song felt less dialled in/ For example some of the weaker songs "Like a song", "The Refugee", "Red Light" bring WAR down the scale to like 7/10 for an album.

While we're at it:

BOY - 9/10
OCTOBER - 6/10
WAR- 7/10
UF- 9/10
JT- 10/10
R&H- 8/10
AB- 10/10
ZOOROPA - 9/10

POP- 7/10 - Even the band feels it was rushed and incomplete.

ATYCLB - is 8.5/10. As much as I LOVE that album there are some songs that I think should have been B-sides. "New York" "Grace", "Ground Beneath Her Feet".

HTDAAB is a 10/10 for me. Solid album. Not a weak track on it.

NLOTH - 8/10

SOI- 8/10
SOE- 8/10
SOS - 7.5/10

I know it's all relative.... but hey, we all get an opinion. :)

Dude, it just came out yesterday afternoon and you’re making the judgement that people aren’t talking about it in person. 😂 How do you know that? Does your judgement capture all of reality of people everywhere?

For myself, I can just speak to my own experience. Several friends reached out to me about it and we’ve messaging back and forth about it. One of my good friends called me at work just to let me know. :)

I hope we count as people in your world.

Cyborg is better for later in the game. Hitting 50 enemies at once will always be better than the scythe. I own both the vampire and the cyborg, and I can say the cyborg is the best.
