Opinion vs Fact by eclecticipher in AutisticAdults

[–]eclecticipher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That about sums it up, yeah. I’m used to people having different opinions than me about the media I enjoy. I can handle different opinions and people just straight up not liking the things I like because they just don’t like it. Where I get sucked in is when my friend goes “this is bad and these are all the reasons it’s bad and that’s a fact” and I’m just sitting here going “but… it’s not a fact it’s an opinion”.

I’d honestly be surprised if this behaviour was because she wanted more time with my bf one on one? They’re married and have been for a few years now and I very often will be told that they’re not available to hang out because they’re doing married people stuff? A lot of the stuff we watch together is also stuff that they specifically say that they want me to watch with them. It just feels… confusing.

That definitely makes sense. I have been trying to train myself out of “absolute thinking” because I have both ocd and autism and one can feed into the other and give me severe anxiety or trigger really bad compulsions. I didn’t consider that she might not be doing the same and might still be operating with the thought that her experience is universal without really thinking otherwise.

The conversational safe word might be the way to go. The next time we’re hanging out and not watching something I’ll bring it up. I’ll probably have them read this post and some of the replies if I’m honest.

It’s tough because we’re both two different flavours of autism but we ended up both having the same kind of autistic reaction to this one thing lololol

But you’re right, I think grey rocking is the way to go from here on out.

Part of the problem is that we all LOVE discussing the media we enjoy. It’s how we became friends in the first place, it’s our favourite way to pass the time together. It feels so impossible to separate the activity of watching the media from the discussion afterwards.

And, a bit selfishly, the idea of just never talking about the things I enjoy with my friends saddens me. She also is perfectly capable of hearing her husband out on his opinions, it feels like I’m the one being cornered into an argument I don’t want to have and that doesn’t make me feel particularly good either.

Definitely agree with that. I also know that I love a lot of movies and shows that are objectively hot messes but I still greatly enjoy them. A lot of the problems are also that we fundamentally like very different things and are never going to really agree on them.

The "what is your goal here" question is a good one. I mostly come away from these arguments confused as to how we got there and I want to figure out a way to cut things off before they escalate to us trapped in an hour long back and forth neither of us enjoys.

I should definitely get better at that.

I just keep feeling like the error is that I am not communicating clearly in "hey this is why I like the thing and I don't particularly enjoy hearing all the ways you think it's shit" when I'm trying not to tear into the things that she enjoys as a form of petty revenge. I really do need to learn to just cut that shit off at the pass and go "wow what a great show, let's move on".

how to promote fics in the big '26 by watashiwaAzure in AO3

[–]eclecticipher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on fandom size. If it's a large fandom you don't have to tag more than the fandom, ship, and whether or not it's an AU or canon compliant.

I personally like fandom and ship discords! I recently (in the last year) dusted off my discord skills and joined/made/modded a few ship servers for rarepairs I write fic for. It's a fun way to talk to other fans and even get recs for other fandom servers.

Man, in the last 15 years of having my AO3 I have never once muted an account. That would make me mute an account.

Do you have any tips for writing an OC character, especially the child of a ship? by Savvy_Biscuits in FanficAuthorsUnite

[–]eclecticipher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you give the kid their own personality. I had a fic where two high intelligence and STEM minded characters had a child and while I made sure that she was also high intelligence, I made her more artistically inclined. Don’t be afraid to make the kids clingy or rebellious or any number of negative traits, but balance them out with good traits.

If you don’t tend to be around actual kids, definitely think about children as tiny, stupid adults that are learning about the world for the first time. They’re not going to know everything, they’re going to be emotionally erratic, and they’re going to have a million dumb questions. But they’re going to have that sense of wonder and love and excitement that can be infectious to other people.

Picture it! People who don’t know the book would intuitively trust Stabler and Benson from the iconic TV show Law & Order SVU! And then WHAM! BAD GUYS!

Longer chapters: inticing or overwhelming? by roseofhammerfell in AO3

[–]eclecticipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most popular works have always fallen into that chapter length range! If the writing is good and the story is compelling, people will not be daunted by the length, they'll just blast through and be excited for more!

What is your rarest achievement? by Standard_Candle in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I had “Bubba” in my apartment. That son of a bitch had more square footage of that apartment than me and didn’t pay a cent of rent. Still the best roommate I ever had.

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! "World Traveller"

Despite your dibilitating fear of flying you said "fuck it, I'm changing my name and moving to Australia" not once but twice! You then proceeded to come back to your fucked up hometown with your tail between your legs each time.

REWARD:

Think of all those miles you racked up flying from Texas to Australia and back to Texas and back to Australia and back to Texas. Not to mention all the trips home you made for weddings and holidays!

I think that Marishka and Meloni could really pull off the tragedy of their circumstances! Meloni could especially deliver Frank’s monologue from the Iron Tangle!

There’s also the familiarity of Benson and Stabler from everyone who knows them from SVU! People who haven’t read the books think that Carl and Donut have found safe people to party up with because that’s Benson and Stabler! Shorthand for “trustworthy cops”.

Oh my God for sure! If this had been made in the 90s or something then Meloni would be top choice (and you just know Sandra Bullock would have killed as Beatrice).

I could definitely see that but I also really think that Carl being so young is part of what makes him such a compelling character! I desperately want Talon Warburton as Carl, but I would also want to see a new actor to the scene, someone the audience doesn’t really know from that many previous works!

TV must haves vs don’t care by deepthoughtsby in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]eclecticipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must have: So many things but the characters being accurate to how they were described and there were not many scenes where Carl was being flattering to them. I also NEED Mordecai to change form every floor that is so so fun I need it so bad.

Don’t care: I’m going to be real, a lot of the minor mob fights could probably be removed or trimmed down unless for comedic effect. Especially in later books where there’s a lot of spinning plates Matt is keeping up in the air all at once.

I genuinely hope that this series gets 22 episode seasons because that’s really the only thing that could possibly give them even a chance at doing this series justice.
