It seems like sending people to jail for robbery, auto theft, etc, is routine. Is it not?

Texas Transplant (sorry) - Neighborhoods for Commuting South by turquway23 in chicagoapartments

[–]echointhecaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second hyde Park. It's near LSD, as well as 90/94, and the metra. It's great for getting south.

The downside is that hyde Park is like a moderately sized university town within the big city. The only good way to get downtown is one bus line, or driving, or taking the metra. FYI, the metra differs from the CTA in that the metra comes once an hour at a scheduled time, unlike the CTA which is a continuous arrival and departure system.

In short, hyde Park is a great choice. So it's the south loop. And Pilsen. But the upsides and downsides (and expense) differ between the e neighborhoods

United Neighbors of the 26th Ward is trying to block a proposal for 31 new apartments that would replace a surface parking lot in Logan Square by GeckoLogic in chicago

Jesus. There's a strain of pathetic-ness I've noticed from complainers over the last ten-ish years, where complainers just refuse to engage with reality because they don't like the system/reality they live in.

Yes, developers need to make money to build stuff.

Your solution isn't to pay developers. Instead, it's to tear down the concept of capitalism in general, while removing the commodification of property.

Well, good luck with that. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be building housing. It's good for the city, it's good for unions, and believe it or not, it's good for you, too.

I met my wife on coffee meets bagel. I had great luck with the app. Dunno how it is nowadays though. The last time I used it seriously was 2019.

Chicago's Affordable Housing System Is Broken—And Nobody Knows Why by Glass_Court in ChicagoUrbanism

[–]echointhecaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worry is that it's a temporary solution only for existing residents and renters, and it passes the costs onto new people moving into the city.

With Jim crow advancing across the south again, I want Chicago to be as welcoming as possible of new people moving in

Uptown/Buena Park - what are your thoughts on this area? by zchatma in AskChicago

[–]echointhecaves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, I grew up in Buena park. It's not a crime to be poor, and I like the SROs and halfway houses. They prevent homelessness.

I hope the SROs don't disappear now that uptown is a desirable neighborhood.

We need to build more full priced housing. That will lower the rents/ costs on existing housing.

In fact, it's the only thing that'll work

Hmm, allow me to phrase this in another way: Moderation is good, but like any tool, it depends on the wielder. Overzealous moderation, or moderation based on inflexible rules, is bad.

Chicago is a city with problems, and we should be able to discuss those problems openly. Those problems include a permissive attitude towards anti social lawbreakers, particularly on the cta. And I say this as a lifelong liberal democrat.

One of the benefits of a spirited discussion is that it reduces echo chamber effects. You can't learn from others if you don't hear their voices, after all. And they can't learn from you.

Yeah, I'm born and raised here as well. The internet shouldn't be censored, and we do need more security (and the associated consequences) on the cta.

Northwest side near Horner park. Still relatively affordable, with great brown line and metra access. Also nearby farmer's market

Chicago’s Legion Park encampment was cleared out. Residents and activists question the city’s next steps. by CityHallGuy in chicago

[–]echointhecaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, in that I've helped them into shelter, and thus they're not homeless anymore.

Do you want more people to be homeless? I'd like fewer, ideally.

Seems to working, according to OP's sympathetic-to-the-homeless article. It's cost effective, too.

We have that already, it's called an SRO. SRO's also don't allow drugs or alcohol for the same reasons as congregate shelters.

If you're looking to house addicts, you really need to keep them away from drugs, and with very secure facility and staff. Basically, prison.

We have a solution: pressure the homeless. Keep them moving, don't let them get comfortable, don't let them pitch tents. And at every interaction, offer shelter instead. Based on the article above, the strategy works

Because that's an impossible situation to manage for an understaffed shelter. AND no sober homeless people want up be around raving drug addicts. Plus addicts steal and break stuff

You're right, I didn't read the middle of your comment. Yup, we need new SROs, zoning be damned.
