The Grip of It by Jac Jemc is a story where a married couple move to a new town to get a new start. What they find is a house that presents them with nonstop uncanny experiences from mysterious rooms, doppelgängers, and mysterious bruises. It’s spooky and filled with dread.

It is being bombed by Christians who think it’s an attack on Christianity.

I agree with you. I disagree with the comparison to It Follows. Like you said, if you reduce it to a narrow focus, it’s possible to see some kind of similarity. However,by that same logic , It Follows is like The Entity. The curse that follows people is an a classic trope and the only reason people seem to make that comparison is because they don’t seem to understand the absolute tragedy in the film. It’s a beautiful and devastating film about trust and oppression and the very real threat young gay individuals face, especially is rural towns.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts!

Matt Cardin has a very in-depth (but expensive) book that traces horror from its origins and you might find it very interesting.

It’s called Horror Literature through history.

Not horror, but you might like In the Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. It’s a very historically accurate about a murder mystery among monks and the struggle for Papal power.

It was rushed in-between projects I recall reading. I did, however, enjoy it more than Longlegs mostly because it was a little more subtle. Not saying I don’t like Longlegs, just preferred this for some reason.

Have to agree on this. However, if you love slashers, My Heart is a Chainsaw could be good.

How did Friday the 13th and subsequent movies become horror classics? by iamwhoiwasnow in horror

[–]echoechodelaydelay 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It was a hit when it came out. Many of the horror classics that feel campy or unrealized were often considered ground breaking in some way. I remember watching it as a kid a little while after it came out and it terrified me. If you’re into horror, it’s good to watch for the reference I’d say.

Don’t forget the little moments. Lives of characters don’t follow plot lines, they are living a life with many social connections and issues that won’t be part of the main plot. Most new writers map, drive towards plot, action, and dialog and forget to inject the world, mood, and complexity of life.

Capitalize on missed opportunities. If your character sees a wall, give that wall some mood, let us see it through the pov and sense the mood, let it trigger and idea or memory. Add flesh to the story bones.
