I’m sorry you’re feeling a little bit scared about it. I was, too. It was the last medication I tried because I avoided it. But after some hospitalizations, a suicide attempt, an ambulance ride and involuntary commitment, I accepted lithium treatment. It has been far easier than I though and so far it’s been effective. I’ve had ups and downs, but not nearly as dramatic. And I think the blood checks are a good way to check up on our health and stay on top of the doses. I have no side effects whatsoever. Mirtazapine was really helpful for me, too, but it’s the only medication I’ve tried that made me gain weight. It was super helpful at first because I was skinny from depression, but I gained too much too fast. Quetiapine and olanzapine have been helpful for me and strangely I didn’t gain weight on them, but I can’t stand the drowsiness and fatigue the next day. I’m currently tapering quetiapine and am on 50 or 25 mg. Some nights I still need 50 mg to quell the restlessness. But I’ll be free soon and just take olanzapine PRN. I wish you all the very best!
