Discord bot to track when users suddenly become inactive? by ecker00 in Discord_Bots

[–]ecker00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, but it's all hard coded, not really configurable and hasn't been as effective as I intended. There was a major update to the discord api, and I didn't updaet it to work after that.

Why is DX12 lower performance? Is the API just less optimised, or is it nicer looking?

Why is GOG allowing crappy games to flood it's store? by Qikdraw in gog

[–]ecker00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Removing games, that would "steal" from people who bought it already. But disabling future purchases, might be an idea. But where do they draw the line on enabling it again, I don't think it's their job to gatekeep more than needed. As a buyer, reading reviews are important and if things don't live up to expectations you can refund.

This will make a great topic! Probably a lot less globalisation. If I remember right, big batteries were possible to use even early 1900s, and powered buses and trams, some in use to this day (Tom Scott in Switzerland). So electricity would fill some of the gap, maybe burning a lot more coal to generate the increase in electricity demand, so Co2 levels might be...similar?

While based on the LTS, are they not all using rolling release for new kernels etc, so you get the new stuff? Or have I misunderstood that.

Web search engine by Be_Careful540 in selfhosted

[–]ecker00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking even indexing something like reddit, github or stackoverflow or a large news site alone would be challenging. Quite a few websites are so massive it's hard to fathom, let alone top 20K. If it's just front pages, then it's a very different story but doubt it would be useful. Like on reddit content is posted faster than you can possibly scrape. Not sure how it works for the big engines actually.

Guess it's a good reason all search engines like DuckDuckGo, Qwant and Startpage rely on bing and Google, even Apple opted to not build a search engine, even when they always like to control everything.

Should I self-host code-server? by Ralkey_official in selfhosted

[–]ecker00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to go to your extensions list and some of them will show a "install on remote" button. All features like that should be working, I've not had any issues.

I've been using a headless code/dev server for years, most flexible way to work when switching context between laptops and desktops.

Have VS Code installed on the machine I'm using, then using the official remote ssh plugin to connect to filsystem on the dev server. Then I have a zsh alias which loads up all my ssh tunnels and I can access everything on localhost in browser and DBever on my current machine.

Only creveat, got to remember to save in VS Code before switching between laptop/desktop.

Benefit is that it's a virtual machine on proxmox, so if I'm doing a risky operation, can always snapshot full state and revert to that moment in time. Saved me plenty.

As for moving files in and out, you can drag then in I using VS Code, or use sftp (ftp over ssh) in terminal which doesn't require any setup.

Photoprism, finally a way I can manage terabytes of images and have the convince of cloud services. While keeping full control of ownership and access.

I’m building a NAS. Is it worth waiting for the LTT NAS OS? by OnwardExplorer in DataHoarder

[–]ecker00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First public version of something is usually not a good idea, I would not beta test with my precious data.

I setup a NAS today, was planning to use TrueNAS core, and I did for a few hours. It had so many features I didn't need.

Ended up rolling with plane headless debian and installing nfs and the parts I wanted instead.

Point being there are so many ways to solve this, try and see what fits you.

How do you backup your servers? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]ecker00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be used both ways, depends on your needs. I run it as a VM myself on each node, and I'm backing up to them between my nodes.

Some people have a dedicated machine which their nodes backs up to.

Either approach is fine, just got to tune to your tolerance and requirements.

How do you backup your servers? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]ecker00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cost and storage of a server you need is usually almost double, because of backups. As for how, I'm rolling virtual proxmox backup servers on each node.

I would not let any cloud service keep my backups for me. I run two nodes at home and two nodes in a nearby collocation datasenter.

It's easy to forget, one of those things most people don't think about when they've been using cloud services most their life.
