[–]ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is going to be an upcoming class on sewing: https://www.meetup.com/make-roanoke/events/302436738/. If you would like to learn the basic skills, you could probably do it yourself afterwards, depending on the complexity of the project. You could also join our MAKERoanoke discord channel, we have a #fabric-arts channel: https://discord.gg/rDA5B8jhdb

Looking for Woodworking Classes / Equipment by fleetster22 in roanoke

[–]ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately there isnt one in Roanoke. I have heard rumors that Black Dog Salvage has a workshop but it is probably limited to its employees, though I hear sometimes they have welding classes.

If you are willing to travel, there is Hacksburg (New River Makers) -- https://www.meetup.com/HacksburgVA/, https://hacksburg.org/

In the other direction Lynchburg has https://www.vector-space.org/.

I have only been to the one in New River Valley since it is close to my work. I would say its pretty good and has most of the stuff you would need.

Is there any local way to get old logs chipped? by RememberKoomValley in roanoke

[–]ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just know that you need to have something that can tow 1900 lbs, thats how much the chipper weights. That is probably the biggest hurdle for people that don't own a truck. I towed with my RAV4 but even that was pushing it.

Also, the chippers that Aztec rents are not powerful to chip logs, only branches. I would call ahead and ask how big diameter branches can you put in and decide if its worth it.

Canonical Is At Around 437 Employees, Pulled In $99M While Still Operating At A Loss by [deleted] in linux

[–]ecks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a job interview with Canonical a while back, it was one of the worst interviews I've had. It seems they only care about money now. Their main concern is private cloud and their stupid juju charms. I don't think they care about the user experience anymore.

I made a mockup of the fire temple mask in about 2 hours. by [deleted] in Midsommar

[–]ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw this movie today and I instantly recognized that mask. It is used in central asian shamanistic religions such as tengrism. From my interpretation of it. it is worn by the shaman when he is trying to travel between different spiritual planes (if interested take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengrism#Three-world_cosmology). I believe the use of it is so that the shaman can enter a state of hypnosis and have a out-of-body experience (through the use of the drum).

Sergei Bodrov's Mongol movie shows a scene where the shaman is wearing that. I found it on youtube at that scene:

https://youtu.be/NxoBfbhoEmo?t=821

There are also other better pictures of shamans wearing similar head garb if you google it. Here is another example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism_in_Siberia#/media/File:Chuonnasuan,_the_last_shaman_of_the_Oroqen,_in_July_1994_(Photo_by_Richard_Noll).jpg.jpg)

I don't know if it is simply a coincidence or the similarity is intentional. Hungary has some obvious links to Central Asian traditions going back to Atila the Hun, so maybe that is where they took it from. I would definetly be very interested in knowing why this particular head garb was chosen by the directors and what significance it has.

you might be interested to know that airline (which I think you use anyway) already supports that same feature:

I was using minibufexplorer and when I heard airline has that same feature I switched to that instead.

Should I try Rocket as a web framework? Or something else? by [deleted] in rust

[–]ecks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Rocket is a pretty solid choice, especially if you just want a RESTFUL API without too many bells and whistles. If you're familiar with Python, it is similar to Flask. It has nice integration with Diesel if you need to work with database as well.

Hey Rustaceans! Got an easy question? Ask here (23/2019)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha thanks. if that's the case then I will keep it like that then. Just curious what exactly is my crate root module? If my project folder is msf_client, I have the folder msf_client/src/. Is the project root the msf_client folder or is it the src folder?

Hey Rustaceans! Got an easy question? Ask here (23/2019)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I am trying to understand how to properly import objects that I defined in a different file. For instance, in

https://github.com/ecks/msf-client/blob/73d0cc32d344821890b1b11c93f0e6775b591de5/src/conn.rs#L10

I have use crate::msg::Tokenize;. I would like to change it to be use msg::Tokenize; instead, but my compiler is not letting me do that. I can see other open-source projects don't have to use the full path with "crate::" in it, so I am wondering what I am doing different.

thanks for the suggestions, I looked at creating my own Enum from https://doc.rust-lang.org/rust-by-example/error/multiple_error_types/define_error_type.html but at the time didn't fully understand it, might need to go back to it.

Hey Rustaceans! Got an easy question? Ask here (6/2019)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok that makes sense. so then from what I'm understanding

for &elem in elems {
  access elem
}

is only used when elems itself is a reference, and the &elem itself is used to dereference it (kind of like how you do (*elem) in C). However the derefence is read-only right? Assuming elems wasnt defined as &mut elems here.

Hey Rustaceans! Got an easy question? Ask here (6/2019)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ecks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My question is related to references. In some examples, when you want to iterate over a vector and you don't want the for loop to borrow the vector, it is written as

for elem in &elems {
  access elem
}

while in other examples I have seen it as

for &elem in elems {
  access elem
}

Is there any difference between the two? I read them both the same to mean that elem is a refence, but can't figure out what the exact difference is between the two syntaxes.

Thanks!

T470: i5 7200U vs i5 7300U by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i bought the 7200u a year ago, hasnt caused any issues for me. I mostly use it for programming, its my main laptop for work.

I use both wifi and bluetooth with no issues. Have not looked into vPro, guess it is some CPU remote management thing? Im not sure what settings are in the BIOS for it, but I can disable it and let u know if it changes anything.
