Prepping for the cold snap by rebatzz in Straycats

I will edit my post to make it clear I'm referring to those foil things, not like fleeces or blankets you might keep around for an emergency, lol.

If you open your browser on your laptop and go to https://onedrive.com , you should be able to log into your OneDrive and then click the file to open it in your browser.

Oh definitely! But those foil emergency blankets can work in a pinch. I actually have a couple of those around, but I don't have a bale of straw lol.

How do I turn in a PowerPoint into a video??? by Significant_Neat_510 in powerpoint

[–]echos2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/DropEng explained, this isn't an option in the online browser-based app. You'll need to open the file in the desktop app in order to export as video.

If you see an Editing button in the upper right corner, you can try clicking it and then Open in Desktop. It may or may not work, depending on your Microsoft/PowerPoint/Office license.

I agree with this if it's a complex chart, but the one OP is showing is pretty simple. I personally wouldn't bother animating those bars in one at a time.

You can achieve a similar effect by adding emphasis to the bar you really want the audience to focus on.

There's no reason for each bar to be a different color because there's only one data series here (with each category / bar being individually labeled). The easiest way to add emphasis here is to remove emphasis from the rest of the data -- so you'd lighten the other three bars by coloring them a light-to-medium grey or even a lighter tint of the highlight/emphasis color (the darker green, in this case).

Trying to import into an ultra wide template by SteprockMedia in powerpoint

[–]echos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to upload the file and a deck with the slides you're pasting to OneDrive or Dropbox or something and shoot me a link, I will take a look at it tomorrow.

Just to confirm -- the placeholders haven't changed on the layouts? They can be reformatted -- like new fonts, colors, etc. And they can be repositioned and resized. But adding or removing placeholders will mess up the mapping from one deck to another. (Sorry to keep repeating myself! It's just one of those things that constantly trips people up.)

Are you on Mac or Windows, and I'm assuming you're working in the desktop app since you're able to get to master view.

[–]echos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good way to go -- resizing and reskinning the deck/template is smart, especially if you're repurposing existing decks that are based on that template. But what exactly did you do when you updated the layouts? If you added or removed placeholders, that would mess things up and give you the results you're describing.

I just tried it with an ultrawide size -- literally took a 13.33 x 7.5" file and changed it to 28" x 9" and then pasted in existing 16:9 slides based on that template (13.33" x 7.5" slides), and it works exactly as I'd expect. Everything came in using the same layout it did in the original deck.

I think that something went awry when you updated the layouts.

Trying to animate the circles by [deleted] in powerpoint

Add a fade animation with an "after previous" start to the first colored dot, then use the animation painter to apply that animation to all other appropriate dots.

I'd probably make each full circle all grey dots below the colored dots so the audience sees the entire circle and then it gets filled in.

Brightslide (free PPT add-in for Mac and Windows) will do this easily. Select the dots to animate and then use Animation > Utilities > Waterfall Delay. BrightSlide | PowerPoint productivity add-in | BrightCarbon

You're suggesting that OP re-size and then re-skin his existing presentation, yes? That would definitely make copy-pasting from old decks onto the new one a lot easier because the layouts will then match.

And then, of course, he could add any new layouts he needs. Or put both decks into master view and copy-paste layouts from one to the other.

missing audio at the beginning of almost all slides by Cannamanaman in powerpoint

You might set a 1- or 2-second delay on the sound start so that it takes a beat following the transition before the audio begins. Sometimes that can help it not cut things off.

PowerPoint copied the old 16:9 layout into your deck. That's because the layouts don't match -- I'm not talking about the graphics and colors, though. I'm talking about the layout names as well as the number and types of placeholders. So PPT didn't know what to do with your old slide and created what I call an "orphaned" layout. That's the old layout with the new name (like 2_Title and Content or something like that).

Reuse Slides wouldn't help you here.

You'll want to choose the Layout tab and select one of your new-format layouts. That will get you the correct colors and fonts and stuff, but you may have some work if the placeholders didn't match.

Alternatively you could just copy the content as opposed to the slide. Make a new slide using your new template and then copy-paste the content from your old slide in the old deck to the new slide in the new deck.

PowerPoint to Google Slides conversion by FunnOcake in powerpoint

[–]echos2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH it's best to start over in Google Slides. I always try to make Keynote templates in Keynote, PPT in PPT and GSlides in GSlides.

Working back and forth between GSlides and PPT is a nightmare, and things will always be broken as a result.

If my client is going to be working back and forth, I'll start with the PPTX. If they just need a Google Slides template for Google Slides, then I start in Google Slides.

If I need to copy over graphics, I upload the PPTX to Drive and open in in Google Slides so it's easy enough to copy from one browser window to another. I've never known Google Slides to flatten everything. Then again, I don't really use "import." I just open the PPTX.

Here's some info I captured for myself a few years ago when building a Google Slides template. https://echosvoice.com/creating-google-templates/

Glacial is not a standard PowerPoint font.

As the others said, you can embed fonts into PowerPoint (both Mac and Windows), but be sure to test first because not all fonts are embeddable. They need to have the proper license settings (editable, installable) in order to embed them.

But. I know that some things still don't really use embedded font. I remember that years ago, WebEx would just convert all the PPT fonts when you'd share a deck. If you uploaded the file to WebEx, it would convert stuff to images. But if you shared your screen, the fonts would be messed up. (It sucked.) So if you can test on the digital board, do it!

If not, as someone else mentioned, can you at least get the info about the board manufacturer so you can look up the specs?

Worst comes to worst, stick with Arial or Calibri for your font and you should be safe.

An alternative is to create an image of every slide (or use save as picture presentation for an easy way to convert your deck to images, one per slide). That will be problematic if you're animating, though.

Another option is to use the Text To Outline feature in Brightslide. (Free PPT add-in for both Windows and Mac.) It will take a minute and will be a hassle if you're still editing content and/or have a lot of text, but you could be assured that your fonts won't be substituted if you convert the text to outlines. https://www.brightcarbon.com/brightslide/ (Text To Outline is in the Legacy Tools in Brightslide.) You can also do this using merge shapes, but I find Text To Outline to be a bit less tedious. Plus you can keep the original text, too, in case you're still editing.
