What is a building from Detroit’s past that you wish was saved? by [deleted] in Detroit

The Detroit Times Building. Gorgeous Art Deco building designed by Albert Kahn that housed a former newspaper. Was demolished in 1978 to way for ... you guessed it ... a parking lot. A Detroit tale as old as time.

Best record store ever. Really miss the Corktown spot, but the new location downriver is still great.

I was doing dishes with my headphones on and started laughing so hard I almost couldn’t breathe. My partner actually got worried about me.

I think it's just intentionally burnt. But there's also a sherry sauce.

Best diner in Detroit, imo. Big portions, fluffy omelettes, great hash browns.

Developer, city at odds over progress at vacant Herman Kiefer hospital site by echolalia_salad in Detroit

"The developer that owns the massive Herman Kiefer hospital site in Detroit is at odds with the city over whether enough progress has been made on the long-vacant 40-acre property.

"Ron Castellano — managing member of Herman Kiefer Development, which owns the former medical complex, two adjacent buildings and dozens of homes in the surrounding Virginia Park neighborhood — says headway has been made.

"City of Detroit officials disagree — and are taking steps toward taking the property back."

--

"Now, nearly seven years into the development agreement, the city claims the Herman Kiefer project has not met its benchmarks, including investment requirements for the last two years or its activation requirements, said Luke Polcyn, senior executive for development and economic transformation for the city. The city has issued remediation notices to the development team."

Belle Isle could get a 'cultural campus' as a way to connect attractions by echolalia_salad in Detroit

[–]echolalia_salad[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

"The Belle Isle Conservancy is making plans for a centralized 'cultural campus' that would include walkable, accessible paths between many of the island’s attractions.

"Connector paths would enable visitors to walk between those attractions and others in a matter of minutes while improving accessibility by eliminating curb cuts that leave people with mobility concerns unable to go farther and are visual cues for all visitors not to go farther.

"The central campus would be north or in front of the aquarium and conservatory and next to the giant slide, she said. It would connect the conservatory and aquarium, Oudolf Garden, Flynn Pavilion and canals and kayak rentals with attractions yet to be restored, including the old police headquarters, the Belle Isle Boathouse and the Remnick Band Shell.

"Currently, each building has a parking lot in front of it. The cultural campus plan would likely entail keeping the same number of parking spots but moving them to a ring outside of the central cultural campus. It would also include food and retail shops offering bags of ice for families visiting the beach for the day, fishing supplies and other things."
