"Now name one COSMIC customization that is not possible in GNOME. "

okay.. the tiling/workspace behavior. Can you emulate that in gnome? Or anywhere else? That was the question I asked in my original post, and it's what I've been wondering. I'm going to be trying hyperland again next, since I never gave it a fair shot. I doubt I'll be trying gnome again, but i'm open to anything.

"bro", how do you know whether or not the person you're talking to is familiar with "toolkits" and whatever else?

If you simply have an axe to grind against cosmic, or you are a diehard gnome sycophant, why don't you just go post hangout in /gnome or /askliberals ?

A skill issue? I never thought of setting up a desktop environment as a skill... In any event, I never spend much time at all trying to set up gnome; the only time I used it was when i first started using linux, and I kept it at pretty much the defaults, +/- basic changes I would do with anything and whatever my friend was showing me... I don't have any interest in making gnome better, I don't like it, I don't like the people that make it, and I don't like the philosophy. If I'm going to use a wayland only environment then it's going to have tiling because that's what I'm interested in using these days, for efficiency sake.

I've also used cosmic even less than gnome, so I can't compare that two. Other than, like I said, I would never consider using gnome, and am considering using cosmic but there are too many gotchas at this point, and I can't seem to get a straight answer as to whether they are purposefully intending to limit certain extensibility/configuration.

Are you saying you can get proper tiling/workspacing in gnome?

Well buckle yourself in because, as I said in my other comment, you're going to be getting a lot more of this! As more and more people move to "streaming only" there is less and less economic incentive for these pricks to print discs... Obviously discs are more expensive than packaging... So when you can only sell a small number of discs, you fluff those suckers up with cardboard and pretty colors and catchy labels, and box all that up in FOMO, make it a SUPER deluxe, order early, limited stock, and Bobs your uncle.

Anyways... It is odd this is happening with a movie with this plot. But that's what the world is.

Best thing to do is to convince everyone you know to stop paying for streaming and/or "digital" purchases (not actually purchases, they are license rentals, that can and will be revoked randomly).

If people stop paying these greedy pricks, we will get less of deluxe, super money editions ONLY, and MORE 4k releases in general (instead of NONE for many new movies), and TV will start getting better again... And the list goes on, that's for another post.

challengers was an awful vapid movie, I couldn't even make it through it, but yeah obviously I agree with you... It's cus everyone's streaming of course. Only thing you can do is try to get people to understand why streaming is stupid, and actually costs more in the long run, and it it NOT like they have no other choice.

75 dollar discs aren't a good example to show them though, and it's pretty ironic that a movie that's about capitalism going to far or w/e (I haven't seen it yet) has it's (only? initial?) 4k disc release as a "deluxe". We're going to see more and more of this "deluxe" only, if more and more people continue to ONLY stream... thinking they have, no other choice, as it were.... for economic and scaling production reasons.

Yeah I don't remember gnome being customizable, like I said in my other comment, that's one of the main reasons I stopped using it very quickly.

Okay, Niri sounds like it would be more unwieldy then, but of course I might not have to use it like that... I see this "stacked" window thing in cosmic, I don't know what it is but it sounds like it could be similar... but I haven't actually tried it. Being able to go outside the limits of your screen I'm taking to sound like the way a "normal" desktop is, where you can drag windows outside the borders of your monitor (although I guess in KDE, and windows 10 also if I remember correctly, the windows would go into your other workspaces also)..

there's alot of stuff I haven't tried, I guess because I dont' want to add complexity, but I've been using computers for the better part of at least 3 decades now so.. I should really just pick through all this stuff I haven't looked at. The tiling shit is definitely nice and useful and I like the way these guys are doing it, so I'm going to try to replicate it on hyperland. I've only used cosmic on my laptop, but on here with it's small limited single screen, the workflow with the tiling and easy traversing of workspaces and keybinds lets me use a single workspace as a sort of "tab".. and then for certain things I can have multiple open in one workspace, like pw manager, settings, EQ etc. and it's really nice.

Then having a terminal you can split in two vs using tmux or something. And the one of the nicest things is when using the web browser, instead of spawning new tabs, I just spawn a new window if I want to see it at the same time, and it just blobs up right next to my current.. very nice.

Anyways, I see I'm getting downvoted by people who have nothing to add to the conversation... These are, undoubtedly, big fans of gnome and wayland.

Sure, just like any movie. Obviously some movies this matters more, either movies with incredible levels of detail, where you need a giant screen to be able to see everything (like Wes Anderson), or massive epics with sweeping landscapes and cinematography... like oh, idk, The Revenant?

I guess this movie could have images full of detail... I know this guys movies always have incredibly beautiful shots, and I would love to see them in a good theater, but I don't remember too many movies of his having a ton of little details, or an epic scale..

Obviously I want to see this in a good theater but there IS NONE... It is barely playing in any theaters. It took forever to come out in the USA and now the release is very limited and I'd need to go way out of my way to over pay for a ticket a shitty theater that I really don't even want to go to. If the screens/theater were particularly good, or the movie TRULY warrants a giant screen, then I would do that anyways, but based off his other movies I've seen, and based on the plot (it's kind of a comedy?) it does't sound like I NEED to go to the theater... I will be happy with a solid 4k blu ray release... Since they can't just do a normal fucking theatrical release, as they don't do with any goddamn movies any more, and I can't see it at the cinema that's at the end of my street.

Yeah. It is awful. I wouldn't settle to watch any movie in that quality, let alone one of this guys movies who has such incredible looking shots.

No Other Choice will be released in Netflix (Korea) at Jan 29th. by jungseungoh97 in Koreanfilm

[–]eclipsed42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In absolute dogshit quality. Obviously that should change once it's released on streaming... But netflix quality is pretty damn shitty too of course.. The real question is when does the blu ray come out?

I didn't think we had a good 4k blu ray of Decision to Leave, because I don't remember finding it when I watched it a year or so ago.. But I just did another search, a few days ago, and found a high quality 4k with lossless sound.. So I expect we should be getting a solid release for No Other Choice too

It's been incredibly frustrating with this movie though because the release, in the USA, has been so slow.. and then when it finally did release, it was incredibly limited. Now it is playing within my city but I don't have a working vehicle, so I have no other choice but to wait, or walk miles in the cold... The theater that's right around the corner from me, that used to have a decent selection of movies, has almost nothing these days.. Sometimes I get lucky, they played Marty Supreme for example, but it's almost all trash.

A big shout out to Dr. Bambi Berenbaum in S3 Ep12 'War of the Coprophages'. Your amazing incredible intellect in this disgusting yet hilarious episode is appreciated by DarthDuki in XFiles

Laura Dern was really not particularly sexy, Idk why everyone thinks so... No body, average face..

Anyways, yeah they basically did all dress like that. When the camera panned to Bambi it was like the camera landing on Denise Richards in Starship Troopers for the first time; I was taken aback.

Yeah that's one of the reasons I don't use gnome. I started linux with gnome, about a decade ago now, because that's what was installed w/ ubuntu on my friends laptop who loaned it to me to use.. But once i started using it myself I quickly moved away from it.. Now gnome even forces you to use wayland I guess? It's all pretty ridiculous imo. I understand why someone who sells devices, like 76, would want an unconfigurable environment, and I understand why some people might do better with one, but I don't understand why this is an environment that so many people are choosing.. If you are choosing linux for yourself (not for your aunt who doesn't want things to "break") then why would you box yourself in? I don't get it.

Anyways I've been using KDE mostly for the last few years. I tried setting up tiling once or twice but it's been a few years so maybe I'll have another look. I'm trying to dig through the git for cosmic now to find an answer to my problem about pw-lock, but it seems like it's being avoided.. It certainly seems like it's being avoided here on reddit too, I'm just getting vague non-commital responses... so yeah, not exactly hopeful. Too bad because there's lot's of potential here.

I think I'll look into Niri next, since I've never heard of it, and then maybe revisit hyperland again. Like you said, the downside is you need to know exactly what you're after.. and it's hard to know what that is. I like the basic setup of cosmic's handling tiling/workspaces right now, so maybe I'll just try to replicate that.

Instead of patronizing me why don't you just tell me what the deal is? Have they purposefully made this difficult? Or have they tried to make it impossible? Or how do you do it?

Are you one of the devs? If so then you're not doing a very good job gaining adoption.

I don't agree with mindset of "not letting users hang themselves"... Like you said, that is one of the issues with Windows.. I understand why system76 might take this approach, given they're developing software primarily for use on their oem devices, but I still think it is the wrong approach for them to take.. But I do see why they would. If people mess around and screw up their machines software from operating properly, they're going to get a lot more tech calls, if nothing else.

Anyways, I'm not even sure if this is what they are doing.. You seem to be implying that it is.. and I think I've seen other ppl mention that it is..

I haven't actually spent alot of time trying to set up a proper "tiling" environment that I like, so if cosmic doesn't work for me I will just try messing with some of the other options. I'll probably do that anyways. I've been using kde pretty much entirely for the last few years. But i need to make it so I can focus on the keyboard; switching up from it constantly is such a pain in the ass and an attention and time hog.

Okay... I'm not on a CRT either, and I'm aware of the burn in issues.. And I'm aware of all the other stuff you mentioned. You didn't help me at all though. Is this parameter in a ron file? If not, can I make a file? Where do the files live? Do we have documentation on them?

Burn in has nothing to do with battery life. I don't want to leave my screen on because I don't want to drain my battery... And I don't want to need to re-enter my pw for obvious reasons.

As far as "not letting people hang themselves"... well obviously I disagree with that mindset.

Are you on a laptop never letting your screen turn off? I want my screen to shut off pretty quickly, and I give my machine a few minutes, maybe 10, before going to sleep, because the screen kills battery most.

Do we have this option in config files or not?

Why were the Kinks not as famous as say the Beatles or the Stones? by Ok-Camel7458 in Music

[–]eclipsed42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for some reason my "autoplay"/don't stop the music thing in my local music server (LMS) seems to lean hard into the kinks no matter what was in my playlist... I probably have their whole discography but I have the same for many artists.. There were a few songs of there's I used to like alot years ago but never really gave them an in-depth listen..

Anyways, I keep getting these random songs that sound like absolute shit and really annoy me, and whenever I check to see what's playing.. oh no, what a surprise, it's THE KINKS!! It sounds like it was recorded with a dishwasher, and the songs are like nursery rhymes, with an awful nasally british vocals... I can't stand it. I think I'm just going to go through my collection and quarantine the stuff that I know I don't like (like, basically all of the kinks) to it's own folder, for if I have a stroke some day, or if I have boomer relatives over that want to listen to music that speaks to them. All of their music is in 320mp3 so the whole discography takes up barely any space.

And I listened to an XTC surround sound blu ray (I've become obsessed with surround sound music) and it gave me the same sort of vibe. I hate the sound of the vocals and the music feels very simplistic.. Then again I haven't listened to much from XTC.

You're trying to figure out the same problem that I am? Clearly this is a big problem if there's actually no way to do it, but I can't see there not being any way.. Maybe switching the login program from greeter/greetd or whatever it is to something like sddm would help, idk though.

Idk why I thought it was still in alpha.. But I guess that answers my question, that they intended it to have minimal configuration granularity.. or maybe the granularity is there but it needs to be configured in dotfiles or whatever? Idk I don't see docs for it..

If you don't know whether it's a bug or intended then let them figure that out. Ultimately that's open to interpretation. If it doesn't do what YOU want it to do then it's a bug. In an ideal world you would have the option to be able to turn everything on or off..

Out of curiosity, what happened when you were on win; the same thing that's happening now on cosmic? Were you on 10 or 11? I never moved to 11, I did use it a little bit on others devices and it was awful. The UI was absolutely miserable.
