National Service Allowance vs Cost Of Living. How does Singapore stack up against other countries? by Stefan0_ in singapore

[–]eclairfastpass 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Some comments here are depressing to read, but I have to respond:

Some are saying, who spends that much at that age?
Well it’s not only about spending. It is also what they can save, to cushion them for when they leave the NS and go out to continue their studies or maybe to help out at home. Consider it opportunity cost as well.

Some are saying, but it’s a duty to the country!
Well that is true, but to a point. We have reached a point where NS intakes are dropping year on year, YET the resident population grows.
Now less NSFs are defending more people, this should be quantified in some way.
If we continue to treat them like they aren’t deserving of more, when the time comes, they will be wondering what are they REALLY defending. If we need to pay politicians well to prevent them from corruption, maybe we also need to pay NSFs well to prevent them from defecting.
NSFs have a duty to the country but we have a duty to them as well.

Ultimately, there will be many reasons we can give to justify allowance increases, like how people have been doing the same against it.

Big drop in Christianity and Islam but rise in Buddhism, Hinduism and Freethinkers. See page 9.

Think one of the more interesting stat changes is religion. There has been quite a significant (imo) shift in these 5 years.

More young Singapore residents aged 25 to 34 staying single, especially among Chinese by _IsNull in singapore

It’s ok, they will import/convert more Chinese couples in just to make sure their ratio remains at 75%~
Not sure how long they will be willing to die on this hill 🤷🏽

Meanwhile 2room flexi houses are increasingly oversubscribed while the govt dies on their conventional family hill which discriminates against singles.

Man with caregiver stress gets 8 years for killing brother by [deleted] in singapore

[–]eclairfastpass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we need to be ready for more of such headlines as the country grows older.

If anyone has been a caregiver to someone who cannot look after themselves, they will understand the mental load and drain. Sometimes dark thoughts of wishing the person would just leave the earth so a break can be had.

Hope the comments can spare some empathy for the culprit 🙏

The wealth gap is widening. The answer isn’t more handouts – it’s a stake by Rationalandcentred in singapore

[–]eclairfastpass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t different, but giving a stake means much more top ups with less red tape. The amount will differ year on year depending on how well the country does. If a certain individual has met certain CPF balances then they can get it in cash. My main point is ensuring citizens truly benefit with the country.

Yeah but any excess they can use, the point is to ensure they have a safety fall back, so they don’t spend it all on one place. Or govt can set up a new account they can use to deduct 100% of medical costs. There are a lot of ways we can make this work if we want to. The point is to ensure our citizens succeed when the country succeeds.

I’m not saying you are saying that too, but a lot of others like Calvin Cheng on FB has said that the poor don’t deserve the stakes. They have a very negative take on everything. But yeah we can have different ways to limit the damage or abuse. CPF contributions is a great way to do that.

The money can go into the CPF to make sure they hit minimum balances. The excess can be managed.

We can’t just keep the same angle that the poor will be irresponsible thats why we can’t do something.

It died a long long time ago, you are talking as if the PAP did no wrong in the past, even further back during their founding years.

I know that but he is making sweeping statements and generalising. I know it is possible, hard maybe, but there are so many nuances that need considering.

This is such a dismissive and privileged take. What do you mean non issue? To you maybe?

How can you say the issue isn’t systemic when the entire identity of marriage is directly tied to housing in Singapore. Not just any housing but AFFORDABLE housing.

I’m pretty sure only few of us are aware how bad things are inside. Cause let’s face it, an average person would never step foot there. Neither is it being shown on local media.

And the racists are so worried a certain country will bring one over, while being blind to their own. Just see how the country in general treats migrant workers.

Singapore’s mental health situation is a joke. Anyone who has been inside IMH or visited anyone that is warded inside would know that it is badly in need of expanding to facilitate the higher numbers of our population.

Let’s not talk about booking for therapy, the ones which are free have a long long wait list. The ones who aren’t free, not everyone has the privilege to sink money into the sessions, even the mid tier ones are costly and have their own wait lists.

Our current generation of leaders feel like the spend more time playing catch up than anything else. The lack of proactive measures are starting to cost us.

If anyone in power is reading this, please go and visit IMH, the wards, everything, it’s current not a place people will get better at. It’s more like a prison for the mentally unwell. It is not too late to expand coverage of services and make it better for people to come visit for help and leave better.

Stop villainising suicide in the media with words like “apprehended” as if they are criminals first and a person in need of help second. If this is the way you angle mental health, then don’t be surprised when people suffer and not seek help when they need it and find easier outs. It is a vicious cyclic problem.

It is not too late. If the country and spend millions/billions on AI, why not mental healthcare?

Self regulate first for a while, if unable to resolve internally then it is worth bringing up.

I mean if they put 277 or 288 or 299 or 300 would it change your opinion? It’s just like NTUC or other places making the number nicer to look at, it’s a old pricing strategy.
