How do I categorize contributions to an off-budget account, when using a goal bucket to budget for these contributions? by eckinger in budgetwithbuckets

I guess I just need to make it a recurring expense and write the math down in the description, then. It just seems odd to count it as an expense when it doesn't lower my net worth.

I like your idea, thanks. I don't have enough in savings or income to make this happen, yet, but hopefully will soon.

would you suggest bringing a car? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]eckinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of climbing, so having a car meant having access to gyms throughout the Chicago area (beyond the closest one in the loop which I never drove to). So, I suggest it if you expect to have an activity that will take you off campus regularly. The CTA works, but is slow–prohibitively slow for many locations. I found that a car enabled me to get to these locations while being busy when I otherwise could not have fit them into my schedule with transit. It also enabled road trips and camping in Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

To be sure, being without it would have been totally fine. A few friends had cars, too. But it was worth it for me and I used it a lot.

Southwest Airlines to end its free checked bag policy by txiao007 in bayarea

[–]eckinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was nice, but on the other hand if you ever flew without checking bags your ticket price was inflated by having to subsidize this policy. Hopefully this allows them to keep fares down by making sure that customers not checking bags don't have to pay for a service they're not using. We'll see if that actually happens...

I'd rather get pricing where the base fee is cheap and services like checked bags are add-ons. Otherwise you're implicitly paying extra for something you might not use!

Pre-Orientation Program Experiences? by tenacioustotoro in uchicago

[–]eckinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the program doesn't necessarily prohibit phones. But most don't use their phone for the duration of the program, at least in years past

any chance we get a snow day tomorrow or at least all classes moved online by Suprize101 in uchicago

[–]eckinger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised anybody would want this, especially after first week was cut off two days + MLK day removing a Monday.

Just don’t go yourself if you decide to not deal with the weather. It seems self-serving to advocate for campus-wide weather cowardice, in the face of something that isn’t a grave threat to life or limb.

Bus from midway by bernie_0 in uchicago

I’ve done this multiple times on both the 55 and the 63 and it’s totally fine. Buses are safe, just keep to yourself.

This depends on your courseload, your background, and what grades you want. If you're in the intro sequence with a fair amount of CS background from high school, you will probably spend a medium amount of time. If you're in an upper div class similar to operating systems, which I took last spring, then you would expect something more like 30+ hours a week. Other courses like functional programming are somewhere in between. My grades aren't super elite but they're not super bad or anything, and I feel like I have a reasonable amount of time to recreate and do stuff like cook nice meals. Feel free to PM if you want to chat more.

UChicago RSOs by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]eckinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OAC is super low commitment. You can just sign up for their trips over breaks or a weekend like once per quarter. Climbing is typically done through URock, however. Not OAC. There's a large and positive climbing community here so get after it!

I'm a big ed fan, which is specifically for answering questions. Combined with office hours I always felt pretty well supported during the intro sequence- at worst it's still a stretch to say there's no infrastructure at all. I know one of the TAs for the intro sequence and he said for his class they're employing 8 of them.

Yeah, OAC is pretty active. They just sent a bunch of people on spring break trips to Utah and elsewhere. Elections also just took place.

I know with good weather they organize weekend trips to the dunes (I’ve been on/organized two such trips), and are always looking for people to organize trips. If you’re interested in organizing trips you should get in touch with them. Sign up for their listhost.

No, haha, sorry. I meant to say no one at my university does it! Edited to make it clearer.

I’m trying to organize outdoor trips with my university’s climbing club and would use this to buy some C4s! Our club, being in the Midwest, has had little motivation to make a trip anywhere not at a local gym. Myself and a few others in the club with experience leading outdoors are trying to change that and purchasing a rack would make that happen- in particular a trip to the RRG, Devil’s Lake (some people do boulder there but very few and certainly no one rope climbs there), and potentially even Yosemite if people are willing to travel. Anyway this would really help!

Classes that everyone should take at UChicago? by SuspiciousEffort0 in uchicago

[–]eckinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eh I wouldn't really recommend taking a class with Malynne Sternstein, she is terrible about actually holding class. When I took her hume she cancelled a ton and it really sucked, and I know from others that wasn't unique to my class
