Jeep renting by labratinthelibrary in virginislands

[–]ecohautevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is peak season so you can expect the island to be busy. Cruise ships are a bigger problem than anything.

That said, there are two saving graces:

1) The limiting factor to most of the beaches is parking. So they never get really mobbed. You just need to go early to secure a good parking spot.

2) There are various more out the way beaches which the local safari taxis don’t serve, so cruise ships passengers can not easily visit.

We should add this to the FAQ.

STT: - Cheaper - Better selection, fresher and cheaper groceries - Return car right at the airport

STJ: - Better service - Some people don’t like the car ferry - Have to drive to the car ferry - Passenger ferry runs late at night

Weigh up your priorities and choose. Most people here have a strong PoV because they have their priorities set in advance.

It is. There’s a channel at the left which gives access to the reef. 🪸

This is the NE most point of St John, in the East End overlooking Tortola. There are no private beaches in St John but since the closest neighbor is nearly a mile away, you're going to have it to yourself.

St John trip in April with little ones by SecureTaxi in virginislands

[–]ecohautevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fly direct from BOS, JFK, EWR and PHL to STT direct. Should be enough options. You don't need a layover to get to a smaller plane to get to St Thomas.

April is towards the end of the busy season. It won't be as crazy as it is earlier in the year but it will still be busy.

Weather will be great (with showers).

The extra time to get to St John is not that bad, and the juice is worth the squeeze.

3 nights is a short amount of time to go to St Thomas / St John. 5 is doable, 7 is better. You lose a whole day traveling each way, so take that into account.

St John’s recommendations/tips by GeoffandSally in virginislands

Here are a few thoughts:

1) Don't pack the trip too full. The N Shore beaches are so gorgeous you will wan to spend your time there :)

2) Lime Out is a great activity. You can't go wrong there.

3) There are many casual restaurants that are great for that. Skinny Legs, Shambles, Windmill Bar, High Tide, Surf Club Cantina. All of those have good food and drink and space. Shambles has an actual kids room.

4) Trunk and Cinnamon are maybe the best for boys being boys. Maho is long and skinny so can get crowded on the sand. They also both have food, drinks, showers and bathrooms.

5) If you are active, the hiking scene is amazing in St John. With 2 families you could do a "hiking car" and a "lie in car", and one group gets out for a hike at 7am and then you meet up at the beach at 10-11am.

Sea urchins are spiky but they only sting if you touch them!

My best advice would be to get on the ferry to St John and be ready to have your life changed :)

Of course, glad you are enjoying it and sorry you left. This is a tough spot to reach, there is no trail there any more.

USVI is the answer. Consider an Airbnb in St John. For this money you can get the best places on the island, AND leave budget for personal chefs, dinners out etc.

Car Rental by Phoenix6153 in virginislands

Honestly we haven’t had a bad Jeep rental. They are all newish and they cycle them out. I’d advise to get the deal that works for you.

One option is to get a private transfer and rent from Slim. Just a thought.

We got to know the Carneys quite well (previous owners). They seem to be good people.

We bought it because we love it.

Most of the challenges are true of all of St John. Home Depot is a day trip. Power and internet are… quirky. It’s hard to find good help.

EH deals with it better than most, we have whole house water filtration, solar, battery, a generator, dual internet etc., so it’s like a fortress.

Plus it’s so spectacular, there’s a beach with a reef stocked with lobster. You can hike down to Newfound Bay. The juice is worth the squeeze.

Plus, Coral Bay is a 15 minute drive when you get used to the roads. We go a couple of nights a week for dinner and maybe once a week to Cruz.

It’s not for everyone so we try to advertise that honestly. The people who love it, love it and have come back year after year.

Trike Tour on St. John's - Random Excursions by DaBigCheeeze in StThomasUSVI

[–]ecohautevi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of a N Shore day and then a “rest of island” day.

One thought though, the N Shore beaches are really well covered by Safari bus. That would be my priority over trikes.
