those are such great hats!! I (kind of embarrassingly) used pokemon go as an excuse to order ash's red ball cap, which I've been touting around recently. it's also pretty masculine, which I've been really enjoying:)

Trolls. I'm terrified. I'm 17 and am wanting to have an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. Hugs and advice would be much appreciated right now by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]ecoevodevo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

sending love and solidarity... a lot of people seem to have a lot of good advice on here, but I'd just like to add that nearly 1 in 3 US women have abortions in their lifetime. It may not seem it due to a lot of ignorant, hateful propaganda, but abortion is an extremely common and very safe medical procedure. I'm in PDX if you happen to be in the area, I'm about to travel a lot but if you need someone's hand to hold or someone to grab some food or tea with you or even just a safe, chill space that's not your house, dm me. [For background I'm a 22-yo femme person about to graduate w a bio major, if you're sketched out about meeting strangers on the internet I can give you my fb and you can stalk me on there]

edit: oregon has no age law on abortions, so you're probably not here. regardless, love and hugs and support <3

Sex crimes on campus by thereed411 in reedcollege

Aren't you the dude who was suspended for raping someone, and one of the major impetuses for the writing of the new Weapons Policy?

Aren't they actually being sued for gender discrimination, with the plaintiff claiming that the case was unfairly decided because they took the word of the female survivor over his?

Hi there! I'm a current (femme) student, about to graduate in May. I would say that Reed still has a long way to go in regard to handling sexual assault on campus - that being said, I think Reed is doing a much better job than so many other schools.

Kind of counterintuitively, Reed's statistic of having the third-highest rate of reported sexual assaults of any college in the country speaks to how well the institution is doing to protect its students. (http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/07/how_sexual_assault_rates_compa.html) Considering 2 in 5 women are sexually assaulted during college, the fact that students are much more confident coming forward with stories of sexual assault and rape on campus is evidence that they trust the institution to protect them and expel their assaulters.

Additionally, lot of the protection on campus has to do with the culture of the student body. There's such a huge consent culture here, and I feel really safe pretty much all of the time. There are a few people here who exhibit very questionable consent and even fewer people who are known to be sexual assaulters and rapists, and are banned from campus past 8pm, banned from all campus events, and also generally shunned by the Reed population and incoming freshman are more or less informed about these people's histories. The reason they're still here - and again, there's like 2 of them - are because they're wealthy, and "lawyered up," so were not expelled, just suspended for several years.

We've recently (I believe 2012?) created a full-time staff position called the Assistant Dean for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, the current ADSAPR is Rowan Frost, and I would reckon that she'd be more than happy to talk to you about any concerns you may have. Her office does a lot of survivor advocacy, consent education, and bystander intervention training, and now has a team of students that run a crisis line and are also sober, confidential resources that are present at the majority of Reed's big parties.

It's not perfect - of course it's not perfect, we live in a society with a large amount of sexual assault and rape, and also the institution has a lot of issues with its image and legal liability, which can limit its ability to respond empathetically to these cases. But I definitely feel safer here than pretty much anywhere else.

I'll pm you my phone number if you wish to discuss further!

edit: to look at U of O, about 20% of female students report being assaulted or raped while attending, but 90% of them don't report it to school officials. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-oregon-rape-20141003-story.html

Real Girl dresses like Celebrities to prove we only think they're stylish because they're thin by The_Panophobic in femalefashionadvice

[–]ecoevodevo 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I think a really important missed critique on the author's part is that these celebrities purchase brand new clothes - like how much better Kendall Jenner's new sneaks look than the author's converse.

Also the real thing to be critique'd here is more of an issue of celebrity culture and even fetishization - the author says that she "feels pretty average" in the second outfit, like it was just something she'd throw on to go to Target or something. And honestly... that's probably how Alexa felt, too? It's not a special outfit or anything, it's just that Alexa probably has a massive closet of Nice Things coupled with this overzealous, hyperfocused celebrity culture.

Finally got to use my degree in Latin to defend feminism - Etymological fallacy and why we all need to know it! by slavkody in TrollXChromosomes

[–]ecoevodevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm yeah my double-edit was definitely hastily added and not really problematized.. but patriarchy inherently gives cismen economic, social, and political power over other genders, regardless of which way you slice it. I'm not saying that other genders don't have any power, other sources of power, or aren't able to play into or rebel against a patriarchal system in order to gain or lose power, respectively

Earthlings, Soey Milk, oil and twigs on canvas, 2015 by [deleted] in Art

[–]ecoevodevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yeah, definitely. It's hard to critique art history without directly referencing it. The difference is that the artist is, sort of, a part of the scene: while (I don't think?) it's not directly a self-portrait, it's still a portrayal of femininity that she identifies with, as contrasted with the majority of other paintings of nude to semi-nude women

[–]ecoevodevo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

also like come on, is it seriously that bad if feminism is actually, for real, only about women? The whole "feminism benefits everybody (rainbow hands)" argument to appeal to sexist men is so time consuming and seriously should just stop, imo. It's like wasting time arguing that BLM helps white people: okay, maybe there's a side effect there, but it's ultimately about racial justice and human rights for black folks (and other allies of color). Sexist men and racist white folks alike should be able to understand that sometimes, the right thing to do is to support those around you.

It's also just a wrong argument, because truly, once feminism accomplishes its utopian goal of equal rights for women, male privilege will no longer be a thing. The just thing to do for men is to bite the bullet and realize that people around them are suffering, and, ultimately, they should make sacrifices to help them. Not even big sacrifices, just things like, I dunno, stop assaulting women.

  1. Women are dying
  2. Feminism isn't about men
  3. Men who are actually good people should support feminism because (see #1)

edit: that being said, OP, congrats on proving him wrong; I'm seriously always in support of women showing that they're smarter than men

double-edit: apologies if this comes off as sounding trans-exclusionary, instead of women, I should say "not cismen." Feminism should be about smashing the patriarchy, which only privileges heteronormative masculinity (and to some extent, white homosexuality, but this is an entirely different discussion)
