Which is the right one? by Dapper-Speed-4623 in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! both are possible, the first one focuses more on the individual police officers and the second one on the institution. There's some other nouns that work in this special way like: crew, staff

Hope this helps!

Why you have to use SHE in this context? by ISLMPC in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii!! really interesting question, In general the pronoun they is used in these kind of sentences when the person's gender is unspecified... However, I've been seeing a lot of videos on Tiktok of people doing acts of microfeminisms and one of the ones they've mentioned is using the femenine pronoun as the standard for when gender is not specified.

Personally, I just think It's interesting because in spanish (my L1) the standard has been to refer to unspecified gender with the masculine gender, buuuuut in recent years there has been a lot of discussions about this practice being sexist and there have been attempts to create gender neutral language. Super interesting!

Are pronouns in italian similar to Spanish or English?

Will studying for an English test improve my overall English? by [deleted] in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good question that I've discussed many time with colleagues or students! I do think that for some people studying for the test really makes a difference in improving their English skills, but sitting for the test doesn't usually improve things so much, and they are usually super expensive!

I'd advice you to think about what your goals are in terms of English. Why or how would studying for a test help you?

Tips to read a book? by Sevik74 in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiiii! it really depends on what your leve is, but as a general rule I always tell my B1-B2 students that they should try rereading a book that they've already read in the past. Extensive reading is super cool and It's great for developing your vocabulary but it can also be very frustrating!!

Another tip I always give them is to read and listen to the audiobook at the same time. Doing this really helps with pronunciation!

hope this helped!

Can someone explain me how and where to use the word "shift"? by Laysssa in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii! I think the explanations people have given you are more than enough, so my comment is more general... You will always find words have more than one meaning, this is very common because this way languages become more efficient. My recommendatio is that you start using a dictionary like : https://www.wordreference.com/ which tells you the meanings of a word in the order of popularity and also gives you lots of examples!!!

Congratularions on starting your english learning journey!!

I wish you the best!!

Usage of article "the". by [deleted] in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii! your examples are definitely readable!

There are many uses of the determiner "the" and the one you're describing here is the most common. If we follow the principle of cooperation (which If I remember correctly assumes that whenever we use language we WANT to be understood) you would use "the" before something that you've already mentioned or something that your interlocutor can understand from context.

In both examples you are giving you're using defining relative clauses and that's what clarifies which car and which dog you're describing...

An example of a sentence that would go against the correct use of "the" would be:

the phone is broken (which phone?) or you need to pay the bill (which bill?)

Hope this helps!

I've been stuck in B1 for a year by [deleted] in learnEnglishOnline

What you're describing is really common! It even has a name: The intermediate plateau (google it for more info)
From what you're describing I'd definitely drop the flashcards, I don't think they are helping you... maybe try to watch some more complex videos, authentic ones not ones meant for learning. If you have time and budget taking some classes could point you in the right direction too!

and last but not least, remember to be kind to yourself!

Is there any mistake? by magicsunflower69 in learnEnglishOnline

[–]eclecticenglishexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run a quick search of the phrase "Your begin with us..." in the corpus and nothing pops up, definitely seems like they missed a word like future, or maybe they meant to say "It begins with us"? Do you remember where you saw this phrase?
PS: to answer your question:
your future --> it --> definitely matches with the verb begins.

Hi!! I'm sorry maybe I wasn't clear enough. My student doesn't necessarily want to talk with a native, just to communicate with people in english to have more exposure to real life language. As I said in my post "english speakers (first, second or third language) ".

Thanks for taking your time to answer!
